With the Toshiba Canvio Basics 4TB, the Japanese company renews an external hard drive model that it has been launching year after year. Each time with a small adjustment or new feature to replace that of the previous model. This Basics model is characterized by being a mechanical hard drive, having a size of 2.5 inches and a minimalist design with simple and straightforward operation. This version of 2018 comes with USB 3.0 but without any additional software or protection, and with the plug and play, connect and use function. We analyze this small model with great capacity to see how it works with our PC.
We thank Toshiba for the transfer of their product to make the review.
Technical characteristics
Unboxing
The Toshiba Canvio Basics 4TB comes in a small box slightly larger than its own size, which stands out for its pistachio green color and on the sides of which a few characteristics are reported. The hard drive is well protected by a bubble bag to avoid damage during transport. The total content included in the box is:
- Toshiba Canvio Basics 4TB. 50 cm micro ba USB connection cable. Information and technical support sheet.
Design
We find in this Toshiba Canvio Basics 4TB a simple and classic design with a rectangular shape and straight lines except in the corners, where it curves. The manufacturing material is rigid plastic with a matt black color and a soft touch. The design is robust and there is no creaking of the plastic or flimsy areas. Its measurements are 7.8 x 10.9 x 1.95 centimeters and a weight of 218 grams.
The upper part has a led indicator in one corner to show the power on of the device. On the opposite corner is the company name in silk-screen printing. Moving on to the side edges, only the top have a micro b connection port.
The sides are curved to the bottom, where we only find a sticker with the different details of the model and nomenclatures of its certificates, approvals and recycling mode. This base of the hard disk does not have any type of non-slip paws or anything like that, something that always comes in handy to avoid disappointment.
The connection cable between the Toshiba Canvio Basics 4TB and the PC is a standard type and unfortunately it has the usual length of 50 cm, which can sometimes be short.
The Toshiba Canvio Basics 4TB does not have much data on its hardware, the only thing clear apart from its compatibility with the USB 3.0 standard, is its maximum rotation speed around 5400 rpm. Investigating it can be assumed that it mounts four dishes of 1TB each and that it possibly has a small cache of 16 MB.
Test and performance equipment
We tested the Toshiba Canvio Basics 4TB on the GIGABYTE B85-HD motherboard a few years back to check its performance on a not-exactly-TOP motherboard. The disk comes formatted in NTFS and works without problems in Windows system and Mac OS. In the latter it is necessary to perform a reformat for its use.
We have used both the Crystal Disk Mark program to perform the synthetic benchmark, and the transfer of a 2GB file from an SSD.
The read and write performance given by the synthetic test shows that the values remain within the expectations of this type of disc, there is no surprising improvement or substantial reduction. If we compare it with other mechanical hard drives of previous models or competitors, the difference is not very great either.
It took 20 seconds for a 2GB file to copy to the Toshiba Canvio Basics 4TB, a pretty good time. It may surprise that performance on a 4TB disk but not so much if we know that in reality it is that as if they were 4 disks of 1TB joined, it is in any case fulfills its mission perfectly.
Final words and conclusion
At this point where solid disks are increasingly eating the ground for mechanics, Toshiba launches with its Toshiba Canvio Basics 4TB model, a disk that goes where SSDs have not yet reached due to its enormous amount of gigabytes. A virtue that serves to alleviate the absence of other types of functions and support software, the weak point of this album.
We recommend the best external hard drives
However, it is necessary to recognize that despite Toshiba not showing a great evolution or revolution in this model, it does maintain what many users are looking for: simplicity and comfort to use and transport.
All of the above, together with a rather attractive price of just € 104.99, makes it not uncommon for it to sell quite well. It is not the best hard drive, but it is one of the best value for money for users.
