We have bad news for young Padawan, the Imperial forces have landed in Professional review with this Razer Atheris StormTrooper mouse, and reinforcements are expected. Razer has launched a new range of peripherals in commemoration of the Star Wars saga that we are pleased to discuss here. In this case it is a small wireless ambidextrous mouse with a 7, 200 DPI optical sensor that works on 2.4 GHz radio frequency and Bluetooth thanks to two AA batteries.

Before we begin, we thank Razer for always trusting us in lending us their products for testing.

Razer Atheris StormTrooper technical features

Unboxing and design

Razer Atheris StormTrooper is a great Razer initiative to commemorate the acclaimed Stars Wars saga with the creation of a series of peripherals consisting of this same mouse, an extended-size mouse pad, and a Blackwidow series keyboard. We will see all this here, but first we will start with the mouse.

And specifically we are going to dedicate a few lines to the presentation of this tiny mouse with the skin of the imperial forces. In fact, we have a box made of flexible cardboard of a size considerably larger than the product itself, and in which the matt black color predominates and a large photograph of the mouse seen from above. Also in the area is the Razer logo and the Disney logo.

On the back we have another photo of the mouse along with the basic information about it available in multiple languages. Keep in mind that it is a mouse that needs batteries to be wireless, so all this is reported in this place.

What we will do next is open the box and remove the contents of it, having:

  • Razer Atheris StormTrooper Mouse Two AA Batteries Energizer Razer User Manual and Stickers

We no longer have anything else, the mouse does not have any type of charging cable, having traditional AA batteries. And you will be wondering about the USB receiver, this is inside your own mouse in a compartment, and we will see it soon.

Razer Atheris StormTrooper is a mouse oriented to the type of tip grip or fingertip grip due to its small dimensions, which are 99.7 mm long, 62.8 mm wide and 34.1 mm high. In addition, its empty weight is only 66 grams, although to this we must add the 23 grams that each battery weighs, making a total of 112 grams, which is a full-size mouse.

As for the exterior design, we have a clear reference to Star Wars with the entire upper area printed on the helmet of a soldier of the Imperial troops. Good job of Razer opting for this skin and not Yoda's face. In any case, the materials that cover the outside of the mouse are quite thin plastic along with soft rubber sides.

In fact, let's take a closer look at this top of the Razer Atheris StormTrooper to find ourselves with just three buttons, plus the clear wheel. These are the two main buttons with a fairly large and standard size with identical design on both sides, and that is that it is an ambidextrous mouse.

In the upper area we have a very small button that is responsible for changing the DPI of the sensor in a total of 5 levels, which also has a small indicator light. Finally a wheel has been installed just in the central area, quite out and with a dotted rubber coating on the external area. The truth is that it is a fairly hard and sound wheel.

We continue with the side areas of this Razer Atheris StormTrooper, which are practically the same in terms of design, as they have an extensive, rather soft fluted rubber coating and with very good grip feelings. Although it is an ambidextrous mouse, we do not have buttons on the right side.

Specifically in the left side area we find the two navigation buttons with a very sharp design and placed just in the upper central area. They're out enough to be pressed comfortably effortlessly, and hard enough not to be accidentally pressed. The feel on the touch is very similar to a membrane type keyboard, chewing gum touch and no noise, I liked them a lot.

In total we have counted 5 buttons, which have the Razer Hyperesponse function and are also programmable from Synapse. Looking at the device from the front, we only appreciate a fairly simple equipment ergonomically speaking, although with a huge hole in the wheel area, with a simple aesthetic objective.

As for the back area, it presents a very slight curved drop towards the ground, but never reaching it. We must consider that the normal grip will be of the tip type, so the palm of the hand will almost never be in contact with the area. In any case, it is not uncomfortable for smaller hands that use the palm as well.

In the lower area we only find three temples built in large Teflon and that occupy a large part of the lower space. The advantage of this is that the slide will be smoother and above all more stable when we give it speed. Nice work by Razer on the overall design of this Razer Atheris StormTrooper.

Sensor and performance

Next, we will see in more detail the benefits of this mouse and its technical data, in addition to some important elements when it comes to installing it.

In addition to the 5 programmable buttons, Razer Atheris StormTrooper has a brand optical sensor that gives us a native resolution of 7, 200 DPI. It is not a lightsaber, but it is more than enough resolution to act in all kinds of resolutions, and as we will see later, it is a great sensor. It will allow us to configure a total of five sequential DPI hops that we can also modify from the Synapse software in steps of 100 DPI minimum. As standard they are configured with 800, 1800, 2400, 3600 and 7200 DPI. The sensor supports accelerations of 30 G and a speed of 220 IPS, at the level of normal gaming mice without a doubt.

Another important element will be the button that we have in the lower area, which will allow us to select the mouse action mode. In this case we have two possibilities, connection via Bluetooth LE and by 2.4 GHz radio frequency. We always recommend the latter because it has no latency. We also have the possibility to completely turn off the mouse so that it does not drain the battery.

And speaking of the battery, in this case it consists of two AA-size batteries that will be inserted through the upper area of the Razer Atheris StormTrooper. To do this, the upper casing will have to be removed from the small indentation at the rear to expose the hole. Razer ensures an average duration of 350 hours of continuous use, it is the advantage of having batteries, although the truth is that it is quite outdated and basic today.

But also in this interior area we have another important element, and it is the USB receiver that we must connect to our PC if we want to use the radio frequency connection. We will find it right in the central area, not very visible due to its small size.

Grip and sensitivity tests on movement

Well we come to the section where we count and comment in the best way that we can the sensations of use with this Razer Atheris StormTrooper, putting special emphasis on grip.

I start from the reference of the measurements of my hand, which are 190 x 110 mm, average-large size I suppose. The first thing I must say is that with this configuration of small mice I do not feel comfortable at all, but that does not mean that it may or may not be correct. And the truth is that, thanks to that design, which despite being short, is just as wide as normal mice, I find it ideal to use with Fingertip Grip type grip, or pointed.

For a large hand, the palm type will clearly not be possible, but the claw type will be possible if we support the edge of the palm in the rear area and take the edge of the main buttons, the truth is that this is a possibility, but with the pointed claw we get much better at the buttons and give the mouse maximum mobility and speed. For tiny hands, it will be compatible with all three types of grip for sure.

In my opinion, it is not an option for gaming, although for tastes colors. I see it more day-to-day oriented for desktops combining with other peripherals in the range, and especially for laptops, due to its configuration, versatility and portability.

Having said that, we are going to carry out the small performance tests of the sensor. It is important to mention that in this case we do not have precision assistance, it is only the pure performance of the sensor.

  • Variance of movement: The procedure consists of putting the mouse in an enclosure of about 10 cm, then we move the equipment from one side to the other and at different speeds. In this way the line that we are painting in Paint will take a measure, if the lines vary in length, it will mean that it has acceleration, otherwise they will not have it. And this 7, 200 DPI sensor is perfectly calibrated and has no acceleration, as seen in the image above. We won't have to worry about software support, as there isn't.
  • Pixel Skipping: Performing slow movements, and at different DPIs in a 4K panel, pixel skipping is not seen in any DPI setting. Of course, the more DPI, the more difficult it will be to navigate pixel by pixel, but the mouse has not shown any latency or inaccuracies. Tracking: In tests in games such as Metro, DOOM or through the selection and dragging of windows, the movement is correct without experiencing accidental jumps or plane changes. With the capacity of 220 IPS and 30 G, it will support much faster movements, even in gaming. Performance on surfaces: It has worked correctly on hard surfaces such as wood, metal and of course on mats. As is evident, we have only had problems with crystals, due to being an optical sensor.

Razer Synapse 3 software

We could not forget to give a good overview of the Razer brand software, dedicated to managing all the devices compatible with it. We will only need to install the Synapse 3 package, or if we already have it, it will ask us to update it as soon as it detects the power of the Razer Atheris StormTrooper force. We will now be able to use your configuration options.

And the first of the most important options is the possibility of customizing each of the five buttons that we have available on the mouse. We just have to click on one of them so that, through a drop-down menu, we can assign practically any function that we can think of.

Right in the lower area we have the possibility to quickly configure the mouse for a left or right hand, in addition to the well-known Hypershift function to reduce the response latency of the buttons. In this case we do not have a precision assistant, something positive and in my opinion it was superfluous.

Pressing in the upper tab area, we can navigate to the performance section, to configure ultrapolling and DPI jumps to our liking. Similarly, we have another section for the calibration of the surface, and to configure energy savings. Basically there are two options, the first makes the mouse go into inactivity after certain minutes, and the second is for the DPI button light to notify us when the battery is running low.

A necessary software whenever we have Razer peripherals on our PC.

Final words and conclusion about Razer Atheris StormTrooper

Well, thanks to the power of force, we have reached the end of our review of this small, but bully Razer Atheris StormTrooper. Razer has done a good job of design with its Atheris mouse geared towards day-to-day use, with a very well worked Skin and ideal for fans of the George Lucas saga.

A mouse with a large 7, 200 DPI optical sensor that has never shown signs of weakness, with precision and high-level performance. It features 5 configurable buttons and an ambidextrous design for users with small hands and almost forced grip in tip type for larger hands, so keep that in mind.

For many, latency may be a concern, being a wireless mouse, but the Atheris works perfectly and gives us the sensations of a wired mouse, we always recommend using the 2.4 GHz frequency. Something we do not like is that a fixed battery is not yet incorporated, instead of heavy AA batteries in this model.

Finally, this Razer Atheris StormTrooper is available to everyone on the official Razer site for a price of 60 euros, which is exactly the same price as the normal version, which we appreciate. In any case, it is still a mouse with a high price to avoid having a battery or a greater number of buttons. Did you like this StormTrooper version of the Atheris? So far we come, and may the force be with you.
