The Sony Xperia XA is the Sony mobile phone that arrived in Spain in July along with the Xperia X, a more powerful and more expensive model. This mobile is striking for its premium design, which contrasts with the more modest specifications.
In a complete review, ProfesionalReview has prepared an analysis that evaluates all the functions and the technical specifications of the Xperia XA, such as battery, screen, design, camera and performance, which includes the Android Marshmallow, RAM, processor and internal storage. Sony Xperia XA Technical Features
Unboxing and design
Sony presents us with a very minimalist presentation in a compact, white cardboard box. On the cover we see the word “Xperia” and the logo below Sony typed.
While in the back area we have all the most important technical characteristics of the product: screen, resolution, processor, battery…
Once we open the box we find:

In times of increasingly large smartphones, it's good to see that Sony is also concerned with serving consumers who prefer compact mobiles. The Sony Xperia XA follows a design along the same lines as other Sony smartphones, such as the Xperia C5 Ultra Dual and Xperia X, which means that the design of the phone invests in straight lines, metal and glass.
The Sony Xperia XA is an attractive mobile phone, especially considering that we are talking about an intermediate model, a category that does not always go through the same care of high-end smartphones.
Available in gold, rose gold, gray and white, the phone has a metal-reminiscent back and a glass front with buttons on the right side. The finish is very sophisticated, leaving the Xperia XA with the face of a premium smartphone. The 2.5 D screen also deserves to be highlighted, for giving an elegant curvature at the edges of the front glass.
With 143.6 x 66.8 x 7.9 mm dimensions, the Xperia XA has a comfortable size to carry on a day-to-day basis, without making much of a bulge in the pocket or in the hand, even with the large screen (5 ″). This occurs thanks to its thickness and width, which are very effective. Still, the phone has a firm structure, that is, it seems to have good accident resistance. Ergonomics is quite pleasing: you can reach every corner of the screen without lengthening your finger.
Sadly, a fingerprint reader, an increasingly common component, is missing from its main competitor, the Moto G4 Plus.
5-inch screen with HD resolution
At 5 inches in size, the Xperia XA's screen bets on a few differences to conquer consumers, such as curved glass and the promise of "infinite display", which basically reduces the side edges of the screen to a minimum, allowing the screen occupy as much space as possible on the front of the smartphone.
If the appearance of the screen of the Xperia XA pleases and even innovates, it is with the specifications where the phone can lose some incentive. With HD resolution (1280 x 720 pixels), the smartphone offers 293 ppi pixel density. In other words, it is below the 300 ppi considered ideal so that the human eye cannot distinguish the light spots that form the images on the screen.
Despite this, the experience of using the screen of the Xperia XA does not disappoint. With strong brightness, even in sunlight, good contrast, and balanced saturation colors, everyday use is not compromised with screen resolution. You can watch videos on YouTube, open photos in the gallery, and play games without viewing pixelated images.
The final impression is that, for the common user and who does not abuse the most advanced functions of the device, the Xperia XA fulfills its role. However, for people who need to work with high-resolution photos and videos on mobile, such as designers, photographers, editors and architects, perhaps the best thing is to buy a higher resolution phone.
Performance with Android 6.0
Of all the specifications of mobile phones, performance may be the detail that best defines the category to which each model belongs. In the case of the Sony Xperia XA, it is possible to affirm that the smartphone is mid-range, as well as the Moto G 3, the Lenovo Vibe K5 and the Galaxy J7. It is placed between basic phones (Moto Y 2 and Galaxy Gran Prime Duos) and high-end phones (iPhone 6S, Galaxy S7 and others).
With Android 6.0.1 (Marshmallow) modified by Sony and 2.0 GHz octa-core MediaTek processor, the Xperia XA does not have many accidents in the execution of apps, nor when switching between programs. However, it is possible to notice some problems when opening many applications at the same time.
The impression is that the smartphone is at the limit of its capacity. It seems that a heavier system or with a little less RAM would be enough to make its performance a problematic issue.
This may have something to do with the amount of RAM (2 GB), which is not always enough to run Android Marshmallow on a modified device. The customization made by Sony ensures a more interesting and unique look, but also has an impact on system performance. It is up to the user to decide what is worth the most: performance or the most sophisticated interface.
Another detail that requires the attention of whoever can buy the Xperia XA is the 16 GB internal storage. Only 11 GB of that memory capacity is available for photos, videos, applications, and other files, as the other 5 GB is occupied by firmware and system files. The good news is that the memory expansion via SD card is satisfactory, supporting up to 200 GB.
In general, the hardware performance of the Sony Xperia XA is more pleasing mainly due to auxiliary features such as microSD input , 4G internet and SIM support. The question that remains, however, is whether the next Android updates will weigh more on the performance of the phone, considering that it now does not have outstanding performance.
Quality 13MP camera
The Xperia XA's front camera is excellent, resulting in photos with good sharpness and vivid colors. With 8-megapixel sensor, HDR function, wide-angle (88) for group photos, and auto focus, good-quality selfies can be taken even in low-light settings. People who use the front camera for Skype, FaceTime, Snapchat and apps of the type are probably not going to be disappointed with the result of the Xperia XA.
However, the main camera of the smartphone does not impress as much. The component features HDR, a 13-megapixel camera, and hybrid autofocus, which captures images in less than a second. With this, the camera of the Xperia XA complies in most of the times, with good speed of a click. Despite this, the colors are not always as realistic, and some images have busted dots, especially in bright environments.

In the official data sheet of the Sony Xperia XA, Sony reports that the battery can last up to two days. The calculation, according to the manufacturer, is based on a 2014 survey of typical smartphone use (such as the internet, calls, messages, social media, games, and music players).
However, during the Professional Review tests, the charge of the Xperia XA did not last more than a day of work, with the use of all these features and some more, such as video playback, streaming Apple Music and the camera. It is valid to highlight that we take into account the period from the beginning of the morning until the evening. This can be explained by the numbers. After all, the phone's battery capacity is only 2, 300 mAh.
This is a reasonable feature, but it can have a compromised duration depending on what the person wants to do with the phone. If there were an ideal smartphone for each type of consumer, the Xperia XA would be suitable for those who need a smartphone to use applications such as WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, calls, SMS, camera and other resources, but all in a moderate way.
Stamina mode gives way to Doze
Sony has done a good job of software in the transition for Android 6.0 Marshmallow, with well-developed applications. The interface is the same as that of the Xperia X, as well as the resources. It no longer has the famous Stamina mode, which reduced battery consumption by limiting mobile connections in the background; and an answering machine, which answers your calls and writes the conversations (making you save on the operator's voicemail service)… now all these functions are done by Doze and standard with Android 6.0.
Final words and conclusion about Sony Xperia XA
The Sony Xperia XA is a smartphone that comes to cover the mid-range of Sony. More than interesting specifications with a Mediatek processor, 2GB of memory and 16GB internal may be somewhat doubtful at the moment, but it counteracts it with two very good cameras and an excellent battery optimization.
So… is the Sony Xperia XA worth it? The final conclusion for the Xperia XA is positive: the mobile is good in most of the features. Despite this, it is not so good in the specifications and, mainly, with the result of the tests, which indicates that it is undoubtedly an intermediate phone. As for the price, when considering all the phones for sale currently, buying the Xperia XA may not be as advantageous. The Xperia XA can even be an interesting option, thinking about the balance between design and performance.

Compared to the competitor Moto G4 Plus, Sony delivers inferior screen, battery, camera and storage. Its price is 329 euros in online stores, we would have liked to find it for 200 euros…
