Xiaomi Mi 8 SE is a mid-range smartphone that has reached the market to offer its users benefits that are closer to high-end models, all while maintaining a price that is really adjusted for what it offers.

Has Xiaomi managed to reach its goal? Will it arrive in Spain? We will discover it in our complete analysis in Spanish.

As is already common in the reviews of the smartphones we tested, it has not been assigned by any store or the manufacturer. But it has been purchased for analysis. Wanting? Let's start!

Xiaomi Mi 8 SE technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

The Xiaomi Mi 8 SE bets on the typical presentation of the brand, with a cardboard box inside which the terminal is perfectly accommodated and protected to avoid any type of damage during its journey to the hands of the end user. When opening the box we find the following bundle:

  • Xiaomi Mi 8 SE Type-C MicroUSB Charging Cable Power Adapter Audio-to-MicroUSB Type-C Jack Adapter Clear Gel Case SIM Slot Extractor Quick Guide and Warranty

This Xiaomi Mi 8 SE has a design traced to that of the Mi 8, because we can consider it as a cut version of this in order to offer a much lower sale price. The terminal has lines very similar to those of the Apple models, it even implements the notch like its older brother and in which the sensors and the front camera are placed.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 SE is manufactured with a unibody metal body, although it is finished in glass at the back. Its measurements are 154.9 x 74.8 x 7.6 mm with a weight of only 175 grams.

At the back we find the double rear camera in an upright position just in the upper left corner, with the LED flash in between. Beneath is the fingerprint sensor, a typical location on the Chinese brand.

At the top is the noise canceling microphone, while on the left edge is the slot for two nanoSIM cards. The right edge houses the volume buttons at the top and the on / off button just below. All buttons have a firm and firm touch, denoting their great manufacturing quality.

At the bottom edge are the call microphone, the microUSB type-C connector and the multimedia speaker.

Among the great absentees of this Xiaomi Mi 8 SE are the microSD card compartment, the 3.5mm audio jack connector and the infrared sensor. It is curious that these elements are included in low-end terminals and increasingly less in the mid-range, something that should make brands rethink their elimination.

AMOLED display

As for the screen, the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE mounts the same 5.88-inch panel as its older brother. It is an AMOLED type panel with a resolution of 2280 x 1080 pixels that occupies 88.5% of the front, achieving excellent use of this area.

This panel offers us a density of 402 pixels per inch, more than enough to achieve a sensational image quality. The rest of the panel features include 24-bit color depth , 60000: 1 contrast ratio, and support for the HDR10 standard. The use of AMOLED technology allows to achieve great energy efficiency, something that should help stretch your autonomy over an IPS panel.

Pointer hardware at a good price

We now focus on the interior of the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE. The processor chosen on this occasion has been the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710, a last-batch model that has only been on the market for a short time. This processor is manufactured in 14nm FinFET so its energy efficiency is excellent.

With AnTuTu we have obtained 168, 732 points. Very far from the 261775 points of the PocoPhone F1, but it is that the phone is as fluid and at no time does it lock. No need to worry, we have a phone for a while.

Its configuration consists of eight Kryo 360 cores capable of reaching a speed of 2.2 GHz, it also has the Adreno 616 graphics, the DSP Hexagon 685 and the ISP Spectra 250. This processor is capable of handling dual 20 MP cameras or a single camera 32 MP, in addition to being able to record video at 4K and 30 FPS without messing up.

Of course this processor will allow us to move all the applications in the Google Play Store without problems, including the most demanding games. Accompanying the processor we find 6 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 64 GB internal storage.

MIUI 10 operating system

Regarding the operating system, it comes with MIUI 10 based on Android Oreo. As usual in the latest versions of MIUI, we will not have an application drawer, since we will have the application icons spread across the main screen or grouped in folders.

This operating system is very well optimized and works perfectly without jerks. A problem that MIUI has been dragging for a long time, is that the notch influences the display of pending notifications, which makes them not visible to the naked eye and we have to slide our finger if we want to see them. On both sides of the notch are the time, battery, and data and Wi-Fi signal level.

Of course, it offers us the option to configure the operating system to use it with the digital buttons or through gestures, add a floating ball to show the notifications, choose the display of the notification bar, have a second desktop space, clone applications and one-handed mode.

Xiaomi Mi 8 SE will not have a GLOBAL version.

The big problem with this version is that the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE is not in its global version and we have to unlock the Chinese version to install a custom ROM like Xiaomi. As you well know, this ROM is the closest thing to the official ROM, but translated into Spanish with Google Play. Its updates are somewhat more tedious, which we must do manually, but it is a good solution for a TOP terminal.

High quality cameras

At the rear of the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE is the dual rear camera, with a 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 Exmor RS sensor.

This sensor features an f / 1.8 aperture and a 1.4 micron pixel size with autofocus, optical zoom, digital zoom, and image stabilizer. The secondary sensor is a 12 MP Samsung S5K3M3 with 2.4 focal aperture and 1 micron pixel size. The Xiaomi Mi 8 SE is capable of recording videos at 1080p and 4K but only at 30 fps, nothing at 60 fps

The front camera for selfies has a 20 megapixel sensor with 2.0 focal aperture and a pixel size of 1.8 microns.

Battery and connectivity

Xiaomi Mi 8 SE has a 3400 mAh battery, a fairly high capacity that promises great autonomy along with the high energy efficiency of its AMOLED screen. This battery has Quick Charge 4+ fast charge that works wonderfully, managing to charge the half of the terminal in just over half an hour. A full charge takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Autonomy in my daily use? Well, we give it a remarkable. 5 and a half hours on average is not bad, since my use is quite intensive. If you play with Pokemon Go it lowers the battery a lot more, but this happens in all terminals.

Finally, among the connectivity options we find Bluetooth 5.0 LE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a, b, g, n, ac, Wi-FI Direct, Wi-Fi Display, MIMO 2 × 2, NFC, GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS and Beidou. It lacks having an FM radio.

Final words and conclusion about Xiaomi Mi 8 SE

Xiaomi continues to do a good job with the launch of its mid-range and high-end terminals. Without a doubt, the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE offers great features: 5.88-inch screen with AMOLED panel, 6 GB of RAM memory (our model), 64 GB internal memory, build quality, battery with 3120 mAh autonomy and a high quality dual 12 MP rear camera.

We have the MIUI 10 operating system in Chinese (non-global version). To be able to put it in Spanish we must unlock the terminal and install a custom ROM, the most common, Xiaomi.EU. Honestly, it's going very well, but being aware of doing the updates manually puts something back.

We recommend you read the best high-end smartphones

The level of the cameras is quite good both rear and front. We believe that for the price it has, it meets more than enough, although it has nothing to envy its older brother Xiaomi Mi 8.

Currently it is difficult to buy in Spain. We can only export it from China for a price between 250 to 300 euros depending on model and color. We think it is a good price, but with the PocoPhone F1 on the market it does not seem like such an interesting option.
