The MSI VR One is a powerful backpack-shaped computer that will allow us to play with our virtual reality glasses in a very loose way thanks to the great performance of its hardware. Surely you have seen it in some events and the experience is incredible. Don't miss our review!
Once again we thank MSI for the trust placed in the transfer of the product for its analysis:
MSI VR One: features
Unboxing and analysis
The MSI VR One comes inside a large cardboard box in which we find the usual color scheme of the MSI Gaming series, a black background and various details in red.
In the rear area we have all the main technical characteristics of the product.
Once we open the box we find the MSI VR One equipment perfectly protected by dense pieces of foam that are responsible for ensuring it and preventing it from moving before reaching the hands of the end user. We have in our hands a very peculiar and premium product, MSI shows us that it is one of the largest with impeccable packaging and we cannot fault it.
On both sides of the equipment we find all the accessories and documentation, all in two well-packed cardboard boxes.
MSI has also included in the bundle a cable to connect the VR One to our virtual reality glasses, it includes HDMI, USB 3.0 and power connectors to have everything in one cable.
A team as powerful as this consumes a lot of energy, MSI provides us with two lithium ion batteries with an amperage of 6365 mAh each, these batteries work with a voltage of 14.4V and are capable of providing 91.66 Wh. These batteries are connected to the MSI VR One for recharging, the manufacturer encloses a 230W transformer that we will connect to the equipment to recharge its batteries and always have them ready for our most demanding games.
We have already mentioned above that this MSI VR One is a very powerful device, to fully meet the demands of virtual reality we have chosen to include the best components from Intel and Nvidia inside. We find an advanced Intel Core i7-6820HK processor that is made up of four cores and eight processing threads at base and turbo frequencies of 2.7 GHz and 3.7 GHz respectively, this chip is accompanied by the powerful Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 graphics with the efficient Pascal graphic architecture.
MSI has sought excellent energy efficiency, something more important than ever in equipment like this that is intended to run on its batteries and away from plugs. 16 GB of DDR4 2400 memory in dual chanel configuration complete the main features.
Regarding storage, we find an M.2 NVMe SSD with a capacity of 512 GB, the equipment has a second free slot so we can have two of these fast next-generation hard drives installed. We continue with excellent wireless connectivity with WiFi Killer 1535 802.11-ac and Bluetooth 4.1 to be able to use a large number of peripherals.
We continue with the Windows 10 operating system and numerous connection ports in the form of 4 x USB 3.0, 1 x USB 3.1 Type-C / Thunderbolt, 2 x 3.5 mm Jack (headphones and microphone), HDMI 2.0 and Mini-DisplayPort 1.2.
The MSI VR One is built with dimensions of 409 x 292 x 54 mm (height, width, thickness) and a weight of 3.6 Kg, we are not facing a particularly light system so it will have to be taken into account when loading with him for long sessions. To this we have to add the heat that will be generated during its operation and that in summer can be something to take into account.
The upper part presents the usual aesthetic with the dragon in red.
At the bottom we have the space to insert the two batteries. At the top the power connector to charge the batteries. This port also allows us to power the virtual reality glasses with the attached cable.
And at the bottom we have all the connection ports that we have already mentioned before.
Obviously the heat generated can be a great enemy in a team like this, we see how MSI has thought about it and has placed an air chamber between the team and our back to prevent all the heat generated by the hardware from burning us, it will be necessary to see if it is enough, especially for those users who enjoy very hot summers.
If we remove this part we can access the RAM modules and the slots for SSD hard drives.
We continue disassembling the equipment and we are seeing more hidden secrets, to remove the back cover we will have to remove a total of 15 screws, with a little patience it is sucked.
We see two details that call our attention, on the one hand we see that the GeForce GTX 1070 used has an MXM format so we can replace it although it will not be easy to find one and its price will be very high. On the other hand we see its advanced Cooler Boost Titan cooling system in which we can see seven copper heatpipes that make contact with the CPU and GPU to absorb the heat generated by these chips. The heatpipes are joined together with two turbine fans to expel the heat out of the equipment. It is time to put the batteries and straps to the MSI VR One and we can start testing it.
Test of performance
MSI Dragon Center allows us to personalize, monitor, take control from your smartphone with various applications. The first contact with her has been quite good and we have seen a good evolution with respect to previous generations.
We find a quite palpable improvement, since we have risen from the i7-6820HK with its 659 points. Very good result, here it may be worth a change in the future. Between tests we have passed normal 3DMARk Fire Strike, its Ultra 4K version and Unigine Heaven. The magnificent results as always.
WE RECOMMEND YOU MSI unveils the new GAMING H170 / B150 motherboardsWe have also been able to verify that the read and write rates of the Crystal Disk Mark of the M2 NVMe SSD that it incorporates complies with what is established by the manufacturer: 3405 MB / s of reading and 1664 MB / s of writing.
Final words and conclusion about MSI VR One
The arrival of virtual reality systems to gaming PC has posed a problem given the number of cables required to connect the glasses to our computer, something that negatively affects player mobility. MSI wanted to put a solution to this problem and its bet was a backpack- shaped computer for the user to carry on their backs while playing. With this concept, cables are much less bothersome when moving and also allow us to take the entire system to our friends' house to play games.
Regarding the temperatures, at no time have we seen the entire assembly pass to more than 72ºC, it is true that the processor has heated up quite a bit (around 87ºC), but thanks to a good dissipation we have not noticed it when we were wearing it.
Regarding its autonomy, we have reached the hour and 15 minutes of use with our HTC Vive glasses. While if we use it as a desktop computer, we arrive until 4 and a half hours approximately. Considering that it is an i7-6820HQ and an 8GB GTX 1070 graphics card. It's great!
We actually found two pretty major improvements. The first is that the plastic structure does its job and has a light design, but we believe that with an anodized aluminum structure it can help to dissipate heat better and since we have a product of more than 1700 euros (the cheapest), That identifying touch of MSI should be.
The second problem we find is that you need peripherals and a connected monitor or television to start it. And so launch Steam VR… We think it would be interesting for them to create some kind of minimal interface (a Fast VR mode) such as a small LCD screen, to start STEAM and already manage the entire team.
We recommend reading our Virtual Reality PC configuration.
The MSI VR One as a concept we see interesting, but we think it is more practical for MSI to launch a backpack for its GS63VR and GS73VR laptops. Since for a similar price, we have a screen, keyboard and touchpad. With the possibility of a backpack accessory and an external battery to increase its duration.
Currently we find it in online stores and its price ranges from 1700 euros to 2400 euros with a GTX 1060 and GTX 1070 graphics card. A very interesting device for lovers of virtual reality.
