The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx processor beats AMD in this race for being the first 7nm PC processor. But here the thing does not end, in the last few hours we are seeing the first benchmarks of this ARM chip, which slightly exceeds an eighth-generation Core i5 CPU Intel.

Qualcomm will compete strongly in the portable market with its Snapdragon 8cx chip

Qualcomm first showed off its 8cx processor at the Snapdragon Technology Summit in 2018, but at Computex 2019, they're showing what it's capable of. The company showed some benchmark numbers using PCMark 10, demonstrating its superiority over Intel's proposal.

Test and performance equipment

For all tests (Performed by Toms Hardware) a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx reference equipment with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of NVMe storage was used together with Windows 10 May 2019 Update (1903). The competing PC (which looked like a Dell XPS 13 on some slides) had an 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8250U, 8GB RAM, 256GB NVMe storage along with Windows 10 October 2018 Update (1809).

In the Office app benchmark, Qualcomm 8cx came out slightly ahead of the eighth-gen Core i5 CPU overall, though it didn't win in all tests.

PCMark 10 Intel laptop (Expected) Qualcomm 8cx (Expected) 8cx, Run 1 8cx, Run 2
Total 3, 894-3, 970 4, 039-4, 139 4, 296 4, 356
Excel 4, 334-4, 627 3, 925-4, 141 3, 929 4, 083
Word 2, 943-3, 089 3, 499-3, 609 3, 841 3, 823
PowerPoint 3, 688-4, 145 3, 780-4, 250 4, 375 4, 464
Edge 4, 401-4, 4599 5, 032-5, 278 5, 163 5, 168

The graphical test consisted of 3DMark Night Raid, which has a native version of ARM. In these tests, the results from Qualcomm and UL showed that the Snapdragon 8cx Adreno 680 integrated graphics outperformed those of the eighth generation Intel Core i5:

3DMark Night Raid Intel laptop (Expected) Qualcomm 8cx (Expected) Snapdragon 8cx, Run 1
Overall 5, 047-5, 055 5, 710-5, 815 5, 841
Graphics Score 5, 172-5, 174 6, 138-6, 266 6, 251
Graphics Test 1 21.45-21.49 fps 24.84-25.31 fps 25.22 fps
Graphics Test 2 29.43-29.47 fps 36.21-37.10fps 37.05 fps
CPU Score 4, 431-4, 483 4, 093-4, 133 4, 261

Qualcomm's new chip provided the expected scores for both the Intel laptop and Snapdragon benchmark unit. Here the 8cx performed better in each of these tests, which has been a benefit of the ARM chips, but it should be noted that the Qualcomm design has an FHD display, while the competitor had a 2K panel, so things were not so even, because a 2K screen consumes more battery.

Qualcomm 8cx battery life

PCMark 10 - Autonomy Intel laptop (Expected) Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx (Expected)
Apps 8:27 - 10:21 16:11 - 17:01
Video 10:19 - 12:17 17:27 - 19:55
Idle 15:02 - 15:45 22:00 - 23:27

From these numbers, it seems that Snapdragon 8cx will rival a Core i5, which is very interesting because it adds a new competitor in the market of notebooks for Intel and AMD, in addition to improving the segment of ARM notebooks 'Always Connected' of great autonomy.
