The Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro was announced just two weeks ago globally and we already have it for our lands. Of course Xiaomi is one of the most productive companies in recent years. Although they may have something dizzy to the consumer, it can not be said that they do not give them options. This new model maintains the same policy of always launching good terminals at adjusted prices.

In this specific case, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro stands out for its dual rear and front cameras, something that had already been seen in other companies but not in Xiaomi, and which are accompanied by the help of the AI in the photographs. As if that were not enough, it includes 4000 mAh of battery within a fairly continuous but not bulky design. Along the way the microUSB type C and the NFC are lost.

As always, thank the guys at InfoFreak for the trust placed in Professional review by giving us this product for analysis.

Technical Features Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 PRO

Unboxing

Xiaomi returns to the old ways with the design of its Redmi series, so it is not uncommon to find its typical completely dark orange box where the only thing that contrasts is the name of the model in white. Once the lid is open, the entire interior is purely white, or that is what that color represents, although then the technology is not so pure. Leaving aside the philosophical airs, inside the box we will find:

  • Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro. Type B microUSB charging cable. Power adapter. Gel case. SIM tray extractor. Quick guide.

Design

At first glance: 2.5D curved edge screen finished in a case made of aluminum alloy and with rounded lines. It is almost the same as we can find in the latest models of the company, as I mentioned in the introduction. And why does the company keep repeating design? Because it works. The softness and coldness of the aluminum together with that design of curved lines feels great in the hand, it feels like an elegant and premium product even if they are more appearances than anything else. In our case, we have the black model as a sample, but it is also possible to get it in blue, gold, pink and red. A variety to satisfy almost everyone. Aluminum offers other advantages such as avoiding the trace of the footprints, better dissipating heat or better withstanding a fall .

The 6.26-inch screen and its useful area of 82% are the characteristics that determine the final size of this Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro, whose measurements are 76.3 x 157.9 x 8.2 mm and a weight of 176 grams. These dimensions, somewhat excessive, are not so much if we consider how well contained that large screen remains. The terminal fits well in one hand, although afterwards for its handling we have to pull almost always both hands. The risk of falling without a cover is little, since the aluminum is not very slippery, but when putting the included cover, the risk of slipping decreases much more.

On the other hand, the 176 grams are slightly noticeable, but after a while of use that feeling disappears. The extra weight is surely due to the increased battery life.

On the front of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro it stands out for the decrease in the edges and especially the notch on the top where the double front camera, the speaker for calls, the notification led and the proximity sensor and light are housed.. This notch is especially long, since putting it is better a smaller one, this time the double front camera may be to blame. The bottom edge, as usual, is free of any components.

The back does not have much change compared to other Xiaomi models, since it maintains the fingerprint sensor in the upper central part and the double camera vertically in the upper left corner, with the double led flash between both sensors. The double chamber has a 1-millimeter flange that makes the terminal not rest completely flat on smooth surfaces, which implies.

On the sides we find the 3.5mm audio jack next to the noise canceling microphone and the infrared sensor on the upper edge. The tray for two nanoSIM cards or a nanoSIM and a microSD on the left side. The right edge houses the volume and on / off buttons in the arrangement of the first one above and the second one just below. Finally, at the bottom edge is the microphone for calls, the microUSB type B port and the speaker for multimedia content.

screen

For the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro, the IPS LCD technology with a FullHD + resolution of 1080 x 2246 pixels is maintained, which, being embedded in the 6.26 inches of the screen, results in a density of 398 pixels per inch. This IPS shows quite good colors, although they cannot compete with the saturation of AMOLED screens. With the contrast that has a ratio of 1500: 1, you can comment something similar. The level of blacks that the screen shows is correct, sometimes appreciating a very dark gray instead of a good black.

The viewing angles have a good range and no tint of color is seen when rotating the screen. An improvement is shown in the maximum brightness that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro can give. Peaks of up to 600 nits are achieved, enough to enjoy the screen in sunny moments.

In the settings we find the usual options to be able to modify the warmth of the colors, the contrast or the tonality. The reading mode is also common to find it already in many models.

Sound

The sound given by the lower speaker of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro has a fairly high sound power with the maximum volume and even in that way no distortion or canning is appreciated. However, there is a low bass that makes the sound sound somewhat flat.

With headphones, the sound is also noticeable and with a good loudness, however if you are not entirely satisfied with the default equalization, you can manually equalize in the settings. For brand headphones there are some preset equalizations.

OS

The latest Xiaomi mid-range models continue to share the same version of Android, in this case the 8.1 Oreo. The ideal would be to integrate the ninth version, but you know that this is too beautiful. Fortunately, almost all Xiaomi models coincide in the update via OTA to MIUI 10, the latest version of the company's customization layer.

MIUI 10 offers quite noticeable changes in terms of its visual style and animations, taking the design to a minimalist and simple level as Google did a few years ago on Android itself. This redesign bets on blue and white colors along with rounded corner windows.

Inside, emphasis has been placed on optimizing the system, making it lighter and more fluid on almost all the brand's models. In our test Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro with only 3 GB of RAM, the system works stably. When it comes to fluency, it generally works well, only in some cases have we seen windows or actions that take a few more seconds. In some applications of the system the performance suffers, it is the case of the camera app when we want to record a video, there is a quite noticeable delay from when the button is pressed until the recording starts, and it is something that can frustrate a little bit.

Another negative aspect in my opinion, already seen in terminals of other brands with notch, is the absence of notification icons in the top bar. The notch only allows to show the time, coverage, Wi-Fi signal and battery level; So if we want to see which applications have generated notifications, we must necessarily slide down the list of notifications. It is an essential feature for many and it is still pending in many models that use notch.

performance

We are not surprised to find a SoC already common in the mid-range models of the company and also present in this Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro. We speak, of course, of the Snapdragon 636 with eight Kryo 260 cores at 1.80 GHz that seems to be performing so well in this type of terminals. The SoC is completed with the Adreno 509 GPU, just to play most games but without reaching a high or stable framerate or requiring the highest graphic adjustment. With our model of 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, AnTuTu gave an average score of 114760. However, it can be expected that the 4 GB / 64 GB model, having obviously that extra gigabyte of RAM, will achieve better performance, not only in games but also in the operating system, where its absence is most noticeable.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro does not have facial recognition, however, its fingerprint sensor responds effectively although it is not one of the fastest either.

Camera

This time a 12-megapixel ISOCELL type Samsung S5K2L7 sensor with 1.9 focal length, a 1.4 micron pixel size, is mounted for the main rear camera. The secondary, a Samsung S5K5E8, has for its part 5 megapixels, an aperture of 2.0 and a pixel size of 1, 120 microns. This second camera is clearly focused on improving the Bokeh effect in portrait mode. On the other hand, among the characteristics of these cameras we find its AI, autofocus, dual pixel, burst shooting, digital zoom and face detection. AI is a feature that has been improved with respect to scene detection, however, despite the good implementation of scene recognition, adjusting the values for each specific scene is far from remarkable. We have not been able to appreciate a substantial difference from normal photos.

In daytime scenes we have seen how the quality of the snapshots is quite good. You can see a fairly good level of detail in the foreground, but without ever being sublime, something similar can be said about the colors shown, realistic and faithful, without tonal aberrations. In these types of scenes there is no high grain and the contrast maintains the shapes. Dynamic range is not its best feature, so pulling the HDR is necessary to improve the shot. We've found that Auto HDR mode also does a good job in most situations without creating too much overexposure.

Indoors, the level of detail declines greatly and the focus takes longer. The colors are more subdued and washed, and the same defect suffers from the contrast.

On the other hand, at nightfall or in dark situations, the camera captures good lighting but is affected by some of the interior problems. The noise increases and although some detail is maintained, it is lower than that of day captures. Something similar occurs with colors, which obviously lose intensity. In general, the result is slightly better than expected in a terminal of this category.

Portrait mode works quite well on this Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro, and just like with AI scene detection, this Bokeh mode has been perfected and that did not work too badly either. In this model, cropping of the focused object is done quite precisely with respect to the background. If true, the blur in the background is more accentuated than in other cameras.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro records by default at a maximum of 1080p at 30 fps, although it manages to record at a higher number of fps for slow motion mode. In principle, there is no option to record at a higher resolution such as 4K, however, by downloading an external recording program if it is possible to activate this resolution with a framerate of 30 fps.

1080p recordings have a fairly good quality by capturing a lot of detail and true colors. Contrast and image definition scratch to a good level and even good digital stabilization has been achieved.

The dual front camera stands out in this Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro. The main one has a 20 megapixel Samsung S5K3T1 sensor with a focal length of 2.0 and a pixel size of 0.9 microns. The secondary camera supports portrait mode and is therefore only a 2 megapixel Omnivision OV02A10.

The main camera despite having so many megapixels, is not entirely convincing. It does a pretty decent job and the photos have the right colors and contrast but far from what I expected. On several occasions the snapshots have appeared overexposed or underexposed. However, when the capture is correct, a high level of detail is appreciated.

In the case of portrait mode, it also doesn't end up being as perfect as its rear sisters and the edges don't finish being as well polished when the blur is done.

The camera interface maintains the same simple aesthetic with which we can alternate modes by sliding to the sides: Short video, Video, Photo, portrait, Square, panoramic and Manual. At the top we will have some shortcuts such as flash, HDR, AI, filters and advanced settings. In general, the interface does its job, but the delay from when the record button is pressed until it is activated is noticeable. We do not know yet if it is a matter of performance or optimization, but we will let you know if we have any news.

Battery

Whenever a battery with above average capacity is included, it is to be praised. On this occasion, without hardly changing the measurements, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro includes a 4000 mAh battery. In theory enough to offer good autonomy. In our tests, the autonomy after making normal use of the terminal was 1.5 days with between 5 and 6 hours of screen. An autonomy that is not entirely bad but from which an even better optimization could be expected.

Available in this model is Quick Charge 4, which manages to charge half of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro in just over half an hour and the full charge in one hour and twenty.

Connectivity

In this section the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro shares a feature with many of its brothers: Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a / ac / b / n / 5GHz, Wi-Fi Display, A-GPS, Beidou, GLONASS, GPS, Radio FM, infrared control and VoLTE.

Conclusion and final words of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro

Xiaomi continues to launch terminals with a very varied range and characteristics, some tend to stand out in something in particular and many do not stand out in anything, but of course, they almost always offer a solid product for what they cost.

This Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro although it is true, that it does not stand out or has revolutionized anything, it has a set of features quite good for its price.

In summary, it offers a continuous but effective design, a more than decent screen, powerful sound, an average battery and a well-mounted and optimized rear camera.

In contrast, the performance falls within the minimum required today to move around the system and run current applications, but not for much more. It is true that the model with more RAM will surely help in the final fluidity of the terminal. What can not be forgiven is the absence of NFC, so useful lately and it is also not understood that around 2019, smartphone with microUSB type B will still go on sale.

Finally, two aspects that the brand highlighted, such as the AI for the camera and the dual front camera, do not provide as much as expected of them and remain a little in borage water.

In conclusion, for its price around € 180 for the 3GB / 32GB model and € 213 for the 4GB / 64GB model, we can speak of a very good global terminal for the price it has but without being perfect.
