However, this news is particularly interesting for business-class solutions. Today's high-end enterprise-class 3.5-inch hard drives can store up to 12TB of data unless the performance-reducing SMR technology as mentioned above is used.

These 12TB hard drives are based on 8-platter configurations with 1.5TB capacity each. With the arrival of the 9th generation PMR drives in 2018, hard drive manufacturers will be able to increase capacities to 14TB with 8 platters while designs with 7 platters can go up to 12TB.
