In a new very didactic video by the YT HDD Recovery Services channel, we can see what the process of repairing a USB key is, a meticulous process that requires a good pulse and the necessary tools to solder and desolder safely.

This is the process to repair a USB drive in a laboratory

Previously we saw a video about the repair of a hard drive, this time we see how a USB drive is repaired, with storage in a solid state. This time, we see a PNY USB drive with 128 GB of capacity.

The unit to be repaired was brought by a local customer. The USB was accidentally bent while placed on a laptop. As detailed, this is one of the most common problems when dealing with units of this type.

In the video they explain that, due to the fragility of the components and the printed circuit of this uncle of units, the solders usually break or loosen, which causes the failure of the unit and that it is not recognized in the system in any way. In this particular case, the area that appears to have been affected when the USB is doubled is that of the first chip that functions as a controller.

The solution? Desolder and re-solder.

Since we are talking about very small solders, a hot air soldering iron and a type of Flux gel are used to desolder the chip. The next step is to replace all the tin and re-add the chip using the hot air soldering iron.

Everything is done with extreme care not to damage the printed circuit. The person in charge of the repair also takes the opportunity to re-solder a resistance that was out of place on one side of the chip. For this, a normal soldering iron was used, which is also used for the replacement of tin.

Finally, the entire circuit and chips are cleaned with isopropyl alcohol, which is ideal for this task, and a little hot air is applied to dry more quickly. At the end of the video we see that the unit is recognized in Windows without any problem and the data is accessible again.
