We've been waiting for B550 motherboards for quite some time, and now it seems that AMD is ready to offer a lower-middle-range-oriented chipset with the B550A.

B550A is basically an upgrade to AMD 400 series motherboards

As discovered by Computerbase.de , Robert Hallock, one of AMD's top vendors, made a statement on AMD's reddit about the existence of the B550A chipset, which is apparently different from the rumored B550 chipset.

In a post about a user viewing a pre-assembled system using an ASRock B550 motherboard, Hallock commented to correct the user that the OEM system uses a B550A motherboard and not a "standard" B550 motherboard.

This means that the B550A is basically an upgrade to the AMD 400 series motherboards that can be found on some pre-assembled PCs. Hallock also responded when a user asked why AMD would create a B550A chipset (implying that the name was confusing).

Basically, the B550A exists because there is a special demand for it from OEMs, but not ordinary consumers. For example, maybe AMD doesn't think an older hardware upgrade would appeal to enthusiasts, but it could be good for OEMs because OEMs want cheaper hardware. Consumers who buy pre-made PCs may not care about the chipset, or may not even know what a chipset is.

It's also notable that AMD Marketing did its best to correct a Reddit entry that didn't get much attention. This could be an indication that the B550 motherboards are coming and that they will not be a mere update to the 400 series of chipsets. We will keep you informed.
