MSI MPG Gungnir 100 is the brand's second new chassis, which is ready to add its identity to a range in which we have practically everything. Chassis of considerable size, and considerably more robust than that of Vampiric and with a front that installs Mystic Light lighting and three 120mm fans, along with another rear ARGB. We will see during this review all the secrets that this chassis does not keep, so let's get started!

As always, we thank MSI for their trust in us, giving us the product for analysis.

MSI MPG Gungnir 100 technical characteristics

Unboxing and exterior design

As it is a higher performance product, we already have a cardboard box painted in the brand's colors, that is, red letters and a black background, revealing a large photograph of the MSI MPG Gungnir 100 completely disassembled in modules, along with its main characteristics.

These characteristics are for example the presence of Mystic Light tempered glass lighting, pre-installed fans, etc. We will see all this little by little, this is just to open your mouth.

In addition to the chassis, inside it we find a small box located in the hard drive bays in which all the necessary screws will come and a small user manual. In this case the screws are separated according to their use, so everything is faster and easier. Once again, we see that the quantity is rather just, but sufficient.

With an overview photo of the MSI MPG Gungnir 100 chassis we begin this external description. It is a chassis that as we see is quite spacious and voluminous, although still within the half-tower chassis. In fact, its measurements are 510 mm long, 227 mm wide and 525 mm high, registering a weight of 9.3 Kg, which is not too much if we consider its measurements.

In this model, the chassis is made of good thickness steel and it shows in weight and touch as we work with it. In addition, its front, side and top elements are completely removable for a better installation, something that is not usually seen in chassis of this cost.

In the lateral area we find the presence of a 4mm thick tempered glass panel that will be installed using four screws with manual thread. For its coupling , rubber protectors have been used to avoid vibrations and damage, in addition in this case the glass is quite darkened, so it is not easy to see the interior unless we have lights.

Both in the upper and lateral front areas we have very abundant ventilation grills to let air pass in both places. On the inside of these there is a medium grain dust filter installed that we can clean without problems by removing the casings.

The front area of the MSI MPG Gungnir 100 stands out for being completely smooth and with a configuration of edges and bezels, to give a quite original finish, although somewhat sober. Then it will improve with the presence of lighting. We will notice that this area is finished in hard plastic of a good thickness and will be completely removable manually.

Note that both in the upper area, where the MSI logo is, and in the lower area, we have RGB LED lighting with Mystic Light technology. And in fact, MSI gives us the possibility to 3D print different plastic logos for this front and thus have various lighting configurations on them.

In the right side area we only find a black steel sheet panel and the respective ventilation openings in the front and top area. In this case, the brand has not chosen to introduce a glass panel in this place. To remove the sheet we will only have to unscrew two screws that are in the back.

We go to the upper area where we find the I / O panel of the MSI MPG Gungnir 100 next to a completely smooth area and made of matte hard plastic with the respective air intakes that we have already seen. It has a sober and beveled design at different heights, and we can also remove it without problems to work on ventilation, which supports radiators up to 360 mm.

This I / O panel has the following connections and options:

  • On / off button Lighting control button with reset function Dual 3.5mm mini jack connector for audio and microphone 2x USB 3.1 Gen1 Hard Drive Activity Light

In this case MSI MPG Gungnir 100 does not have a USB Type-C in this front area. In addition, it is striking to find a lighting control button when the system is software controlled through a microcontroller installed in the chassis. It is certainly a faster way to get Mystic Light effects and a good way to improve accessibility for users.

We travel towards the rear where we have practically the same as in other chassis. There are 7 expansion slots that in this case are perforated and screwed plates together with a side panel that serves to fix the hardware that we install. The power supply will be installed in the lower area in an isolated compartment.

In this case we have a pre-installed 120mm fan with RGB lighting directly connector to the chassis controller. This zone also supports AIO and 140mm fan configurations.

We arrive at the lower area of the MSI MPG Gungnir 100, an area that has most of the space occupied by the legs, or rather, by the leg trims. In the rear area we have a removable fine grain filter to give air to the PSU, and in the front area we have the hole to remove the front panel.

We also see the screws that hold the legs and the hard drive bays located in the internal area, which in this case only support one mounting position. With such a large space, we see the rubber supports of the chassis a little small, larger ones could have been installed to provide more stability and less vibration.

Interior and assembly

We come to the section where we will take a closer look at all that the MSI MPG Gungnir 100 can offer us regarding mounting options and hardware configuration. The elements that we have used for the assembly are the following:

  • AMD Ryzen 2700X with Stock heatsink AMD Radeon Venga 32GB DDR4PSU Corsair AX860i

That is, a mid-high-end gaming assembly, although without the presence of hard drives. Nor do we believe it is necessary.

We have completely disassembled the chassis to see it naked and thus appreciate its construction and performance. We have a very large interior area with a fairly well-kept appearance, since we will notice the presence of the rubber protections of the cable routing holes on the entire periphery. We will also see a completely closed compartment for the power supply that accepts sources of up to 200 mm, although it may be higher if we remove the hard drive bay located in this same area.

You can also not miss the front opening to install radiators up to 420 mm, or the two SSD hard drives above the area of the PSU. We will ensure compatibility with Mini-ITX, Micro-ATX, ATX and E-ATX motherboards.

For its part, MSI MPG Gungnir 100 supports graphics cards up to 420 mm. We are left to see a large hole in the plate installation area for mounting heatsinks on-site, and in addition to a size of up to 170 mm.

RGB lighting

Note that the front panel will remain fixed on the chassis after the removal of the external housings. This will allow us to completely remove them without interfering with the hardware installation. In any case, the lighting housing can be removed by unscrewing just two screws. Recall that MSI offers files for 3D printing other custom logos for this lighting.

Also noteworthy is the presence of an MSI microcontroller that will be in charge of providing that synchronization that we seek among all the lighting elements provided in this MSI MPG Gungnir 100. It has capacity for 8 lighting elements, be they lighting strips, fans or AIO, needing only a 4-pin RGB connector.

We also appreciate an input for power, in the form of a SATA connector, an input for interaction via the I / O panel button, and an 8-pin header output for connecting to the compatible motherboard.

Finally keep in mind that the rear fan also has addressable LED lighting, and will be directly connected to this controller.

Storage space

MSI gives a complete twist to the storage capacity of this chassis compared to the Vampiric, analyzed days ago. We have in this case a total capacity to install 6 storage units of various natures.

To start, we have two bays in the main zone, which are located above the sheet metal of the PSU compartment. It was something that we also asked for in the other model to gain space behind, and that we do have in this one. In addition, they are open spaces, so we can install both 2.5-inch SSD and mechanical drives.

Then we will have two other identical bays in the wiring area located vertically. They also support 2.5 ”drives both SSD and mechanical. And we finish with the traditional metal cabinet that has space for two 3.5 / 2.5-inch beans with removable trays.

Space for refrigeration

We enter to analyze all the cooling options that we will have in MSI MPG Gungnir 100 that are not few. In addition, we must say that it comes very complete.

We start with the capacity of fans:

  • Front: 3x 120mm / 3x 140mm Top: 3x 120mm / 2x 140mm Rear: 1x 120mm / 1x 140mm

We have no less than three 120mm fans pre-installed in the front area, although without RGB lighting. And we also have the aforementioned 120mm RGB fan in the back area. We should know that we are not offered a hub to connect all the fans together, which means that we will have to connect them directly to the motherboard.

We move on to liquid cooling capacity:

  • Front: 120/140/240/280/360/420 mm Upper: 120/140/240/280/360 mm Rear: 120 mm

The capacity is almost complete in the all-in-one refrigeration range. The measurements of this chassis allow us all these possibilities available, and of course capacity for custom systems as there are no storage bays in the main area.

Space is not going to be a problem in the upper area, since we have a considerable space between the plate and the space. What if you have to take into account is that between the housing and the we can hardly install the fans, so they will remain inside the main cabin.

Likewise, in the front area we have a sufficient space to install the largest refrigerators on the market. We already said at the beginning that the disk bays only allowed one installation position, now it makes sense, since they do not hinder at any time to install the cooling.

The front gap is large enough between the outer casing and the chassis to install all three fans. There could be enough space even to mount the AIO in this area, or at least the radiator next to the fans in the indoor area. As there is no filter in the area, the hose passage is free,

Installation and assembly

Now let's take a closer look at relevant aspects regarding the hardware installation and the result that we will obtain in MSI MPG Gungnir 100.

In this case the capacity for cable management is quite good, although without being perfect. We have a space in the rear area of about 20 or 25 mm thick, enough to pass any cable that we want, although we will have to make use of the clips since the routing systems are not very extensive, although they are more than in many models of the same price.

We will not have problems to pass cables to the board, since we have space below, above and on the side, and also well protected and concealed.

We say this because in this case we have a vertical element that allows us to route cables inside, with a sufficient capacity to pass the cables of the chassis, ATX connector with PCIe for the card and possibly some other SATA. Perhaps a larger size would have been much better to work more comfortably, because the chassis also allows it.

Let's take an important look at this system and the side SSD bays. The routing of cables of these units is going to be very hindered by the plate of the router, we will not be able to pass the cables inside, and surely they will not be long enough to pass them above or below. What does it mean? Well, we will have to remove the sheet and make use of the velcro available, leaving all the cables visible.

Final score

You can not deny that the result is worth it, we have a fairly darkened glass that provides a very personal and elegant view of the interior when we have lighting. Perhaps a led strip in the main area would have been fabulous to improve the final appearance.

The front area may be a little bland for personal taste, since the entire area is smooth except for the two lighting elements that are fantastic. In any case, the assembly has been very clean and we have been able to work inside without any problems.

Final words and conclusion about MSI Gungnir 100

We can say that in general this MSI MPG Gungnir 100 is a very interesting chassis from the point of view of professional assemblies. We have a large size, bordering on the full tower configuration and outstanding capacity for high-end hardware. The personal stamp is set by MSI with the presence of three lighting elements with Mystic Light technology and also a microcontroller with capacity for 8 addressable elements, which is greatly appreciated in a chassis of this cost.

The size allows us to carry out extreme cooling configurations with AIOs of up to 420 mm in the front and 360 in the upper area. The dust filters could not be missing in all the areas that we can perfectly dismantle to work on it. We have 4 fans of 120 included, something that not all the chassis can offer us from the factory, although beware, because we will have to connect them to the motherboard, since we do not have a multiplier hub for them.

We also recommend our guide on the best chassis on the market

The cable routing system is at a good level, although fasteners are still missing from the back plate or a larger routing gap as there is room for it. In addition, we will have problems pulling the SATA cables from the rear SSD drives due to the area that has been chosen to install them.

Taking advantage of the above, we must say that these two bays would be in a more strategic situation just behind the motherboard. In total we can install 6 storage units which is more than enough for advanced assemblies. The PSU compartment has been used to place two beans, something extremely positive.

MSI MPG Gungnir 100 is a chassis that we will have available for a price of 90 euros, which, judging by what it offers us, is not bad. Great hardware capacity, quality of materials, varied lighting and the personal seal of MSI. Chassis very competitive without a doubt, although with a slightly used and bland front, to personal taste, of course.
