First details of the radeon r9 390x
In addition to providing information about the Nvidias GM200 chip, SiSoftware has released details about the AMD Bermuda XT GPU that will bring to life the AMD Radeon R9 390XT card that will be the maximum exponent of the Pirate Islands family, at least for now.
The new AMD Bermuda XT GPU will consist of a total of 64 CUs totaling a whopping 4, 096 Shader Processors operating at a 1GHz frequency, plus the GPU will feature 256 texturing units or TMUs. At the moment no further information is known about the internal organization of the chip.
The Radeon R9 390X will feature 4GB of GDDR5 VRAM attached to a 512-bit interface just like the current Hawaii chip, presumably at a 5GHz frequency.
The card has a second 4092-bit memory interface that suggests it will make use of the new Stacked DRAM high-performance stacked memory that has been jointly developed by AMD and Hynix. This memory would act as a cache as an intermediary between the GPU and the GDDR5 to offer the maximum performance of the new Bermuda XT GPU.
Finally, the performance of the card in OpenGL is approximately 50% higher than the R9 290X (63.6 vs 42.4 GB / s), so it seems that AMD will offer a good performance increase with Pirate Islands.
