Qualcomm and Microsoft announced the launch of the ARM-based Snapdragon 850 laptops and those 2-in-1 hybrid devices at Computex in June. Initial tests revealed that the devices are capable of providing better performance, especially when it comes to single core performance.

Snapdragon 850 will power those computers and ARM devices with Windows 10

Snapdragon 850 provides a performance increase of up to 25% compared to Snapdragon 835, and this is mainly due to the increase in clock speed. This seems like a 'decent' upgrade for a chip that's meant to run Windows 10 'smoothly', though not as significant of an increase.

The new Snapdragon 850 closely resembles the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, which powers many premium smartphones. The key difference is the higher clock speed that was achieved by introducing improvements in heat dissipation, therefore the new chipsets provide speeds of up to 2.95 GHz.

Performance comparison

A new Lenovo device with Snapdragon 850 detected on Geekbench, model Lenovo 81JL, scored 2, 263 points in the single-core test on Geekbench. Comparatively, the highest points that a Snapdragon 835 device was able to achieve were 1835 points with the ASUS NovaGo TP370QL.

However, the multicore results are not that different. The ASUS NovaGo TP370QL scored 6, 475 points, while the Lenovo 81JL scored 6, 947 points, indicating a performance increase of only 7.3% in this segment. If Qualcomm, Microsoft and Lenovo make further optimizations, the difference may widen in the future.
