The GeForce GTX 1070 Ti has been the latest launch of Nvidia within the graphics card market, a proposal that comes to stand up to the Radeon RX Vega 54 and not miss any sale. Asus GTX 1070 Ti STRIX is one of the best models in Nvidia's new offering with the best quality custom PCB and a heatsink to match to get the most out of Pascal architecture.

Prepared? Let's start with the analysis!

We thank Asus for trusting the product for its analysis:

Asus GTX 1070 Ti STRIX technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

Asus GTX 1070 Ti STRIX comes with a luxury presentation, which is so characteristic of all high-end graphics cards from this manufacturer. The card is presented in a cardboard box with the corporate colors of the Asus ROG series and with all its most important characteristics and specifications detailed on the back in perfect Spanish so that no user misses anything.

We open the box and find the Asus GTX 1070 Ti STRIX along with all its accessories, all very well arranged in foam pieces to avoid damage, the card comes in an anti-static bag as usual.

The bundle includes the following components:

  • Asus GeForce GTX 1070 Ti STRIX Instruction Manual Two Velcro Strips

We look at the Asus GTX 1070 Ti STRIX and realize that it follows the usual aesthetic of all brand cards within the STRIX series and with the DirectCU III heatsink. It is a large heatsink on which a black cover is placed and a total of three 92 mm fans, which are responsible for generating the air flow necessary for its operation thanks to Wing-blade technology and its certificate to IP5X dust resistance. As we will see later, the card includes the Asus Aura Sync lighting system to offer a spectacular aesthetic.

This heatsink occupies three expansion slots and has been designed to be as quiet as possible, which is why it includes 0 dB technology that keeps the fans off until the temperature reaches a threshold of 60 ºC. If you do not like this feature you can always modify its shutdown through its software (that is, the fans are always turning) and in this way its temperatures will be much lower when idle.

Finally we look at the Pascal GP104 graphics core that gives life to this card, this GPU contains a total of 19 active SMXs which in turn contain a total of 2, 432 CUDA Cores along with 64 ROPs and 152 TMUs that in this case work at one 1607 MHz base frequency that goes up to 1683 under turbo and beyond. The GPU is accompanied by 8 GB of GDDR5 memory with a 256-bit interface, an effective speed of 8000 MHz and a final bandwidth of 256 GB / s. All this with a TDP of 180W.

At the back we see a backplate that cannot be missing from a card in its range, it is a piece of aluminum that protects the components on the back of the PCB and improves aesthetics. LED lighting has also been added to the left side of the Asus logo in red.

And this is what the Asus GTX 1070 Ti STRIX looks like in our test bench with active lighting:

In this back of the card we can see two hybrid connectors for 4-pin fans, in this way the connected fans can take as reference both the temperatures of the processor and the graphics card, acting as required by the conditions of the component that warms up the most. Undoubtedly, an option to have an efficient system and without having to be constantly attentive to it.

The card has a single 8- pin PCI Express connector capable of providing up to 150W of electrical power in addition to the 75W provided by the PCI Express slot.

As for the video outputs, the Asus GTX 1070 Ti STRIX features a DVI connection, two DisplayPort ports along with two HDMI ports.

PCB and internal components

It is time to remove the heatsink to see what is hidden underneath, for this we just have to remove the screws from the back.

First of all we see that the Asus DirectCU III heatsink that incorporates a huge aluminum fin radiator that is crossed by a total of 6 copper heatpipes of the best quality, these have the function of absorbing the heat generated by the core and distribute it throughout the radiator for disposal. Asus indicates that it has 40% more area to refrigerate than in previous versions. Going back to the heatpipes, they come into direct contact with the GPU chip for better heat transfer.

Once the heatsink is removed, we reveal a small metal plate that is placed on top of the PCB (MaxContact Technology) that serves to improve the cooling of major components, such as the GDDR5 memory chips.

Asus has placed thermal pads on all of these components to maximize heat transfer. Asus GTX 1070 Ti STRIX has a high quality VRM with a total of 7 power phases, a number that is more than enough to guarantee a good overclock. In addition, this system has Super Alloy Power 2 technology that includes the best quality components to improve efficiency and durability.

For benchmarks we will use the following titles:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike normal.3DMark Fire Strike 4K version.Time Spy.Heaven Superposition.VRMARK.

All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, the second resolution is making the leap to 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers and the most enthusiastic with 4K (3840 x 2160). The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website.

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:

FRAMES BY SECONDS

Frames for Seconds. (FPS)

Gameplay

Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 ~ 40 FPS Playable
40 ~ 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Synthetic benchmarks

This time, we've narrowed it down to three tests as we consider them to be more than enough as synthetic performance tests.

Game Testing

We have decided to make the leap to checking various games manually. The reason? Very simple, we want to give a much more realistic vision and cover tests with current games. Since we make an effort, it is consistent with the level of the website and that of our readers.

Software and overclock

Note: Remember that overclocking or manipulation carries a risk, we and any manufacturer are not responsible for improper use, use the head and always do so at your own risk.

We recommend that you install the Asus Tweak application, although if you want more exhaustive control with graphs and live metrics, better Afterburner or EVGA Precision. Although Asus Tweak allows us to apply advanced overclock without much difficulty and control the auxiliary fans connected to the graphics card.

We have increased the overclocking capacity to 1767 MHz in the core, leaving a maximum of 2038GHz and the memories in 2002 MHz. The upload is not very drastic but we scratch some FPS that in 4K UHD resolution is always appreciated.

Temperature and consumption

The temperatures of the Asus GTX 1070 Ti STRIX have been quite remarkable. At rest we have obtained 36ºC since the fans are stopped until the GPU load and reach a temperature of 60ºC. While playing we do not exceed 63 ºC, a figure out of the reach of the Nvidia GTX 1070 Ti Founders Edition that reached up to 81ºC. When we overclock the differences are minimal, nor is it that we can squeeze much to this series of graphics cards.

Consumption is for the entire team *

While in total consumption we obtain a total of 61 W at rest and 256 W playing with an Intel i7-8700K processor. When we overclock it goes up to 63W and 289W respectively. Regarding the Founders Edition version, the differences in maximum load are somewhat significant while at rest it consumes less.

Final words and conclusion about Asus GTX 1070 Ti STRIX

The Asus GTX 1070 Ti Strix becomes the great gaming alternative for this Christmas and 2018. It has an impressive design, high-quality components and a cooling of 10. What more can we ask for?

Its performance is excellent in Full HD and 2K resolutions. But in 4K it falls a bit short and we should opt for the current flagship of Nvidia: GTX 1080 Ti that we have already analyzed on several occasions on our website.

We recommend reading: best graphics cards on the market.

Is the GTX 1070 Ti worth buying? If you have a GTX 1060 or earlier generation, we recommend changing. But in the case that you have a GTX 1070 or GTX 1080 obviously not. Except that you want to have a little more guarantee, if this is your case, the best thing you can do is wait for Volta, who must land by the middle of next year.

Its store price is approximately 535 euros and is currently in immediate stock. It seems to us a super recommended purchase and with the money you save compared to the GTX 1080 you can upgrade your processor to an i7 with the multiplier unlocked. What do you think of the Asus GTX 1070 Ti STRIX?
