Valve works on a Steam Link app for Android, Apple iOS, and TVOS, which will allow PC gamers to stream their library of Steam games directly to compatible devices, as long as they are on the same network.

Steam Link will allow sending content to mobile devices

This new Steam Link app is slated to launch on May 21, presumably through Google Play for Android-based phones, tablets, TVs, and set-top boxes, and through the Apple App Store for iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. Nothing has been said about a possible Steam Link app for MacOS.

This technology requires a PC that can simultaneously handle high definition graphics and the output of the transmission itself, ideally it should be connected to the local network through one or two Ethernet connections, although it can also be used with a good 5 GHz wireless connection. The receiving device must log in to the Steam account to receive the signal. Valve does not say whether the app will provide on-screen controls for touch input on smartphones and tablets.

The versions of Android, iOS and TVOS will be released on May 21, but the Android variant will initially be offered as a beta version given the large number of devices based on this operating system on the market. Following the Steam Link app, the company will unveil the Steam Video app later this summer, which will stream all movies and TV shows purchased on the Valve platform through a local or mobile LTE connection.
