In this article we are going to try to offer you the solutions to avoid the insufficient memory error in the Windows computer. Memory is an essential and critical part for the proper functioning of the system and we must have a quantity of it large enough to meet the needs of our system. If the system has shown you this error on several occasions, it is time for you to put measures into it, since the operation of this one must be greatly affected.

If Windows has shown you the insufficient memory error on your computer, it could be due to two important factors, either because you have little allocated virtual memory or because you have little RAM memory installed on your computer.

Types of memory in our equipment

The system uses two types of memories to manage the information transactions between the processor and the hard disk. This is RAM and Virtual memory

RAM

This is the physical memory of our equipment. It is installed directly on the motherboard and is made up of one or more chip modules. This memory is in charge of temporarily storing all the instructions and programs that are executed in our system so that the processor can quickly access them.

If you want to know in more detail what RAM is, visit our article that explains them in detail:

Virtual memory

The virtual memory of the system is useful if our computer has little RAM memory, for example 2 GB. What this memory does is allocate part of the storage of the hard disk so that the system can use it to put and remove items with which it is working dynamically. For example, when we access folders, applications, menus, etc.

Why the out of memory error appears on the computer

Windows 10 is a system that really manages the available memory in the system very well and it is an abnormal cause that this error appears. Although it is true that, as minimum requirements, Windows 10 asks for at least 2GB of RAM, it is capable of operating with just 1GB and with little virtual memory, although of course, we will be able to do practically nothing.

This error may be due to the fact that we have lost some RAM memory module due to a failure, that we have too little virtual memory due to having the hard disk too full or due to a virus that overloads the system resources.

Then we have the case of the other Windows operating systems. These have a worse optimization of resources and these errors are more likely to occur.

The first thing we will have to do to better identify our error is to open the Windows task manager and check the memory overload. To do this, we must press the key combination " Ctrl + Shift + Esc " and the task manager will open.

Then we must click on the " More details " option in the lower left corner and go to the " performance " tab. There we can see the consumption of system resources

If we are in Windows 10, it will not be common to see this error, since the system will kill all the processes that are necessary to free up space, even an application that we try to open.

Let's move on to see possible solutions for this error.

Solution 1: expand virtual system memory

The first option we have is to expand the virtual memory of the system. If we have little RAM memory this can save us temporarily. To do this we will do the following:

  • We go to the start menu and write " System ". We must choose the option marked in the image

  • In the window of system information that appears, click on the option " advanced system configuration "

  • Now in the " performance " section we choose " configuration "

  • In the new window we go to the " advanced options " tab and press the " change " button

This window is best recommended if it is configured so that the system automatically manages virtual memory, but if we deactivate this option, we can assign it to whatever we want.

  • We deactivate the top option and select the drive where the system is installed (C:) or other. Then we activate the option "custom size"

We must always put a value that is twice that of our physical memory. Although we should not place more than 4 GB (4096 MB) either, since this will be more than enough and we will not lose as much hard drive storage. At the maximum size we can place approximately twice the previous value.

Then click on " OK " and we will have to restart the computer

Method 2: Invite you in RAM

The previous method can save us for a while, but the computer will be considerably limited in terms of resources. If we are aware that our RAM memory is small (less than 4 GB), it would be advisable to acquire a new module to install it, this way the error will be corrected immediately.

We can also check if there are errors in your RAM memory. For this, what we have to do is press the key combination " Windows + R " to open the Run tool. Then write the following command:

MDSCHED

In the window that appears, choose " Restart now and check for problems"

Method 3: use software to scan for viruses

If our computer has enough RAM and also enough virtual memory, in no case should this error appear. If after checking through the task manager, we see that both elements are saturated, it is very possible that the cause of this is a virus in the system.

In this case, what we should do is use an antivirus to scan the system for malicious elements. We can use Windows Defender or another like Avast.

Method 4: free up space on your hard drive

If in addition to having little RAM memory, we also have little space on the hard disk, what we have to do is free up space on it. To do this visit the corresponding tutorial:

Method 5: Free up RAM in Windows

Manually, we can also free up space in our RAM memory through some fairly simple and quick procedures to do.

To do this follow our tutorials:
