Nvidia's GeForce RTX 2080 Ti has been very limited since its launch, and highly sought-after models are sold out at most major retailers despite their high price. The PConline medium has obtained first-hand information that confirms the shortage of Turing chips by Nvidia.

In an interview with representatives from MSI, PConline was able to find out Turing chip supply issues, confirming that graphics card shipments are really tight. This is due to two main factors, the first of which is reporting performance issues with Nvidia's large GPU in TSMC's 12nm process.

As the chips get bigger, they are more likely to contain more manufacturing flaws, making the silicon unusable, or somehow suboptimal. If you start making bigger chips, suppose a chip twice as big and producing fewer chips per wafer, each critical failure leaves you with fewer functional chips. This is one of the reasons for the high price of the new graphics cards, much less functional chips are obtained per wafer than in previous generations.

MSI also confirmed that Nvidia's RTX series graphics cards are much more complex than their next-generation counterparts, as the GTX 1080 Ti has over 1, 600 parts, while an RTX 2080 has approximately 2, 400 and the RTX 2080 Ti has more than 2, 600 pieces. This increase in complexity makes Nvidia's RTX series graphics cards more difficult to produce, increasing the time it takes to manufacture each.

Nvidia is not supplying enough silicon to each partner to manufacture enough to meet retail demand, adding to this that each graphics card requires more manufacturing time, creating a long delay between the availability of silicon and shipments of the cards.
