Although the big stars of the Intel event was the Intel Core series, another important announcement for workstations cannot be overlooked. It is the Intel Xeon W-3175X, destined to conquer the segment of ambitious and professional users.
Intel Xeon W-3175X is designed for workstations
These unlocked microprocessors, similar (but not the same) to the ones we saw at Computex in June, have 28 cores, 56 threads, and base frequencies of 3.1 GHz, although they can reach 4.3 GHz.
These chips support 68 PCIe 3.0 tracks (44 on the CPU, 24 on the chipset), and there is another important feature when it comes to memory, with support for 6-channel DDR4. This allows the user to configure these systems with up to 512 GB at 2666 MHz (ECC and standard). The TDP of this processor is 255 W and is based on Intel's Skylake-X architecture.
Will require new motherboards
This CPU uses socket LGA3647 (Socket P), so it will be necessary to use new motherboards. ASUS and Gigabyte have confirmed that they will launch products for this processor; The first will launch the ASUS ROG Dominus Extreme, which includes not one but two 24-pin ATX power connectors, plus the 21V 4x 8-pin and 2x 6-pin ATX power connectors. That motherboard provides 12 DDR4 slots for a maximum of 192 GB of RAM.
Intel has confirmed that these processors will be available in December, although we do not yet know their price. It will be interesting to compare them to AMD's new Threadripper chips, which, by the way, has announced a promising Dynamic Local Mode to improve gaming performance.
