Along with other variants of the MAG and Creator family, the Taiwanese manufacturer has presented at CES 2020 its new MSI Optix MAG342CQR ultra-wide monitor. Its peculiarity is that the curvature descends to a radius of only 1000 mm or 1000R much more closed and adjusted to that of human vision than there was until now.

MSI Optix MAG342CQR 1000R, UWQHD resolution and 144 Hz

Well indeed this monitor could be considered as a possible update of the Optix MPG341CQR, which of course we have analyzed in PR. A lot of things have changed in it, both inside and out, although it is still an ultra slim frame monitor and offering us a resolution of 3440x1440p and a 34-inch diagonal with an aspect ratio of 21: 9.

But in this case we leave behind the purely gaming design and find a base and support practically the same as the Prestige PS341QR, something that improves aesthetics and eliminates RGB lighting at least from the front of the equipment. But the biggest innovations in terms of design we have in its curvature, since it is now 1000R, that is, a curve with a radius of 1000mm or 1 m, making it much more closed than the typical 1800R and 1500R that are usually used.

Doing this with an OLED panel would be relatively simple because they are electroluminescent, but doing it with an LCD technology, surely of the VA type, is much more difficult to adapt the backlight to the transistor panel and achieve competitive imaging performance. But MSI has it well tied, giving us a refresh rate of 144 Hz at a speed of 4 ms GTG that will undoubtedly be more than enough for the most powerful graphics cards on the market.

Its color configuration is also very good, since the panel offers us a 10-bit depth (8 bit + FRC) and a color coverage of 125% sRGB. With this we could get very good records in DCI-P3 and Adobe RGB, although such data is not yet specified. In this case it seems that we do not have support for HDR, but we will be waiting for more data about this equipment from CES 2020.

There are also no prices or date of sale to the public, but it will surely arrive in the middle of the year or sooner, as usually happens with these releases. How do you think you would feel playing in this “so curved” panel?
