Snapdragon 8cx is Qualcomm's new flagship processor for Windows 10 PCs, with the best performance while offering multi-day battery life and high-speed connectivity. We tell you all the details.

Snapdragon 8cx will make Windows 10 PCs with ARM better than ever

A key feature of the Snapdragon 8cx is that it has been specifically designed with notebook PCs in mind, and has been in development for several years. Qualcomm's previous PC processors have always been variations on its mobile platform. To provide the promised performance increases, Qualcomm has made changes to both the Kryo CPU and the Adreno GPU on the Snapdragon 8cx.

The chipmaker says Kryo is the fastest CPU ever built, with four performance cores and four cores designed for efficiency. The new processor features a larger cache memory with a total of 10 MB available, designed to speed up multitasking on machines running Snapdragon 8cx.

As for the Adreno 680 GPU in the Snapdragon 8cx, Qualcomm says it is 2 times faster than the previous generation and 3.5 times faster than what was available in the Snapdragon 835, which was driving the first generation of Windows 10 ARM PCs. The new GPU has twice as many transistors, twice the memory bandwidth, and the latest Direct X12 API. The result should be better graphics for users, whether they're creating or consuming content on a Snapdragon 8cx machine.

The improvements made to the Snapdragon 8cx components were not made with performance in mind. Qualcomm also says it emphasized lower power consumption. The Adreno 680 GPU can deliver twice the performance of the Snapdragon 850, but it does so while consuming up to 60 percent less power. Qualcomm promise a battery life of several days for the Snapdragon 8cx.

When it comes to keeping PCs connected online, the Snapdragon 8cx platform will use Qualcomm's Snapdragon X24 LTE modem. That modem is capable of offering 2Gbps speeds, at least where there are mobile networks that support that kind of performance.
