Samsung has announced that it has started producing new 250GB SSDs with its sixth-generation V-NAND memory modules, offering a new optimized design with higher performance and lower levels of power consumption.

Samsung launches new V-NAND SSDs

While a 250GB SATA SSD isn't as impressive by today's standards, Samsung's sixth-generation V-NAND opens the door for future new Samsung SSDs with latencies of less than 450 microseconds and readings of less than 45 microseconds. This represents a 10% decrease in latency, resulting in increased responsiveness and performance. In addition, energy consumption is reduced by 15%.

With the company's new 136-layer V-NAND, Samsung offers 40% more cells than its previous 96-layer designs, resulting in higher storage capacities per unit area matrix.

When comparing 256 Gb chips, Samsung's new NAND requires far fewer channel holes than before, decreasing from 930 million to 670 million, thus reducing matrix size and manufacturing complexity. Samsung claims this allows for a 20% increase in manufacturing productivity. This increase in productivity per matrix will allow Samsung to reduce its production costs, which is great news for the company, given the decrease in NAND prices.

Later this year, Samsung plans to create larger 512Gb V-NAND TLC using its sixth-generation technology, which will enable the creation of larger SSDs and higher-performance solid-state storage devices.
