New details of the amd naples server platform
Table of contents:
We have new details on the AMD Naples server platform and based on the promising AMD Zen microarchitecture, which also brings Ryzen processors and Raven Ridge APUs to life. The new Naples platform is geared towards HPCs to maximize their performance.
AMD Naples Platform will have 128 PCI Express 3.0 tracks and 8 memory channels
The latest details show that Naples will be a highly GPU-optimized platform, AMD's new platform will have a total of 128 PCI-Express 3.0 tracks to support a vast number of devices. With a single 1U rack there will be support for 32 NVMe disks and four discrete graphics cards, it will also have two InfiniBand EDR interconnects to improve communication between storage and server systems.
The 1U rack is called “Maximize Compute Density” so it is highly likely that we will see very dense Naples system configurations with 32-core and 64-wire processors. The U2 rack is called "Maximize Performance / Node" and offers support for up to eight graphics cards, 26 NVMe drives and an InfiniBand EDR. AMD is working to launch Vega-based cards at the same time as Naples and to offer the best features and best performance. Different GPUs will communicate through a P2P interface to reduce costs and improve system bandwidth.
The AMD Naples platform will use an eight-channel memory controller to enable high memory density configurations and to improve performance in the most demanding HPC situations such as molecular research, rendering, data analysis and others.
AMD has created Naples with the aim of standing up in a sector largely dominated by the Intel Xeon platform, Sunnyvale's hope to finally catch up with its great rival in both gross performance and energy efficiency thanks to the 14nm manufacturing process FinFET. The new processors will arrive in variants of 16 and 32 physical cores.
