After being in development for quite a long time, the Ubuntu Snappy Core 16 operating system is finally available in its first Beta version. Ubuntu Snappy Core 16 is a reduced version of Ubuntu designed especially for mini-PC platforms such as Raspberry Pi or DragonBoard, although it is also possible to use it on 32-bit and 64-bit computers.
Ubuntu Snappy Core 16, Beta version is available
The current version of Snappy Ubuntu Core is 15.04, as far as we know, it is based on Ubuntu 15.04 (Vervet Vivid), which reached the end of its cycle in June 2015, Canonical was unable to upgrade to Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf), which had also reached the end of its cycle in December.

So the only smart decision for Canonical was to release a new stable version of Ubuntu Snappy Core based on the current LTS (Long Term Support) branch, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus). The first Beta images are currently available for PC (64-bit and 32-bit), Raspberry Pi 2, Raspberry Pi 3, and DragonBoard 410C.
