We begin by describing how this Razer Ripsaw HD comes into our hands, a revamped external grabber with features now capable of passing 4K resolutions to our monitor, something the Razer Ripsaw was not capable of doing and is very necessary today.
Razer Ripsaw HD comes in a small thick cardboard box with its widest opening, displaying the brand's typical colors, namely green and black. Nor do they forget to place a large photograph of the grabber in the upper and lower area, always accompanied by relevant product information.
We only have to open the box to find a product very well stored and with enough protection we must say. The main device is stored in a separate box and in turn in a foam mold that protects it from the external action of cables and so on. Inside this box we will also find the instruction manual for the equipment installation.
We continue to take items out of the box, and now it's time for connectivity. On this occasion, the number of cables has been reduced to 3, which are: the USB Type-C - Type-A cable to connect the grabber to our PC, an HDMI cable and a 3.5mm Jack cable for audio.
Without a doubt the bundle is quite complete, although we will still need an extra HDMI cable to connect Razer Ripsaw HD with our TV or monitor. But of course, Razer intuits that we will have one at home for the current connection, but, and if we only have a DisplayPort for our monitor. Well then friends, we will have to buy another HDMI, since the capture does not have a DisplayPort interface.
Well, we have already managed to get everything out of the box, although it is time to talk a little more about this Razer Ripsaw HD. It is a capture machine that follows the exact same philosophy as the Razer Ripsaw, also analyzed by us in 2016, which shows that the brand already needed an update for its capture equipment, especially if we take into account the complete and powerful products that we have for voice over, and CAM video recording, for example.
In this case, we have measures of 105 mm long, 87 mm wide and 17 mm high, which makes a team a little smaller than the previous generation, the manufacturer does not specify the weight, but it will be around 180 grams approximately.
The design is very simple, but of quality, since we have a complete cover made of matt black painted aluminum, very beautiful, but a magnet for prints as is usually the case with these finishes. Timidly on the upper face we have a great brand logo.
If we turn it around and look at the lower area, we will find an area in which a fairly extensive rubber base with grooves is installed to improve the coverage on the surfaces. We did not find any type of opening for cooling the device, and we have noticed that it does heat up somewhat after a while in operation. The good thing is that the aluminum itself is a good conductor of heat and allows you to cool the interior.
Without further ado, let's head to the front of this Razer Ripsaw HD. In it we find a very clean surface with just two 3.5mm Jack analog ports as microphone input and audio output, to know at all times what sound we are recording.
Of course the most interesting connection here will be the external microphone, since it is very necessary for users who want to add comments to their games or streaming. We will have, however, the limitation of having to use USB microphones directly on our PC with the help of some software such as OBS.
We also have a very small status light on this front that indicates the status of the capture device. A much smaller light than the previous generation, although with the same function.
In the back area we find the rest of the Razer Ripsaw HD connectivity, with it consists of two HDMI ports, which will function as the passage of the digital video and audio source from the console or PC to our monitor. Both ports are HDMI 2.0, it is important because in this way we will have free passage for a video source in 1440p (2k) or 2160p (4K) at 60 Hz, thus adapting to resolutions widely used natively by current monitors.
Be careful because it only allows the passage of video in these resolutions. Recording will always take place at Full HD resolution at 1920x1080p and 60 FPS rate. We must always keep in mind that the resolution settings in the capture program, such as OBS, will have to be the same as the one that is capable of capturing Razer Ripsaw HD. This is very important if we are playing in 2K or 4K.
Finally we have the USB Type-C 3.1 Gen1 connection to establish communication with our PC, necessary to start and manage video recording, even if we are playing on a console. So the connection scheme will be the same as in the previous generation. Of course, in this case, Razer has implemented a much more current Type-C, which will also supply power to the team.
Installation and operation
First of all, we will need to connect Razer Ripsaw HD to the streaming or recording system, be it our console or our PC, anyway, we are going to need a PC to manage the capture.
For now let's forget about the USB port. We will have our PC or console where we are going to play or where we have the content that we want to capture. The connection is simple, we connect an HDMI cable from the graphics card / console to the HDMI that says "input", and another HDMI cable to the monitor, which says "output". If we want headphones or a microphone, well in the corresponding Jack.
Once this is done, we connect the USB to the computer where we want to save the video or stream. Obviously it can be the same PC.
Now we install Razer Synapse 3, which we can download from the official website. Synapse only, we don't need Razer Cortex. The program will detect the grabber and will surely ask us to restart. Then, we will have to install a capture and streaming program, for example, OBS, Xsplit, Mixer or the one you like the most, it offers compatibility with all of them.
For example, we have used OBS and have had no problem detecting and configuring our grabber. We recommend placing the encoder using hardware and a Bitrate higher than 4000 in the output configuration so that the video does not look pixelated if we want to capture it. If we want to stream of course we will have to adjust it to our connection.
We leave some screenshots of videos captured playing DOOM with a bitrate setting of 8000 and mkv format. The capture quality is very good as we can see without any pixelation, good definition in 1080p and also good audio quality. From Synapse you can manage the audio volume of the grabber. What we have noticed is that in demanding capture conditions like this , sometimes the image lags a little, a few thousandths of a second. It is not serious, but we recommend testing the configuration until you find the perfect balance.

Razer has certainly done a good job with this Razer Ripsaw HD, a grabber that already needed an upgrade. The philosophy remains the same, a very easy to configure and connect equipment to capture and stream in a simple and uncomplicated way. It is ideal for consoles for its extensive compatibility with PS4, Xbox ONE and Nintendo Switch and streaming from our central PC.
Another advantage that we will have is that it is an external grabber, although with the limitations of this type of hardware, but with the possibility of connecting microphones, headphones and, above all, not needing external power to function. Compatibility with the main streaming platforms is assured, as well as the main capture programs.

Another novelty is that it allows the passage of a video signal at 4K @ 60 FPS, although the maximum recording resolution will be 1080p @ 60Hz. Yes we must say, that sometimes it was necessary to restart the PC for OBS to correctly detect the grabber. We must also fine-tune the capture program so that the signal is not recorded lage, cut or pixelated. But in general, the experience that we are going to obtain is very good.
Razer Ripsaw HD will be released for a price of $ 159 USD, a figure identical to that of the European continent. We see that it is another novelty, since the Ripsaw came out at a cost of 180 euros. It is a really attractive figure and it is one of the best options in 1080p recording.
