Twitter suspended more than 600 thousand suspicious accounts
Table of contents:
In recent years, the world has been suffering different attacks, especially in the Middle East and Europe, which has set off alarms for the main governments and organizations. The Internet is known to be one of the most widely used communication sources to perpetrate and instigate this type of attack. Twitter is aware of this problem and since 2015 it has been closing more than 600 thousand accounts that promoted terrorism.
Last year alone, 376, 000 Twitter accounts were suspended
During the last year alone, Twitter loaded more than 376, 000 user accounts that had to do with terrorism, directly or indirectly. The most common are those accounts that promote and encourage this type of attack, many of them end up being denounced by the users themselves.
Of the 376, 000 suspended in 2016, 74% were made during the second half, which means that Twitter has intensified the blocks against this type of account, which in almost all cases is anonymous.
Twitter states that: “There is no magic algorithm to identify terrorist background content on the Internet. But we continue to use technological instruments to integrate user signals. In the last six months, these instruments have allowed us to automatically identify more than a third of the accounts that we suspended for the promotion of terrorism . ”
This means that Twitter does not have tools to identify user accounts that promote these acts (which we do not understand), because they do not have personnel to control them. Most of the suspended accounts are thanks to the community's own complaints.
Twitter has begun to be aggressive about terrorism, after a study by George Washington University identified it in 2015 as one of the IS's favorite communications channels.
