NZXT Kraken X72 technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

NZXT Kraken X72 comes inside an elongated cardboard box with a fairly typical design on its family products. On the front of the box we see the brand logo and a high resolution image of the heatsink so that we can appreciate all the details.

The entire box is based on a very high quality print, and a design inspired by the company's representative colors. The manufacturer has taken advantage of the different sides and the back to include all the main technical specifications of the product.

Once we open the box we find the NZXT Kraken X72 kit itself, very well protected by a large piece of hard cardboard that is responsible for accommodating each of its parts individually to prevent it from moving during transport. In turn, the parts are covered by plastic bags to avoid scratching their surface. Next to the heatsink we find an independent bag that contains all the necessary wiring for the installation of the product and all the accessories necessary for its assembly.

NZXT attaches a mini-USB cable to the USB header for its connection to the motherboard and to be able to monitor all the parameters, as well as a cable that we will connect to a fan header of the motherboard and to a SATA power port to supply power to the pump and fans.

The NZXT Kraken X72 radiator is made up of a large number of aluminum fins that aim to maximize the heat exchange surface to maximize its cooling capacity, since the larger the surface the greater the capacity to transfer heat to another medium, in this case the air from the fans.

This radiator has dimensions of 394 x 120 x 27 mm and allows us to install the three fans attached by the manufacturer.

This radiator provides 33% more surface area than two-fan models, making it ideal for the most demanding users who want to push their processor to the limit. This radiator is formed by a high quality plastic and rubber structure, which achieves a perfect seal to prevent evaporation of the coolant inside. The two tubes that connect it to the pump come from the radiator itself, also rubberized and totally sealed.

As for the fans, the manufacturer provides us with three NZXT AER P120 units of the best quality. These are fans with dimensions of 120 x 120 x 25 mm and with PWM technology, to regulate their speed automatically according to the need for cooling of our processor. These fans have the capacity to rotate at a speed between 500 and 2000 RPM, generating a noise level between 21 dB and 36 dB.

The PWM functionality will take care of managing them in the best possible way , so that we have the best balance between cooling capacity and silence. These fans have high quality hydraulic bearings, which guarantees maximum durability by reducing the friction that occurs during operation.

We now look at the CPU block, which also contains the pump as usual in this type of product. This block has a design that has been taken care of to the maximum both in quality and aesthetics, therefore it includes an advanced RGB LED lighting system with a spectacular infinity mirror effect, which gives a very attractive result when it is working.

Being an RGB system we can configure it in 16.8 million colors and we can even make them change, this will help us give a unique touch of color to our PC.

The bottom of the block is made of high-quality, pure electrolytic copper, highly polished to make perfect contact with the processor's IHS, absorb as much heat as possible, and direct it to the radiator for dissipation. We highlight that it includes pre-applied thermal paste to make the assembly as simple as possible.

The interior of the block is formed by a system of microchannels, which have the purpose of maximizing the heat exchange surface between the copper and the refrigerant fluid. As we see it is a block in which all the details have been taken care of.

LGA 2066 socket installation

As expected, installation on the LGA 2066 socket is one of the easiest. Which is appreciated, since a processor as expensive as the i9 needs good cooling and every minute we save mounting, we can enjoy it sooner.

In case you need to install an AMD or Intel LGA 115X socket. You should use these accessories together with the ones in the first photo.

It is as simple as installing the four thread-type screws in the socket as indicated in the image.

This kit already comes with very good quality pre-applied thermal paste, so there is no need to apply more thermal paste to the processor. Once the block is placed, we only have to tighten the four threads on the block?

Finally, we will connect the SATA power cable, the PWM cable that sends a signal with the RPM of the pump to our motherboard and we will use an internal USB connector to be able to monitor and take full advantage of our new triple liquid cooling kit. We don't need anything else to run the NZXT Kraken X72 kit.

To test the actual performance of the heatsink we are going to stress with the powerful Intel Core i9-7900X at stock speed. As usual, our tests consist of 72 uninterrupted hours of work in stock values, since being a ten-core processor and with high frequencies, temperatures can be high.

In this way, we can observe the highest temperature peaks and the average that the heatsink reaches. We must bear in mind that when playing or using other types of software, the temperature will drop dramatically between 7 to 12ºC.

How are we going to measure the processor temperature? For this test we will use the internal sensors of the processor under the supervision of the HWiNFO64 application in its latest version. We believe it is one of the best monitoring software that exists today. Without further delay, we leave you the results obtained:

The NZXT CAM software will help us manage all the parameters of this NZXT Kraken X72 kit, such as the speed of the fans and the pump, and the temperature of the coolant.
