Threadripper 3990x, amd recommends using it with an intel linux so
Table of contents:
Every Linux user will know that the operating system comes in various flavors, with Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora among the best known. In recent years, we've seen many newcomers to the Linux scene, with Valve's SteamOS (a branch of Debian) being a prime example. Threadripper 3990X has been released recently and it is curious to think that AMD is recommending a Linux distro to sacrifice all the benefit, more if it is an Intel distro.
Threadripper 3990X, AMD recommends using it with an Intel Linux OS
More recently, Intel has launched its "Clear Linux" distribution, an open source project that aims to deliver tight performance for Intel-based systems along with security features suitable for cloud computing and more.
When AMD released its 64-core Ryzen Threadripper 3990X processor, the company recommended Intel's Clear Linux to those who wanted the best Linux performance, and Michael Larabel of Phoronix has put this claim to the test.
Although Clear Linux is designed for Intel processors, it has also proven to be a great choice for users of AMD's Ryzen and EPYC series processors, offering higher performance compared to other distributions, at least on average.
Full Phoronix Linux tests are available on their website, but we'll show the chart below that reveals that through 50 benchmarks that Clear Linux was able to win 48% of them, which is a huge win for the distribution Intel Linux. Please head over to Pheronix to see exactly where these wins went, which will help you see if Clear Linux will be able to benefit your Threadripper processor.
Strange to think that AMD is getting some of its best performance on Linux in an Intel-optimized distribution, yet if pure performance matters, mixing AMD hardware with Intel software seems like a good choice.
