The official release of Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 has already taken place, and while we are waiting to start selling the brand's custom models, we are going to take the opportunity to carry out a detailed analysis of this graphics card compared to those of the previous generation. For this we have used the “ Founders Edition ” versions of the Nvidia brand itself, to make the comparison more accurate and realistic.

Technical specifications and benefits

We start with the basics for this comparison of Nvidia RTX 2060 vs Nvidia GTX 1060 vs Nvidia GTX 1070 vs GTX 1080, which will of course be the technical characteristics of all models. We must also take into account the Nvidia GTX 1070 Ti version that will also be part of this comparison, since it is also the one that is closest in all the results of the new RTX 2060.

In the previous table we have all the main properties of the 5 models. Undoubtedly one of the main innovations in this Turing architecture is the implementation of a graphic core with the new Tensor and RT cores oriented to ray tracing in real time and to virtual reality (VR) of the new generation that will soon will come.

On the other hand, we have a renewed GDDR6 memory that increases the frequency and transfer rate to no less than 14 Gbps, compared to the 8 Gbps that the GDDR5 and 10 Gbps of the GDDR5x of the GTX 1080 have. In this aspect also the RTX 2060 sweeps the previous generation, with a bandwidth of no less than 336 GB / s, staying very close to the GTX 1080.

The memory interface remains unchanged with respect to the GTX 1060, with 192 bit, compared to 256 bit for the other three models of higher ranges. Even so, the performance of this Turing graph is, in general terms, superior to 1070 and very close to 1080, as is the general trend of this table. The TDP has not undergone great variations either and is located between the GTX 1070 and 1070 Ti.

In general we see an increase in benefits typical of a miniaturization phase such as this, from 14 and 16 nm to 12 nm.

Nvidia RTX 2060 Founders edition graphics performance

To test the performance of this Nvidia RTX 2060, the guys at Guru3D have used a considerable list of games:

  • Battlefield VShadow Of The Tomb RiderDeux Ex Mankind DividedFar Cry 5Stars Wars Battlefront IIDestiny 2Strange Brigade

The test equipment they have used has been the following:

  • Motherboard : MSI X99A XPower Processor : Core i7 5960X (Haswell-E) 8c / 16t at 4.2 GHz Graphics Cards : GeForce RTX 2060 6GB GDDR6 Memory : 16 GB (4x 4096 MB) 2400 MHz DDR4 Power supply unit : 1, 200 watts Platinum Certified Corsair AX1200i Monitor : ASUS PQ321 Native 4K UHD Monitor

Performance test at Full HD resolution (1920x1080p)

In view of the results, we see that the distance between the RTX 2060 and the GTX 1070 Ti is really close, and in some cases the places are exchanged . With respect to the GTX 1060 the performance that we get from is around 40% or 50% more in most cases, and neither is the GTX 1070 a rival. On the part of the GTX 1080, at no time does it exceed it in performance, but it does stay really close on most occasions, even varying by two or three frames from each other.

They are really significant results, and they give us a very good perspective of where this RTX 1060 is located compared to the previous generation. We would be on par with the GTX 1070 and very close to the 1080. If we recall, the same thing happened at the time with the GTX 1060 and GTX 980, so it should not surprise us.

Performance test at WQHD resolution (2650x1440p)

In this case, we are still more or less in the same situation as the previous one, we have that the Nvidia RTX 2060 exceeds the GTX 1070 Ti by 4 games, and stays very close to 1080. The performance gap between the GTX 1060 and the RTX 2060 is still obvious.

In summary, we follow the same trend as in the previous section. Let's now see what happens to the results at maximum resolution.

Performance test at Ultra HD resolution (3840x2160p)

In this case, in 6 of the 7 games on the list that the Guru3D have tried, the RTX 2060 has surpassed the GTX 1070 Ti, although again they have both been very close. Once again the 1080 is taken to supremacy and this time it is ahead in some FPS more than the RTX 2060, especially in cases like Battlefield V and Stars Wars Battlefront 2.

We will now look at the performance obtained with the 3DMark benchmarking program. We have passed the FireStrike and Time Spy tests.

The truth is that the results are disparate in this regard, but they have an explanation. As much as the Ray Tracing system is needed in the case of Time Spy, this RTX 2060 draws its power and ranks as the best of the 5, narrowly outperforming the GTX 1080, and obtaining almost double the score of the GTX 1060.

On the other hand, in FireStrike with DirectX 11, it does not stand out as much, obtaining a discreet score close to the base GTX 1070. It is then demonstrated that it is a graph that shows its true power in Ray Tracing and last generation games.

Cost and price comparison

We continue with this comparison, and we enter what will surely be the most controversial section of all. This Nvidia RTX 2060 Founders Edition has gone on the market at a price of 369 euros, which has been 80 euros more than the day of departure of the GTX 1060.

A priori, it seems that the Nvidia have gone too far, making a product more expensive that, in this new generation, should be in the mid-range. Let's not lose perspective comparing it with the previous generation, we have at least two graphics cards that surpass this one, the RTX 2070 and the RTX 2080.

In general the cost of all RTX has risen quite a bit, and mainly due to the implementation of the new GDDR6 memories where wholesalers are charging about $ 20 more per module than in the previous generation.

Now we are going to take the results obtained in Battlefield V in terms of FPS and we are going to divide them by the cost of starting the card tasting. This way we will be seeing the price per FPS obtained in each model:

And look where, we get a pleasant surprise with this RTX 2060. In the three graphs we see that the cost per FPS is the cheapest for the 2060 in all cases. What does this mean? Well, when we bought one of the cards of the previous generation we were paying a higher price per FPS face than we earned with one of them. In other words, this graphics card is the cheapest in relation to performance / cost, although it seems a contradiction it is not, since we are obtaining superior performance in games in general than the previous generation.

Conclusion and final words

With this we end this first contact and comparison of Nvidia RTX 2060 vs Nvidia GTX 1060 vs Nvidia GTX 1070 vs GTX 1080.

We can clearly see that the Nvidia RTX 2060 is located very close to the previous generation GTX 1070 Ti. The superior performance compared to the GTX 1070 and 1060, is evident and much more if you look at its predecessor, the GTX 1060, although it was once a card with a lower starting price.

In addition, we see that the performance is very close to the GTX 1080, and it certainly should be, because in its day, the GTX 1060 outperformed the GTX 980 on almost all occasions, and this should be the case in this generation as well.

As for the price, it is the most debatable, and everyone will have their own opinion. If we based on the results, we are obtaining a lower cost per FPS than in the previous generation, but everything has evolved, including the rest of the hardware of the equipment, and this also influences greatly. What, in our opinion, we cannot accept, is that a mid-range product, because that is what it is, has a cost of almost 400 euros.

This is due to the fact that Nvidia has virtually no competition. It is true that the RX vega 56 faces this Nvidia RTX 2060 very closely, but also in price they are quite even, so we will automatically opt for the Turing model. We are confident that in the near future AMD of the bell as it did with Ryzen, and take out cards worthy of standing up to the highest-end models of Nvidia, and only in this way, we can see how prices fall considerably.

Now tell us what you think about these results that you have seen. Is it what you expected from this RTX 2060, will it be one of the models that is on your favorites list for purchase? Leave us your opinion in the comment box.
