The great competition of manufacturers of PC chassis in the market gives us an indisputable advantage: that of having a very wide range of designs, prices and benefits. There is practically a chassis adapted to each pocket. The manufacturer Riotoro in this regard have a lot to say. This company was created during 2015, and is a manufacturer of gaming items including chassis and refrigeration units. In addition, you want to enter the Spanish market in the sale of chassis. That is why we have a preview of its new creation the Riotoro CR1088, a mid-range chassis that will not leave you indifferent.
Of course, thank Riotoro for the trust placed in us by transferring this chassis to us for analysis.
Riotoro CR1088 technical characteristics
Unboxing and design
Riotoro CR1088 is located inside a neutral colored cardboard box, this being the most common presentation for the chassis in this range
When opening its packaging we find a very well protected product. In the first instance we have two pieces of cork that protect its sides with a plastic bag that completely wraps the box. Taking out the chassis we see that both the documentation and the mounting elements come inside it, in this way we will avoid losing any screw or paper. It should be noted unlike most chassis, the opaque part is located on the left and the transparent part on the right, so its normal placement would be on the user's left.
At first glance we find that the Riotoro CR1088 chassis is very compact to support ATX type plates, light and relatively wide. On its right side we see a side panel made of transparent PVC widened on the inside to provide more space for the power cables for the graphic units.
Its measurements are 394 x 230 x 360 mm and a weight of 3.9 kg. Small and light chassis, among other things because it does not have tempered glass, something that we miss in a tower of these characteristics and range.
One of its distinctive features is its front. It is designed in the form of a honeycomb mesh with a more pronounced central division of around 2 cm and the Riotoro logo on the lower left. All this will be illuminated with LEDs with a RGB range of 256 colors. In the entire lateral structure of this front there is a PVC line that houses more RGB lighting. Its design we can say that it is original with enough lighting elements. But dust is probably a common element in it due to its plastic mesh structure.
If we look at the upper front we find the I / O panel surrounded by another element also with lighting. We have two USB 3.0 ports, 3.5 mm jack connectors for audio and micro and the power and reset buttons.
We highlight the possibility of configuring the lighting aspect comfortably from a button located on this panel. This offers us different fixed colors each time we press, a rainbow mode that we can also stop in the color we want.
On the right side we find a solid black panel and a panel with insert filter for the PSU, since it is located vertically in the chassis.
At the rear we find in the lower right part a vertical configuration compartment to house the power supply, and just above a ventilation grille for this compartment. The back plate for the input and output connectors on the motherboard. It should be noted that it will be placed upside down, leaving the 7 available expansion slots on top of the chassis. Finally, in the lower left part there is an air outlet for a non-pre-installed 80 mm ventilated, something scarce for the times.
Continuing with the base, we have a relatively small opening with filter to allow air exchange inside and outside. The support elements are finished in rubber to eliminate noise and have a generous ground clearance.
Interior and assembly
We will go to see its interior, Riotoro CR1088 is a compact tower, so we will pay special attention to the space available for hardware elements. If more, we will remove the transparent panel by loosening the two hand screws that hold it.
The first thing we look at is in the area of the motherboard. In the Riotoro CR1088 we can install models from a mini ITX to an ATX, so flexibility is assured. Regarding the use of CPU coolers, the chassis supports a height of 122 mm, offering difficulties in installing high-performance models with considerable sizes.
We have 7 slots to install a total of 3 GPUs. Two of them are reusable but the rest are fixed, so we must remove them with the use of force. We must say that they come too well fixed, so it is possible that the fixed parts bend during the process. In addition, we advise that these be removed before placing the motherboard to avoid damage to it
The characteristic reverse installation of the components is striking, since the motherboard is left with the CPU on the bottom, the Slots and the GPU on top and the transparent panel on the right, all boasting of its own personality.
The graphics card will be able to reach a length of 300 mm, perhaps somewhat insufficient for the most demanding models and top of the range with large dimensions. We can highlight that with the installation of the GTX 1080 Ti we have just enough space to place a radiator in the front.
Despite being a very compact chassis, we have a compartment divided into two parts so that the bundle of cables remains hidden from our eyes. For this purpose, we will have enough space to manage them. The routing of cables is very good, having openings both on the side to pass the ATX connections of the board and GPUs, as well as lower and upper to feed the motherboard and the SATA ports.
In the rear section we have a removable tray to install two 3.5-inch storage units and another two of 2.5, or 2.5 box, more than enough considering the dimensions.
The power supply unit is completely isolated from the electronic components and also has at least surprisingly ample space for managing cables and large sources.
In the cooling section, we can install the following fan configuration:
- Front: 120mm x2 (one included) Rear: 80mm x1 (not included) Top: N / A
We will be able to achieve a not too optimal air flow, since the rear opening is insufficient unless we install a high-speed unit for extraction. If we add to this the upper and lower openings that allow the extraction of air only by the effect of convection, cooling is a section to improve.
For fans of liquid cooling there is still hope as they can mount some configurations on the front:
- Front: 120 / 240mm
In all the ventilation openings except for the 80 mm rear, we will find easy-to-maintain magnetic dust filters.
To finish we leave you with a gallery of images of the assembly made in the test group.
Final words and conclusion about Riotoro CR1088
There is no doubt that the Riotoro CR1088 chassis has its own personality. The brand is committed to a super compact, light configuration with abundant and identifying lighting.
We must bear in mind that for its dimensions the possibility of installing both small plates such as the Mini ITX and the ATX offers great versatility and the space for components and cable management is very good. In addition, it offers enough space to install liquid cooling in normal formats.
In our assembly we have not found any type of problem. Being a fast and very clean assembly and with high quality components: AMD Ryzen 2700X, Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, 16 GB DDR4, Asus motherboard and top of the range power supply .
Another detail that goes unnoticed is that it offers a four-wire port to synchronize the front lighting with some RGB LED strip that we buy independently, although it does not have synchronization with the ventilation lighting.
We recommend reading the best boxes of the moment
As for the aspects to improve, we highlight insufficient rear cooling with support for a device of only 80 mm, which also does not come incorporated. In the same way, we could also have another fan more than 120mm as standard for its front.
Another aspect to consider is the distribution of slots with welded grids, I feel it necessary to use force to eliminate them. And the lack of a window built in tempered glass, especially considering the price of this chassis.
The recommended retail price is 65.80 euros. We think it is a somewhat high price given the problems encountered. Although it is true that it is a chassis that gives off its own personality, striking by its design and with its abundant lighting, and really adjusted dimensions providing ease of transport and storage.
