Razer sets the bar high again with its latest gaming headsets, the Razer Kraken Ultimate. It is a revised model of the classic Kraken, updated with THX Spatial Sound technology, 7.1 sound and RGB lighting to achieve a heart-stopping aesthetic. Do you want to know more? Keep reading.
Unboxing of the Razer Kraken Ultimate
The presentation follows the usual criteria of the company. A satin cardboard box with outstanding resin details dominated by corporate green and matte black. On its cover we already receive a view of the product as well as the logo and model of the brand accompanied by some outstanding strengths:
- Spatial Sound THX Active Noise Canceling Microphone Aluminum and Steel Frame Pressure Reduced Breathable Gel Pads for Razer Chroma RGB Lenses
On the other hand, the information regarding the characteristics of the product appears exposed by means of an infographic that expands the data that we have previously listed in various languages. You can also see the two-year warranty seal in the lower right corner.
When we open the box, we receive the Razer Kraken Ultimate firmly embedded in a matte black plastic mold, finding the rest of the documentation that accompanies them at the base.

Razer Kraken Ultimate Headphone Design
We enter here in matter, and is that the first impression when removing the headphones from the packaging is that they have a great solidity and excellent presence. The exterior finishes are all in matte black regardless of the materials, which vary between plastic polymers, aluminum and steel.
The supraural band
The Razer Kraken Ultimate are super-natural wired headphones. The plush top has a quilted outer covering with a soft, leatherette- like feel. The Razer brand engraving is observable in bas-relief, which, unlike the cover, does have a shiny finish that contrasts with the matte finish of the supraural band.
On the other hand, the internal face has a breathable black fabric covering under which there is a layer of memory foam. This is not particularly thick, which prevents the supraural band from being too thick without sacrificing user comfort.
We continue observing the ends and find a plastic piece in which the headband extenders are hidden to adapt the height of the headphones according to the user's needs. This consists of a total of ten adaptation points, each of them in intervals of five millimeters indicated numerically with a laser engraving.
These extenders are made of aluminum with a matte black finish that extends as a single piece towards the structure of the earpiece, surrounding the drivers with a metallic ring. This means that there is no hinge that allows horizontal rotation, although the material is flexible enough to partially rotate the structure.
The headphones
We then come to the main theme, and that is that the headphones of the Razer Kraken Ultimate are of a generous size, something that is doubly assured both by the dimensions of its 50mm drivers and the thickness of the pads.
In the center of the exterior structure we see a matte black plastic piece with the Razer logo printed on it. This is repeated on both headphones and is the piece that receives programmable RGB backlight. Around it we have a piece of black mesh that creates an intermediate space under which the structure of the drivers extends to which the aluminum headband of the supraural band extenders is attached.
At the junction between the headband and the headphones we find two connection points on both headphones that act as a hinge. This allows a certain vertical turn, although it is quite small (just ten degrees).
It is in the left earpiece where we find the connection of the cable of the Razer Kraken Ultimate and the microphone, as well as a scroll wheel for volume control and a switch for THX space audio.
Going on to comment on the padding, the material chosen is leatherette, being totally removable and featuring an internal fabric covering for the contact area with the drivers. The internal cavity is oval and quite generous, with room for even the largest ears.
The memory foam used is soft and very malleable, adapting very easily to the shape of our temples and ears. They have a very correct elasticity and we can only wait to see how it responds to long periods of use.
If we remove them for replacement or cleaning, the 50mm drivers integrated into the matte black plastic chassis are then visible. Also here are various certificates and quality stamps printed in black as well as details of the classic corporate green of the brand inside the handset.
It should be noted that the connection cable through the supraural band is covered in fabric to optimize its resistance despite the reduced thickness. The microphone
Without a doubt one of the most interesting aspects. We are facing a retractable microphone that can be integrated into the structure of the left earpiece when not in use. It turns out to be a solid but discreet model, ending in a cylindrical structure in which the active noise cancellation system is integrated.
The microphone rod features a thick rubber coating that surrounds a spiral steel internal structure. Its flexibility is very good and it keeps the shape we try to give it quite well. Of course, the most closed angles will not be maintained.
A white band is visible on the microphone itself, receiving a red backlight when it is off.The wire
Continuing the review, it is time to comment on the wiring of the Razer Kraken Ultimate. It is a twisted fiber model of two meters in length. It comes accompanied by a rubber clip to collect it when not in use and its termination is in a USB type A port. The choice of this finish over the traditional 3.5 jack is undoubtedly due to the commitment to surround sound and thus obviating the end user from having to exchange connectors and avoid accessories. It is a decision that may not be to the liking of all users, which is why we have considered it convenient to highlight it. The cable itself is not removable, although both in the earpiece and in the USB we can see that they have plastic finishes to reinforce the termination of the cable.
Putting the Razer Kraken Ultimate headphones to use
We have had Razer Kraken Ultimate in use for about two weeks. With their 390 grams they are robust headphones, with a weight that provides solidity but does not make our neck suffer after several hours of use. The external finishes do not expose any element and the overall impression is very compact.
The generous length of the 2m cable allows us a wide range of movements and the fact that it is braided is a matter to be appreciated by both the most demanding and the most rugged users. On the supraural band, it is true that it is not the most spongy model we have used, but the pressure it exerts on our head is minimal and the amount of memory foam in the inner lining is more than enough.
The padding of the pads is undoubtedly our great favorite, not only because of the choice of material but because the cooling gel they have very effectively prevents that feeling of heat that tends to appear after a few hours of use in many headphones. We also use glasses when playing and for our part we have not noticed that typical pressure on the temples generated by the pads.
The height adjustment and the choice of stainless steel and bauxite aluminum make the headband a solid structure, although it is true that the most demanding users may miss some lateral movement and find the vertical angle scarce, but this is already a matter of tastes.
Our general feeling has been of great comfort. The longest period of continuous use that we have had with the Razer Kraken Ultimate has been more than four hours and we have not experienced sweat from the pads or feeling tired from the weight, so in ergonomics on our part we have been satisfied.
Sound quality
And yes, we know that comfort is important, but these are headphones and here what matters most is the sound quality. We must tell you that from the outset we are not very fans of 7.1 sound, and by "not very fans" we mean that our skepticism or level of demand with everything that is not stereo sound is quite high when it comes to headphones.
When we connect the Razer Kraken Ultimate for the first time to our PC, the sound we will receive will be stereo. It is by pressing the button integrated in the left earpiece that we can activate or not the THX spatial audio, technology that simulates a series of virtual speakers to optimize the position and origin of each of the sounds that we can hear. And what do we think of the effect? The truth is that it depends on the occasion and use. For video games that support serial or multi-channel 7.1 sound, it offers an orientation plus since we can effectively distinguish more clearly the origin and proximity of all kinds of sounds. The same is true for movies and series (which we have generally preferred to enjoy in stereo), although the resulting effect may be puzzling at first.
In general what we should say is that the quality of the bass has seemed excellent to us. Without a doubt, the 50mm drivers give their best and the resulting sound is more than satisfactory both in stereo and with surround THX. Moving on to commenting on the microphone last, the first aspect we value most is active noise cancellation. This, together with the parameters that we can modify in the Razer Central software, makes the Razer Kraken Ultimate microphone the most satisfactory that we have used to date in headphones. External sound filtering is non-existent and the voice clarity is impeccable, so 10/10 in this regard.
As an annotation to the volume, the maximum is one of the highest we have experienced to date in headphones, while at zero we do not hear any type of background sound beyond a barely perceptible static.RGB lighting
If you did not have enough with all of the above, it is the turn of the little lights. The backlight on the Razer Kraken Ultimate is an accessory that undoubtedly gives these headphones a great personality, and not only because of the RGB.
The crux of the matter is that it is the central razer imager that receives lighting, but the double rear structure, separated by a metal mesh, allows light to filter behind it. This generates an aura effect that filters from the logo to the periphery without the need for additional LEDs.
It is pertinent to note that headphone lighting does not allow for spontaneous multi-color or gradient effects since there is only one LED, so our customization options at Razer Central will stick to spectrum rotation or a static color choice. In turn, this lighting can be added to that of other Razer peripherals either through Synapse or, for more control, the Chroma Studio extension.
software
You already know what we think of Razer Central. The three-headed snake software is our favorite for both options and interface, and the Razer Kraken Ultimate is no stranger to it.
From the beginning, in its central menu we have the slot to add, remove or modify parameter configuration profiles. These profiles can be both headphone- specific and a complete package that brings together all of our Razer peripherals.
The tabs between which we can move within the Razer Kraken Ultimate are:
- Sound: here we find the volume regulation, access to the Windows Sound Properties and Demo of the THX Spatial Audio. Mixer: here we can establish the applications or games to which we can apply stereo or surround sound, as well as its calibration. Improvement: it allows us to individually regulate the bass, sound normalization and clarity of the voice. Equalizer: set the decibel levels based on the hertz according to different profiles (game, movie, music) or create your own adjusted to our preferences. Microphone: we assign the volume of our microphone, sensitivity and improvements such as active noise cancellation or vocal clarity among others. Lighting: we assign the intensity of the brightness and the deactivation of the lighting due to inactivity. It is also here where we can assign fast or advanced effects using Chroma Studio.

Final words and conclusions about the Razer Kraken Ultimate
The market in the world of PC gaming headsets is really huge, so the competition at the highest level is no longer just about the quality of the sound, but also the construction materials. In both cases we can tell you that the Razer Kraken Ultimate gives the size to spare, so if a premium gaming headset is what you are looking for, considering them on your list is mandatory.
The possibility of synchronizing the RGB lighting with the rest of your Razer peripherals if you already have one is something that you must keep in mind since the lighting of these headphones is very visually pleasing, something that those obsessed with the most gaming aesthetic will appreciate. from your command center.
The retractable microphone in the earpiece has always seemed to us a much more recommended option for those who are removable since the possibility of losing it disappears from the field of play. This added to the excellent work that the micro carries out has made this section one of the most satisfied with the experience.
We recommend reading: Best gaming headphones.
One aspect that has not convinced us so much is the choice to make this model purely aimed at the PC public, counting here with an exclusive USB type A connection. Without a doubt, the braided cable is resistant and of a very good length (2m), but we are left with the thorn that there are competing models within its price range that also have a 3.5 jack. We understand that USB is THX Spatial Sound's commitment to surround sound, but we also think that users who tend to favor stereo may miss this type of connection.
The stereo and surround sound of the Razer Kraken Ultimate is also not far behind, reaching a really high maximum volume and absolute silence to a minimum. The cushions foam structure itself allows a bit of sound filtering if we have the volume very high, so you must watch it if you share the room with someone else. This is because they do not have a very high density (which would also increase their weight) but this also generates a better feeling of comfort and reduces the heat that accumulates in our ears even after long sessions of use.
The starting price of the Razer Kraken Ultimate is on its Official Website for € 149.99. It is undoubtedly a high budget, although it falls within the average of premium gaming headphones. It is therefore in your hands to decide if its benefits meet the requirements you are looking for. We have been broadly convinced, so what do you say?
