Not everything we analyze is going to be Gaming or very high-end, it is time to present you one of the most interesting boxes on the market: Silverstone CS380, ideal for use as a storage box for its front bays. These will allow us to avoid having several teams at home and to focus everything on the same system.
We thank Silverstone for trusting the product for their analysis.
Technical characteristics Silverstone CS380
Unboxing and analysis
The Silverstone CS380 comes in a cardboard box with the usual dimensions for this type of product, the box is very well protected by several pieces of foam and a plastic cover to avoid any type of damage.
We open the box and we can see that the chassis is very well presented and protected by the two pieces of cork that are in charge of preventing its movement during transport. We also find a bag with all the screws and the different accessories necessary for mounting the equipment.
We find the following bundle:
- Silverstone CS380 case. Instruction manual or quick guide. Access key to hard drives. Screws and flanges.
We already look at the Silverstone CS380 itself and we see a chassis with a full size, it reaches dimensions of 230 × 464 × 525 mm (44.7 liters) and weighs more than 10 kilos, so it is a very robust unit.
The materials are made on the outside with top quality plastic and steel on the inside. This combination provides a high quality finish and that puts users who like a quality tower that breaks the new gaming stereotype.
Its front has a power button, but if we want to access the USB connections, LED indicators or have access to the hard drives we must have the lock unlocked.
Once we open it we find 8 bays for hard drives or SSDs in hot-swap that allows us to remove them hot and 2 bays of 5.25 ″ to expand with other accessories or a DVD burner.
On its side we find a protruding steel cover that allows it to have a greater capacity and, above all, better cooling thanks to its wide grille (it allows two fans to be installed on it, removing / introducing air).
While the right side protrudes with a bezel, to better organize all the wiring, that with so much hard disk we will not have much leeway.
View of the lower area of the box. Where we highlight the 4 large rubber feet and an air filter.
And finally we enter the rear area, where we find an upper air outlet for a rear fan, the hole for the plate of the motherboard, the expansion slots, rubber tube protectors for liquid cooling and the hole for the power supply. Nothing new, but it should be noted that it is not painted black… but it maintains its metallic appearance.
Interior and entering in more detail
The box allows us to install an ATX format motherboard inside, thus covering the needs of 99% of users in the market. Once we open it we can see two fans focusing their air flow directly to the hard disk booth.
The hollow of the power supply incorporates rubber stops to avoid vibrations and keep it as high as possible. Remember that this equipment is not focused on gaming and with a 500 or 600W power supply is more than enough for a workstation or server use.
Between the internal cables it incorporates the USB 3.0 connections, the connections of the control panel and for HD Audio.
Also very note that there is a 14.6 cm limitation to install a heatsink. Although any high performance heatsink will allow us to have a cool processor.
As for the general cooling of the equipment, we will not have any problems either, as standard it incorporates those two 120 mm fans in the bays of the hard drives, while in the rear area we have another 120 mm one that allows all the hot air to be expelled out.
Regarding storage, we find a total of 8 internal bays that allow us to connect 2.5 and 3.5-inch hard drives. To carry a highly efficient system, it incorporates a controller that must be powered by two MOLEX connections and connect the respective SATA or SAS cables (both are enabled) for each hard disk. The truth is that the system looks very good and we really liked its performance.
And finally, show you the previous area… where the organization of the wiring is quite improvable and saves the cover that allows us to guide everything decently. An aspect to improve for a 2016/2017 box, without a doubt
Assembly and experience
In this case we must bear in mind that the tower is more oriented towards high-performance services than gaming, but it can perfectly meet this objective.
WE RECOMMEND YOU SilverStone PF360-ARGB Review in Spanish (Full Review)Once we assembled a high-end computer, i7-6700k processor, Z170X motherboard, 16 GB of RAM, AMD RX 460 and a 1000W power supply. We have a pretty good setup.
We may have some other problem when installing graphics cards, since it allows a maximum length of 24.1 cm. Take it into account, because for example a GTX 1080 has 27 cm and will not be compatible, we must choose GTX 1070 Mini, RX 460 cards (as has been our case) or ITX variants.
The only downside we find is the organization of the wiring and that large sources can make it difficult for us to install . For the rest, we are very happy with its performance and sound.
Final words and conclusion about Silverstone CS380
The Silverstone CS380 is an ATX format box that supports microATX and ATX motherboards, 14.6 cm heatsinks and 24.1 cm graphics cards. One of its most identifying features compared to other boxes is that on its front we find 8 removable bays to connect 2.5 ″ or 3.5 ″ hard drives with SATA or SAS format.
We recommend reading our guide to the best heatsinks, liquid cooling and fans on the market.
In our tests we have seen that with efficient air cooling, which keeps the processor and graphics card in very good temperatures. Even playing very demanding titles he has made the cut. Although if it is true that your air circuit is upgradeable?
In short, the Silverstone CS380 is designed for those users who want to mount a high-performance computer, a workstation or a server and who play sporadically. Its store price ranges from 130 euros, cabinets with a similar design usually cost almost 80 to 100 euros more.
