The notorious absence of Death Stranding at The Game Awards 2018 has made Kojima fans more desperate than ever to know when they will be able to get the new project exclusive to PS4. Fortunately it looks like it could come sooner than expected.

Kojima jokes with the arrival of Death Stranding in 2019

Announced at E3 2016, Death Stranding has yet to receive an official release date, though a dearth of imagery and lack of gameplay details could suggest it's still somewhat early in its development cycle. However, Kojima now seems to be joking with the fact that the long-awaited title will hit stores in 2019.

The latest issue of Famitsu includes a Kojima New Year message, which translates as “Is 2019 the year of the whale? Please wait for Death Stranding! " The joke refers to images from the revealing trailer, which shows stranded cetaceans. Considering that this comes directly from the man who runs the project, this is probably the most compelling evidence that Death Stranding's release is less than a year away.

Recently, a listing of Death Stranding was seen on the Walmart Canada website, showing June 30, 2019 as the release date. Additionally, a Walmart representative responded to a question on Twitter and confirmed that the advance order "will ship in June." Kojima's prank, on the other hand, was posted by a trusted source and seems to clearly suggest a 2019 release window for Death Stranding.

Still, Kojima may not have confirmed anything because he himself is not sure when the project will end. If that's the case, 2019 could simply be an optimistic goal that Kojima and his team are striving to achieve.
