Which is more recommendable of the two? There are several factors to determine it and not only the gross yield, but also the consumption and, above all, the price of both. Let's see it in this comparison.

RTX 2080 SUPER

The graphics card was released this July 23 as a more powerful variant than the original model. Nvidia managed to increase the amount of CUDA Cores to 3072 units, increase the GPU clock speed to 1815 MHz in Turbo and reach the speed of 15.5 Gbps for GDDR6 memory.

RX 5700 XT

This AMD graphics card was conceived to compete against the RTX 2070 SUPER, but as we will see later, it can still give the RTX 2080 SUPER some problems, especially due to the large price difference that exists between the two.

Testing methodology

For testing, an Intel team led by the Core i9-9900K processor was used. The comparison was made in 1080p, 1440p and 4K resolutions, in which both cards are fully competent with current games.

When we see the results in 1080p resolution, there is obviously an advantage in favor of the RTX 2080 SUPER, but the difference would not be so bulky in the case of the first three games, in fact, it loses in DOOM and in the Tomb Raider. However, in FFXV the difference is very important in your favor, just like in Deus Ex and Metro Exodus, you could say that there is a difference in these three games of 20-30%.

When we raise the resolution, we see that the RTX 2080 SUPER wins now if with a bigger difference, even in Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Far Cry 5. It continues to lose in DOOM against the AMD option.

In 4K resolution, it seems a continuation of the previous comparison. There would be a 10-20% performance difference here in favor of the Nvidia option. Even the SUPER variant manages to win in DOOM.

Although the tests in games are usually revealing, it does not hurt to see the numbers that both achieve in 3DMark.

Although the AMD 5700 XT requires less power at full load than the Nvidia option, it is much hotter. We are talking about a temperature difference of 14 degrees. We believe this is due to the benchmark cooling system, which consists of a single blower fan, versus the two fans of Nvidia's SUPER variant, which helps maintain more reasonable temperatures.

Conclusions

The RTX 2080 SUPER was expected to outperform the RX 5700 XT, and this difference is more consistent as resolution is raised. AMD's option surprises in some 1080p games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Far Cry 5 and DOOM.

Consumption is lower on the AMD option, but temperatures are much higher. Maybe we have to wait for the custom models of the manufacturers to solve this.

Although there is an appreciable performance difference, the price of both (800 euros vs. 480 euros at the time of writing these lines) do not go hand in hand with the performance offered, although it should be noted that AMD does not currently have Ray Tracing. We are talking about a difference of almost double the price that is not seen in performance.

Of course, whoever is only looking for gross performance no matter what the cost, the Nvidia option will offer it, even an RTX 2080 Ti.
