Ray tracing for current games thanks to modder pascal gilcher

If there is something we were expecting from this generation of graphics it was a good support for Ray Tracing and DLSS . However, not too many games featured these technologies. However, a modder under the pseudonym Pascal Gilcher has set out to change that by creating current game mods where Ray Tracing “installs” them .

Ray Tracing and DLSS technology

For those who still do not know what Ray Tracing and DLSS technology is, we will explain it to you in a second. We could say that there are two methods that Nvidia has found to raise the graphics one more level.

Ray Tracing

Certainly Ray Tracing It is not something new, since it has been used for many years in the cinema.

Simply, in a 3D environment one or several light sources are chosen and thousands of rays that simulate light rays emerge from them. The computer then calculates where they will bounce and how many times, applying certain lighting based on various formulas. With this method, we obtain photorealistic lighting, since everything shines despite not being mirrors, as in reality.

The problem arises when we see that to render an image with all its rays, the computer needs a lot of power. The process is incredibly cumbersome and before it was almost impossible to do it in real time at a decent frame rate. So movies were the only ones that could benefit from this incredible technology.

However, with the new generations a vein was opened and now we have enough power to see the first outlines of this technology.

DLSS

DLSS Initial Learning Process

DLSS is an acronym that stands for Deep Learning Super Sampling. If you are involved in the world of Artificial Intelligence, it will sound familiar to you, since it is basically Deep Learning.

DLSS is a way to get 4K resolutions without needing a lot of graphics power for it. This is achieved by resizing images. To learn, Nvidia's Artificial Intelligence is constantly rescaling images from 1080p to 4K .

As time goes by, she learns from her attempts and becomes more and more accurate. That is why with each update we are seeing substantial improvements.

What does this mean ?, While the PC renders images at 1080p , on our screens we see frames at 4K . This greatly improves the appearance (especially the saw teeth) without overloading the computer.

Modder Pascal Gilcher

As he calls himself on Twitter , he is a traditional graphic programmer and artist and is dedicated, among other things, to creating mods based on Ray Tracing. We do not know under what conditions he works, but we can predict that it is a difficult and long job.

Thanks to these mods, we can enjoy greater graphic immersion in some fairly recent titles. Among those he's done lately we have Battlefield 4, Crysis 3, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and Dying Light.

These implementations are not as noticeable as in other games with collaboration from Nvidia , but we can notice the difference. Above all, in the last two, the improvement in colors, light and ambient occlusion is striking.

In the case of Battlefield 4 and Crysis 3 , we have to highlight that the games already have excellent lighting, so it is difficult to see a great improvement.

It is also worth mentioning that some of these games suffer a considerable drop in fps, so you will need a powerful computer. In the case of Battlefield , we lose up to 40% of the frames, while in others we lose 10% or 20% , the estimated figure.

Be that as it may, we love to see how the community and developers are turning to this technology. Exploring new methods, practicing and learning from jobs will allow us to enjoy increasingly polished and immersive titles.

Both Ray Tracing and DLSS are technologies that plan to revolutionize the medium. Perhaps they are not as important as the jump from 2D to 3D , but they will mean an important step in the gaming world.

And you, what do you think about these technologies? Do you think they will be important in the future or that they will be another forgotten chapter of the video game? Share your ideas below.
