Toshiba's transition to 64-layer NAND 3D flash memory continues today with the launch of the third generation of BGA SSDs, specifically the BG3 series.
Initially unveiled in 2015, Toshiba's range of BGA SSDs includes some entry-level models that are primarily geared towards equipment manufacturers, and what stands out most of them is their low power consumption and compactness, rather than performance.

Thus, the BG3 is the third SSD announced by the company with the new BiCS3 3D NAND 64-layer standard, after the XG5 NVMe SSD for the manufacturers market and the SATA TR200 SSD for retail sales.. So far, all Toshiba 3D NAND SSDs use the 3-bit TLC variant per cell.
Aside from the upgrade to the new generation of 3D NAND, very little has changed in the BG series compared to the previous generation. Therefore, the BG3 series continues to use the M.2 16x20mm standard with a PCIe 3 x2 link.
Like the previous generation, the BG3 is a DRAM-free SSD with support for the NVMe 1.2 memory buffering feature to minimize performance impact by not including a DRAM drive in the SSD itself.
The BG3 will be available in three different models ranging from 128GB to 512GB, but their designs have changed a bit, as the two smallest capacity models are 1.3mm thick instead of 1.4mm, while the 512GB is now 1.5mm thick compared to 1.65mm from the previous generation.
Among other things, the BG3 will achieve sequential read speeds of 1520 MB / s and write speeds of 840 MB / s, with a maximum power consumption of 3.2W and 2.7W.
Toshiba has not yet disclosed the exact price of the new SSD, but the company said it is similar to SATA drives. In addition, the new model is currently being shipped to equipment manufacturers and will be on display at the Flash Memory Summit event next week.
