Ubuntu gnome will be the standard distribution of the operating system

A lot is happening in the Ubuntu world these days after the founder of Canonical announced that the Unity 8 user interface would no longer be developed.

Unity 8 was Canonical's latest vision for Ubuntu's future, along with convergence. It was supposed to give Ubuntu the ability to act the same way on both mobile and PC, something that no other GNU / Linux distribution can do, at least not yet.

Unity 8 development was completely frozen

However, it turned out that the development process was slowed down by several factors, including the fact that the Ubuntu community was not very interested in the modern design of Unity 8 in the standard version, although it looked better on mobiles.

Put simply, Mark Shuttleworth's decision was to drop support for the Unity interface entirely as the default desktop environment for Ubuntu. But the most surprising thing is that Unity 8 development was completely frozen, and as of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, the default desktop will be GNOME.

Many of you already knew this, but what you probably didn't know is that Mark Shuttleworth decided to make Ubuntu GNOME the default distribution, which answers the big question that many asked themselves lately: “What would happen to the Ubuntu GNOME distribution now that Ubuntu does it adopt the default GNOME desktop? ”

The Unity 7 interface can be installed from the Ubuntu repositories

As for the Unity 7 interface, the founder of Canonical announced that all Unity 7 packages can be installed from the repositories, although for this you will have to install them manually using a tool like Synaptic Package Manager.

In this way, you will be able to enjoy the Unity 7 user interface even in the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS version, scheduled to launch in April of next year.

But the best news is that Unity 7 will be maintained thanks to a small team from Canonical, although it is not known if new functions will be added in the long term, but most certainly not.
