We have the Be Quiet chassis with us ! Silent Base 801, the one with the highest performance in the Silent Base range of the German brand. A medium tower format chassis, but with measures that exceed 50 cm to allow the installation of all kinds of hardware and liquid cooling up to 420 mm. This range has 1cm soundproofing panels on all sides and 3 pre-installed 140mm fans. Without a doubt one of the best chassis in relation to quality / price that we can find on the market.
Before starting this review, we must thank Be Quiet! Your trust in us when you give us the product to do this review.
Be Quiet! Silent Base 801 technical characteristics
Unboxing
We will start as always with the Unboxing of this professional Be Quiet chassis ! Silent Base 801. The product is placed in a huge neutral cardboard box that far exceeds the size of our presentation desk. In fact, the total measurements of this packaging are 651 x 323 x 615 mm and it has a weight of about 13.72 Kg.
On the outside of this box we only see a silkscreen of the chassis mounted with its legs and its make and model. Inside, we will find as always the product wrapped in a transparent plastic bag with two protections of polystyrene cork on the sides.
The main chassis accessories come in an elongated cardboard box located in the main chassis compartment. The truth is that they are enough elements, so make sure that the bundle is complete:
- Torre Be Quiet! Silent Base 801 Two disassembled legs (glued to the protective cork) Assembly instructions manual 4 bags of screws 3 boxes for hard disks with 4 anti-vibration caps in each Velcro straps to route cables
All this is what we should have, look at the side of one of the protection corks because this is where the chassis legs are located. Keep in mind that we have not managed to mount them to make the taking of photos and review more agile.
Something that is also a brand of the house is having 3 extra beans to install hard drives, along with very useful anti-vibration rubbers for mechanical drives.
Exterior design
The next task is to make a detailed description of the outward appearance of Be Quiet! Silent Base 801. This brand undoubtedly knows how to do things, we always have towers of exquisite quality in their manufacture and with carefully studied details to provide just what enthusiastic users in professional assemblies are looking for.
Perhaps at first glance it does not seem a chassis as striking as those of other brands. We have sober minimalist lines and no RGB lighting anywhere, something that distinguishes this Silent Base line that seeks something different, but with an elegance worthy of a high-end in a PC tower of about 120 to 140 euros.
Precisely these characteristics are those of having a c hasis built in steel of a forceful thickness and rigidity that you notice as soon as you open it and start working on it. In addition to a soundproofing system on 3 of the 6 external faces of the chassis, tempered glass and ABS plastic in the front area. The measurements that we have without legs installed is 552.7 mm high, 539 mm deep and 245.4 mm wide, in addition to a weight of 11.43 Kg when empty.
There are two versions of the Be Quiet! Silent Base 801, the one we analyzed has a 4mm thick tempered glass panel mounted on the left side, and the other version changes this glass for a sheet steel panel with soundproof coating.
The side itself is nothing special, this glass has a metal frame installed to catch it to the rest of the chassis and an opaque finish around it to make part of the area invisible and improve its aesthetics. We really liked its finish, simple and elegant, and it also has the original grip system using blades operated by a button on the back.
Just under the glass we can see the two holes that are responsible for installing the legs in the side area.
The front area of Be Quiet! Silent Base 801 will seem extremely simple to you, but keep a few secrets under that central panel made of ABS plastic. In addition to it, on both sides we have a decorative border of the secondary color with a metal grid at the bottom that functions as air extraction or suction.
But if we take this central part and pull it upwards, we will be able to extract it completely, exposing a 1 cm soundproofing panel installed on it. Likewise, installed on the chassis and perfectly removable, we will have a perfectly fitted particle filter of a very high quality. In this case the fans will be installed in the inner area of the chassis, of which we have two Be Quiet! Pure Wings 2 140 mm pre-installed, although there is still one more.
The right side only has a black steel plate installed with the same installation and removal system as the left side. Similarly, the brand has installed a soundproofing panel in the interior area, also 1cm thick. Just behind there is a hole for cable management about 30 mm thick.
The I / O panel of this Be Quiet chassis ! Silent Base 801 is located at the top and the truth is that it is quite complete, although we miss a USB Type-C port. In any case, we have:
- 2 USB 3.1 Gen1 1 USB 2.0 3.5 jack for audio and separate mic Power button RESET button next to HDD activity LED Four-position button for fan speed control
This button will be connected to a pre-installed microcontroller that we will see later. In any case, it is also a hallmark of the brand.
Something to keep in mind is that this upper area cannot be removed quickly, since it is anchored with screws to the chassis, and it also has a soundproofing panel inside. The holes for air suction or extraction are located on the two lateral rails and in the form of gills at the rear. And in this case they don't have a dust filter.
The back area of Be Quiet! Silent Base 801 can be divided into four parts. In the upper area and attached to the edge, we have a ventilation hole without filter and the two buttons that we will have to operate to disengage the side panels.
We should just find the hole for the I / O panel of the motherboard, next to a hole that has a 140 mm fan pre-installed, great detail this. We continue to the slot area, with a total of 7 slots with removable perforated plates. It is not all, because the possibility of installing vertical graphics cards has also been enabled thanks to two other grids, leaving space for a thickness of 2.5 slots.
Finally, in the lower area we have the hole to enter the power supply with an independent compartment for it. In this case, we have an independent backplate that we must remove to put the PSU, after this we will screw it back together with the source so that it is perfectly fixed.
We finish with this large lower area in which a particle filter has been installed , just like the one in the front, which occupies the entire enormous ventilation gap of the box. We can easily remove it if we pull it back.
In this chassis, the legs do not separate the floor too much from the lower air intake, we speak of only 15.4 mm precisely for this reason, we have decided to save the installation of them, but every user who buys this box, must install them evidently.
Interior and assembly
We have already discussed in detail absolutely all the elements of the outdoor area and its curiosities, so now it's time to open the sides and see what we find. The assembly that we have carried out consists of:
- AMD Ryzen 2700X with Stock heatsink Asus X470 Crosshair VII HeroAMD Radeon Vega 5616 GB DDR4PSU Corsair AX860i
We can see how well the interior of this chassis is, in fact, Be Quiet! It has always been characterized precisely by offering maximum quality and detail in everything it does. This spacious games room is 323.5 mm high, 483.4 mm wide, because even in details of performance this brand is accurate. And there is no shortage of protection in the cable holes in the form of rubbers in the secondary color that gives it even more personality.
This zone will be able to support motherboards in ITX, Micro-ATX, ATX and E-ATX formats, the breadth of the zone gives us that and even more. We must say that an important characteristic of the sheet that supports the board is that it is modular, and we can completely remove it to use it as a test bench, or rotate it and change the orientation of the board.
The space for hardware will allow us to install CPU heatsinks with a maximum height of 185 mm, graphics cards of 449 mm maximum length with HDD beans and 287 mm with them installed. Finally, the PSU slot supports lengths up to 288mm with the included HDD cabinet.
The PSU hole occupies the entire lower area, obviously made of metal, but not all complete. If we look at it in more detail, on this upper area we will see a total of four plastic plates placed under pressure on it. And if we want an extra fan, and even install a 140mm fan over the area, we will only have to remove them, because the entire compartment is hollow and allows the passage of air.
If we continue to the right, a total of five holes have been installed protected with ABS plastic panels. As you can imagine, these holes are intended to house the three hard drive bays that we have seen included in the bundle.
Storage space
Coinciding with the previous one, we will see in more detail how many and where we can install the hard drives in Be Quiet! Silent Base 801.
We have already commented that this chassis has an entire front area in the main area that is capable of holding up to 5 hard drive beans, of which the manufacturer includes three of them in the purchase bundle. We can buy the missing ones independently. But there is also space to install many more hard drives, especially 2.5 fleas, so let's see them little by little with the help of images.
Of course, 3 of these units may be installed in the removable bays, both 2.5 "and 3.5". If we go to the rear area, we will find a metal cabinet also with anti-vibration rubbers that supports another 2 units of 2.5 "or 3.5".
If we continue exploring in the rear area, we will see that just on the installation plate of the base plate there are 3 other spaces available, in this case only for 2.5-inch units. And if we finally go back to the beginning, to the main area where we previously removed the plastic plates from the PSU, we can see how there are up to 3 slots with four screws each to install more 2.5-inch units on it.
In summary, at the factory, we will have capacity for a total of 5 3.5-inch hard drives or a total of 11 2.5-inch hard drives. Of these 11, 6 slots are exclusively for 2.5 ”drives and 5 are hybrid. Not bad, right? In fact, the theoretical full capacity would be 7 units of 3.5 "or 15 units of 2.5".
Cooling capacity
After the large storage capacity, we need to see if Be Quiet! Silent Base 801 is just as good in its ability to install fans and radiators. We already anticipate that this is the case.
Before looking at the total capacity, it is worth noting that in this chassis we can also install a fan on top of the PSU box, right where the holes for the SSD are, there is also compatibility for fans. You know the rest of the places and they are:
- Front: 3x 120/140 mm Top: 3x 120/140 mm Rear: 1x 120/140 mm On the PSU cover: 1x 120/140 mm
Simply a wonder, the breadth of measurements and the optimization of space will allow us to install a total of 8 fans of 140 or 120 mm. In fact, this chassis has three 140mm fans pre - installed at the factory.
These fans are the Be Quiet! Pure Wings 2, offering speed control through PWM, up to 1000 RPM generating a maximum noise of 18.8 dB. The maximum air flow of each is 104 m 3 / h and with a proven useful life of more than 80, 000 hours.
Let's see now the benefits in terms of liquid cooling installation and radiators:
- Front: 120/140/240/360/420 mm Upper: 120/240/360 mm Rear: 120/140 mm
Undoubtedly another marvel, the possibility of installing top-of-the-range radiators of 420 mm in the front and 360 mm in the upper area gives us the possibility of mounting custom systems or even dual configurations for CPU + GPU.
Regarding liquid cooling, something that we must take into account is that the holes available in both the front and top areas will not allow us to install thick profile radiators with 40 mm, very fashionable now for extreme cooling systems. In any case, for 20mm radiators + fans we will not have any problem. In addition, the free space in the beans area allows us to install tanks + pump for custom systems without problems.
Something that is always worth studying is the air flow that we can generate and in which direction. From the factory, we have a transversal flow, in which two fans are in charge of drawing air through the front and one rear is in charge of taking out most of it. In this front area we can also improve the air intake by removing or opening the central part, we should not worry about dust because the filter is high performance.
Something very good in this chassis is that even having a PSU cover, it will give us an acceptable inlet air flow through the lower area, being able to naturally exit through the upper area. To generate a good flow, we will need to place at least one fan on the PSU, and another two in the upper area, since the exhaust grilles are not too large.
Last but not least is the fact of having a microcontroller from the factory capable of managing the PWM signal from up to 6 fans installed in the chassis. Using the I / O panel button we can select up to four different positions, auto, and three low, medium and high speed positions.
In this case, software management will not be possible, something that in a chassis of this caliber would have been very positive.
Installation and assembly
We have already seen what it is capable of, now it is time to see if the assembly we have made is up to the task in Be Quiet! Silent Base 801.
Due to the good thickness of approximately 3 cm at the back, we will not have problems pulling a large number of cables to the board and storage. But we do not have any complex routing system that is capable of storing cables inside it, that is why, we will need some of the velcros included in the bundle to leave everything perfectly accommodated. It is precisely something that this chassis lacks and that would come in handy.
At least we do have large protected side holes to pass cables and also a huge hole in the upper area, where to put the EPS cables. Let us remember once again that we can rotate the plate to change its orientation.
Something interesting, and that you may have noticed, is that we have a series of screws and rubber protections in the peripheral area. The goal is to eliminate vibrations from hard drives and fans so that they are not transmitted to the side panels. Up to this point Be Quiet !, great work in detail.
The truth is that there is not much more to comment on the assembly, we have previously seen many of these details in each element. Something also to value is that we will not need to carry an order of installation as in other chassis, the versatility and the large gap, allows us to insert and remove cables without any problem if we make a mistake.
Final score
Very elegant and professional assembly that gives us this Be Quiet chassis ! Silent Base 801. We are so used to seeing settings full of lighting that it almost seems strange to us that we don't have in this case. We can always independently buy fans or LED strips to install, although it would surely be a good idea for the manufacturer to add one more variant to the Silent Base range with some lighting.
Final words and conclusion about Be Quiet! Silent Base 801
Be Quiet! Silent Base 801 has left us with such good feelings that it will long deserve a very good score. It is certainly not a purely high-end chassis, since the brand has others with superior features, but the care they have in their creations, the small details and also the high quality of construction make them rank very high on the table.
In terms of design, the Silent Base range stands out in sober, simple, but also elegant lines, moving away from those extremely striking chassis that almost everyone likes. Details such as the side panel mounting system, the modularity of the interior, and the versatility to install all kinds of hardware is one of its qualities. The three main panels have anti-noise plates, making it an ultra-quiet chassis.
We also recommend our guide on the best chassis on the market
In fact, the huge capacity for storage and cooling stands out a lot. Up to 11 units of 2.5 "or 5 units of 3.5" allows us from the factory, and radiators of up to 420 mm in the front area and 360 in the upper area. In addition, it has 3 high-performance 140mm fans with integrated speed control.
The size and weight of the chassis denote great capacity, but one aspect that can still be improved is the cable management at the rear. We don't have a fairly advanced system for storing cables and that would be something that would round it off. Similarly, a version with lighting somewhere could also be a claim for users.
Finally, this Be Quiet chassis ! Silent Base 801 was released a long time ago at a price of 149.90 euros, but currently we can find it for very competitive prices of between 120 and 130 euros. For our part, it combines quality and price in a great way, so it is highly recommended for users who pay attention to the small details.
