Rtx 2070 super vs rx 5700 xt: a high level showdown?

Table of contents:

Anonim

Continuing with the trend of new charts that are about to come out, we are going to make a comparison of the next potential step. Here we are going to see the fierce battle between RTX 2070 SUPER vs RX 5700 XT.

These charts raise the bar for the previous showdown (RTX 2060 SUPER vs. RX 5700) and fight to greater heights. The RX 5700 XT is the big sister to the AMD line, while the RTX 2070 SUPER is the middle sister to the SUPER family.

Although AMD is not yet fighting for the throne of this generation's champion, it is gradually escalating in power. Until a few years ago, the red team was only around the average ranges of graphics, but each time it is offering a fight to Nvidia in higher strata.

The question we still have to ask is: Has AMD been able to go one level higher and close the gap with Nvidia or is the competition still several floors above?

AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT

The graphic of the red team poses a new paradigm for the Texan company and seeks to confront the RTX 2070 SUPER itself. Their specifications, in fact, are quite similar, so it is not unreasonable to think that they could face equal conditions.

About the Radeon RX 5700 XT we have similar characteristics to its little sister. We see some differences, such as higher frequencies both base and boost, more computing cores and others, but in terms of base structure they are almost traced.

Both have 7nm transistors and an approximate number of 10.3 billion transistors. They feature 8GB GDDR6 dedicated video memory and a transfer rate of 14Gbps, at their best…

For more detailed data, here is a complete list of features:

  • Architecture: RDNA 1.0 PCB board: Navi 10 Base frequency: 1605 MHz Boost frequency: 1905 MHz Transistor count: 10.3 billion Transistor size: 7nm Memory speed (effective): 14 Gbps Memory size: 8 GB GDDR6 Memory interface: 256-bit Max memory bandwidth: 448 GB / s Power connectors: 1x8pin and 1 × 6 pin TDP: 225W Release date: 7/7/2019 Approximate price: € 450

AMD's bet is very daring, but it's backed by good-powered components. Although the simple numbers smile at the red team, we have to see how well it uses its resources and, most importantly, the results.

Nvidia RTX 2070 SUPER

Nvidia's mid-range graphics is the gateway to the green company's high-performance power.

While the RTX 2060 SUPER is good in power and well priced, the RTX 2080 SUPER offers great raw power directly .

This graphic is one of the best that Nvidia can offer us and allows us to play very demanding video games without too much difficulty. It is not as accessible as other graphics from the company, but it does not become an ultra top model as the RTX 2080 SUPER or RTX 2080 Ti could be.

It has characteristics very similar to the RX 5700 XT , but it differs in mounting CUDA cores, Tensor cores and other unique technologies of the company.

Here is a more detailed list of its characteristics:

  • Architecture: Turing PCB board: TU104 Base frequency: 1605 MHz Increase frequency: 1770 MHz Transistor count: 10.6 billion Transistor size: 12nm Memory speed (effective): 14 Gbps Memory size: 8 GB GDDR6 Memory interface: 256 -bit Max memory bandwidth: 448 GB / s Power connectors: 1x8pin and 1 × 6 pin TDP: 215W Release date: 7/9/2019 Approximate price: € 520

More than ever, Nvidia's graphics look roughly like AMD's graphics, but do they get the same performance or outperform them? Let's unravel this question and find out the answer.

RTX 2070 SUPER vs Radeon RX 5700 XT

If we consider only those sections where both graphs can be compared, the analyzes are, at best, inconclusive.

Both Nvidia and AMD share many numbers in different sections, but not only with each other, but also with their little sisters. For example, all four have 8GB of DDR6 VRAM, a 256-bit interface, and some 10.5 million transistors, among other things.

What we can highlight are, for example, the TDPs (Thermal Design Powers, in Spanish). Both are around 220W , so it's not uncommon for them to need two 1 × 8 and 1 × 6 pins to get power.

On the other hand, the base frequencies are peculiarly equivalent with 1605 MHz on average , but in terms of boost frequencies, the AMD achieves much higher values. When subjected to hard work, the RX 5700 XT raises its frequency up to 130 MHz above its competition, thus reaching 1905 MHz compared to the 1770 MHz of the competition.

Finally, we return to talk about transistors. Nvidia uses 12nm models under the Turing architecture , while AMD mounts more modern transistors of just 7nm. Although it sounds great, AMD it does not appear to take full advantage of the potential, as both graphs have a counter with a similar number of transistors.

According to the data, smaller transistors allow things like:

  • Package more transistors in the same space More power. Lower energy consumption.

However, almost all of these sections are not met, since the RX 5700 XT does not have more transistors, nor is it notably more powerful and, much less, uses less energy. To shed some light, we'll look at how these charts behave in synthetic tests and video games.

Synthetic Benchmarks: RTX 2070 SUPER vs Radeon RX 5700 XT

With the synthetic tests we have similar results to those obtained with the previous confrontation. In some the RX 5700 XT takes the lead, but in others the RTX 2070 SUPER regains ground.

The oscillation of points is quite irregular. Whereas in one test AMD gets more than 500 more points , in the next one it only gets 50 . However, in the Time Spy test the results change. The graphics of Nvidia gets the batteries and marks a score of 10113 , that is, 1000 points above that of AMD .

If we contrast it with RTX 2060 SUPER vs Radeon RX 5700, in both Fire Strike tests the RX 5700 obtained stable results of around 200 points above. On the other hand, the Nvidia was about 700 extra points in Time Spy , so the instability of these results seems very peculiar to us.

The differences between tests are mainly due to the way they perform the calculations. However, since each graph has its technologies, we cannot directly compare them. Also, just as it happened to us in the previous comparison, we do not have a clear result seeing these benchmarks, so we are going to look at the graphics from another perspective: the frames.

Gaming Benchmarks (fps): RTX 2070 SUPER vs Radeon RX 5700 XT

When we put the lens of video games we have much more interesting results. The data is still slightly patchy, but there is a clearer advantage.

We have to mention that the good results of the RX 5700 XT in Doom (2016) are due to the fact that the tests were carried out on Vulkan . With this configuration AMD graphics achieves better and more stable frame rates.

However, unlike her younger sisters, here we see a much more marked difference. In general, we see higher fps on the RTX 2070 SUPER, where there is a rate of between 5 and 15 extra frames, depending on the title.

The RTX 2070 SUPER takes advantage of the RX 5700 XT in most games, except for Doom (2016) due to the previously mentioned configuration. However, Nvidia's graphics has been able to come out on top when we hit 4K resolutions. There is another small exception in the Deus Ex at 1440p where the RX 5700 XT gets more fps, but in 4K we see how the metric is met again.

Energy consumption and temperatures

In terms of energy consumption, we can see results very similar to what we would expect from an AMD vs. Nvidia battle. However, here the RX 5700 XT considerably improves its consumption, positioning itself in the same place as its adversary.

The consumptions of both graphs are very even and it is quite remarkable that they are quite efficient in Stand By with only 58W. On the other hand, when you put it to workload, we see how both of them far exceed the TDP and reach numbers that are around 300W.

The loaded RTX 2070 SUPER spends an extra few watts on average. It is typical in the green team that has low consumption, but that, when muscle is required, start all the engines to the maximum. This is achieved, among other things, thanks to its superior cooling solution.

As we can see here, the Nvidia graphic achieves much better temperatures than those of its opponent. At rest we have an overwhelming -24ºC , while under load this advantage is reduced to -10ºC . This variation is very interesting, but we have to take into account that they are factory versions.

Although the temperatures are very different, as we see models from brands like ASUS, AORUS and others, we will see better cooling solutions. So it doesn't make much sense, right now, to put weight on temperatures. Furthermore, the 81ºC that the RX 5700 XT takes out are not, in any sense, too high temperatures, since the components can operate at high levels without problems.

Conclusion on the duel for the best GPU for 1440p

In this battle RTX 2070 SUPER vs RX 5700 XT we believe that the most appropriate answer is to say that the 2070 is superior to the 5700 . It gives us better results in frames, it has a good consumption and maintains good temperatures. In addition, it gives us the extra power of using RTX and DLSS , technologies that seem to emerge in the coming years.

We also have to point out that the Nvidia graphic will cost around € 70 more than AMD's, which is a determining factor. Is that extra cost deserved in exchange for the power it gives us? Our answer would be something more or less like this.

  • In 1080p this answer is clear. The RTX 2070 SUPER is directly better because the frames we get are much better. At 1440p the conclusion is more fuzzy because the frames we get are quite even. If you estimate Ray Tracing and DLSS , go for the RTX 2070 SUPER . If you prefer a cheaper but powerful graphics, go for the RX 5700 XT. In 4K, neither is basically recommended because they do not achieve good frame rates per second.

As you can see, the terrain of graphics is increasingly unrecognizable. For quite a few years now, Nvidia has totally dominated the market, but AMD is back to hand out candela.

Both charts seem very good to us and their prices are not bad at all. Of course, we hope that both will be devalued and we can obtain them for lower prices, as usual.

And you, what do you expect from these two graphs? How much would you pay for each of them? Comment us your answers in the comments box.
