Samsung will manufacture hbm2 memory in 2016, nvidia breathes
The HBM memory has already come from the hand of the AMD Fiji GPU showing its novelties and its advantages over the already “obsolete” GDDR5, however it does not end there since next year we will see the second generation of stacked memory, the HBM2.
Currently only Hynix produces HBM memory and this gives preference to AMD over Nvidia (not surprisingly, the Reds have collaborated with Hynix to develop this technology), an advantage that Sunnyvale's will keep in 2016 with HBM2 memory over its green rival.
However, the good news for Nvidia arrives and it is that Samsung will also manufacture HBM2 memory in 2016 so it will facilitate Nvidia's access to this technology. South Koreans have seen a gold business supplying HBM2 memory to an Nvidia that takes up 80% of the market for dedicated GPUs and cannot miss the opportunity.
It is assumed that with HBM2 technology we will see graphics cards with massive amounts of video memory, up to 32 GB in the highest-end units and surely 16 GB in the rest. Undoubtedly a great leap in quantity compared to the current GDDR5 as well as a great advance in bandwidth that could exceed 1, 000 GB / s.
