Riotoro onyx 750w review in Spanish (complete analysis)

Table of contents:

Anonim

The Californian brand Riotoro has been selling a wide variety of Hardware products for more than 2 years we have among us its Riotro Onyx 750W power supply. This manufacturer has always stood out for its boxes, power supplies, cooling products and peripherals. Despite its foundation back in 2014, it is still unknown to many users in Spain and Latin America.

Today, we'll take a look at its mid-range power supply series, the Onyx. Specifically, the 750W model. It is a semi-modular unit with 80 Plus Bronze certification, and we will know its quality in this review. Intrigued? Let's go there!

We are grateful to Riotoro for the trust placed in assigning this product for analysis.

Technical Specifications Riotoro Onyx 750W

External analysis

The exterior of the box shows us the source and some of its most important characteristics, which we will discuss below…

The philosophy followed by Riotoro to create this power supply is very clear on the back of the box. According to them, this ONYX is a "sweet spot" of performance, reliability, and pricing suitable for real-world applications .

On its most relevant characteristics, we have a 3-year warranty (a standard value in the market, although it could be 5…) , an 80 Plus Bronze efficiency certificate and a comfortable semi-modular wiring system.

Remember that the 80 Plus certificate is not a direct indication of quality! More information in this article

We open the box of the Riotoro Onyx and we find a bubble wrap ( not shown in the photo above) quite tight but that should be more than enough. Apart from the source itself, it includes the power cable, modular cables, user manual, screws and various cable ties. The latter is appreciated?

We will take a look at it from the outside, with a rather 'standard' appearance that leaves no room for many comments. It is a design that does not risk (something that we applaud, here every euro matters and it is better that it is invested indoors) and it will look good in any setting.

We see a sufficiently well used front grille, the 120mm fan that we will talk about in the internal analysis, and the power table. As expected, we are facing a source with a single 12V rail, like most of its competitors.

As we have already indicated, this Onyx makes use of a semi-modular wiring system. In other words, the most relevant connectors are fixed (ATX and CPU) and cannot be disconnected from the source, while the rest (PCIe, SATA and Molex) are modular and can be connected and disconnected as required by the user. It is a fairly comfortable system in high-power sources like this, since it is normal for several connectors to remain.

The ATX cable is meshed, while the rest are flat. On which is the best system, depends on the user. We prefer flat cables, while in the ATX we like meshed or flat but without too many subdivisions, since some are really messy. No problems in these respects.

Let's take a look inside…

Internal analisis

The manufacturer of this Riotoro fountain is Great Wall, a company capable of creating platforms with very good capabilities at a low price.

The technologies used are the same as those of the majority of sources that we analyze on this website: LLC on the primary side and DC-DC on the secondary. However, this time we are surprised to say it. We are talking about internal topologies used in higher-end sources, even more than 150 euros. Certainly, seeing them in an affordable model has enough merit.

It is strange to see LLC technology in a source with 80 Plus Bronze efficiency, being more typical of Gold and superiors. The truth is that, according to the data of the 80 Plus itself and Cybenetics, these sources tend towards a corresponding efficiency to Silver. In fact, the 650W model is certified as Silver and advertised as Bronze. This measurement is quite common in brands that do not want to deceive their customers: when they have a range of 'tightrope' sources between two certificates, it is given the lowest. Good gesture from Riotoro?

The primary filter is made up of 2 X capacitors, 4 Y capacitors and two coils. Additionally, we have an NTC thermistor for protection against current spikes that occur at ignition. We like to see it, although it is missing that an electromagnetic relay accompanies it (they are not usually seen for these prices). It also has an MOV for protection against power surges.

The two rectifier diode bridges are GBU1508, are cooled by a small heatsink and are amply dimensioned for this source.

The primary capacitors are a pair of 420V and 330uF Nippon Chemi-Con KMRs (they operate in parallel so they combine 660uF), with a resistance of up to 105ºC. It is a top quality Japanese condenser. This is great news, but it remains to be seen what happens on the secondary side, which, contrary to what its name indicates, is more important.

What will be the secondary capacitors? Surprise! They are all Japanese, from Nippon Chemi-Con, Rubycon and Nichicon. We also found more solid capacitors than expected (those of this type have extreme durability). It is very surprising to see this in an affordable source.

According to Riotoro, this source has OVP, UVP, OCP, OPP and SCP protections. We were missing OTP, but we have been able to verify that this protection is actually present, great news. The chip in charge of implementing these protections (except OPP and OTP, which are implemented by other means) is the Sitronix ST9S429-PG14.

Moment to talk about the fan, and this is where it is most noticeable that this is an affordable source. The model used is a Loon D Yacht, which according to the model name would correspond to a Sleeve bearing (those with the worst durability). However, we know from the Loon Yacht itself that the models with a gray label correspond to hydraulic or rifle bearings.

Hydraulic / rifle bearings are upgraded versions of Sleeve, capable of increased durability and silence. Regarding reliability, this specific model is used in other sources with a 5-year warranty or more, which suggests that it will be able to live beyond the 3-year warranty period. It is improvable, still.

Test bench and performance tests

We have carried out tests to regulate the voltages, consumption and speed of the fan. To do this, we have been helped by the following team:

TESTING BENCH

Processor:

AMD Ryzen 7 1700 (OC)

Base plate:

MSI X370 Xpower Gaming Titanium.

Memory:

16GB DDR4

Heatsink

-

HDD

Samsung 850 EVO SSD.

Seagate Barracuda HDD

Graphic card

Sapphire R9 380X

Reference Power Supply

Bitfenix Whisper 450W

The measurement of voltages is real, since it is not extracted from Software but from a UNI-T UT210E multimeter. For consumption we have a Brennenstuhl meter and a laser tachometer for fan speed.

Test scenarios

The tests are divided into several scenarios, in order from lowest to highest consumption.

CPU load GPU charging Actual consumption (approx)
Scenario 1 None (at rest) ~ 70W
Scenario 2 Prime95 None ~ 160W
Scenario 3 None FurMark ~ 285W
Scenario 4 Prime95 FurMark ~ 440W

The fan speed tests are performed with an overclock at 1.31V, while the consumption tests are done at 1.4125V, exceeding 450W of actual consumption at maximum load.

In order to maintain the reliability of the tests, especially the consumer one (the most sensitive), and taking into account the changing nature of the loads on a device, the sources shown here have been tested the same day and in the same situations, so we always retest the source that we use as a reference, so that the results are comparable within the same review. Between different reviews there may be variations due to this.

Voltages and consumption

We have not found any anomaly in the voltage regulation of this source.

Regarding its consumption, we have been quite surprised to see similar values to the Bitfenix Whisper 450W that we have as a reference, which has 80 Plus Gold certification, reaffirming in our position that this Onyx seems to tend more to be 'Silver' than 'Bronze'.

Fan speed

Loudness is not an aspect that stands out in this source… but it is more than acceptable.

When checking the loudness of this source, we have found a ventilation profile that is not too aggressive, nor is it particularly relaxed, always maintaining 'reasonable' revolutions per minute. That is, less than 900rpm under low loads and less than 1, 200 under synthetic loads. For the range in which it is located, we can say that it is an acceptable profile .

We believe that the range to which we must give greater importance is that of low loads, since it is when the equipment in general is quieter and where a poorly regulated source can take too much prominence. Here we can say that the Riotoro Onyx is not inaudible like other higher-end sources, but it is quiet enough for the vast majority of PCs. Few will be able to perceive its loudness.

At higher loads and at rpm higher than 1000, we know from the implementation of the Yacht Loon D12SM-12 in other sources that it is starting to get noticed unless its loudness is 'masked' by other PC fans. Taking into account that in Onyx this would only happen at high loads, we conclude that here it is also valid for most equipment. You can't be too picky about an affordable source.

Is it time to recap…?

Final words and conclusion about Riotoro Onyx 750W

The medium and medium-low range of fonts is quite complex. Among all the options available, there are a large number of low-quality models, even from certain well-known brands. For this reason, it should be rewarded that even small companies like Riotoro want to demonstrate to the market the validity of their products with an affordable model of such good quality as this.

For a price that is not very high, we obtain a truly remarkable internal quality with our own technologies of superior ranges such as LLC and DC-DC, without forgetting the use of 100% Japanese capacitors, a complete protection system and more, being all very appropriately dimensioned. Come on, Riotoro has focused on the most important thing.

At the functional level, the semi-modular cabling system surprises and is surely an important plus for many users. Other than that, there aren't many more frills. Its efficiency, equivalent to an intermediate between Bronze and Silver, is very acceptable and the 3-year warranty period is an advantage, although less than some competitors that offer 5 years.

Regarding its sound, we can not complain about the price that this source has, but it is definitely not inaudible like other more expensive options. We also find one of the most trimmed aspects in the fan, whose quality is acceptable, but also improvable. All of this reminds us that this is an affordable font and not a high-end model.

We recommend reading our updated guide to the best power sources.

Now let's talk about prices. The 750W model is for sale at Xtremmedia at a price of 76 euros, while its 650W sister is priced at 67 euros. In both cases, good price but especially in the 650 model, since the 750 collides with sources of less power but more quality and performance. It should be noted that we have come to see them for less than 60 euros, where they are no longer very competitive and become irresistible.

Who is the Riotoro Onyx worth for? The truth is that its good characteristics make it very easy for us to recommend high-performance equipment of medium price (for example, a thousand euros), or to update an existing one.

In higher budgets, it is also postulated as an option due to its reliability, but where it can be invested more we prefer to opt for higher-end sources.

Finally, with respect to the available powers, the 650W version is perfectly capable of practically any equipment with a single graphics card (including overclocking), while the model we analyze here (750W) tries to make the jump to Multi-GPU configurations, although for those who do not plan it, their little sister seems more attractive to us.
