We have with us the Chuwi Hi9 Air Tablet a device of excellent quality / price and very similar to the Hi9 Plus. It is a Tablet with 4G LTE connectivity as one of its main strengths, along with a 10.1-inch 2K screen, Deca-core processors and a battery of no less than 8000 mAh. Attentive, because if you are looking for something cheap and powerful, this Chuwi is one of the best options.
We appreciate Chuwi's trust in us when transferring the product to us for analysis.
Chuwi Hi9 Air technical characteristics
Unboxing and design
The Chuwi Hi9 Air follows the trend of other products of the brand with an extremely minimalist presentation and a box very adjusted to the size of the product. This box is made of thin and flexible cardboard in a neutral color and only with the Chuwi brand logo on the front.
Of course, the interior is completely occupied by a high-density polyethylene foam mold where the Tablet is placed, as if it were an envelope. In turn, it is stored in a thin antistatic bag next to the typical screen protector. An interesting detail is that the screen already has a protector pre-installed.
The bundle in this case is very simple, since we will only have the charger and MicroUSB cable along with a small box with instructions and warranty. In this case we do not have an extra keyboard or case.
Chuwi Hi9 Air is a tablet aesthetically very similar to the Plus version, in fact, we will refer to it a lot throughout the review, and thus buy appearance and benefits. A tablet with its own performance of the mid-range, but with a high quality black aluminum finish. The semi-rough touch that aluminum gives it makes this a very slippery, portable and safe tablet in our hands. Again the screen frames are quite extensive on all four sides and we will not be certified by the manufacturer of Gorilla Glass.
The complete measurements of the Chuwi Hi9 Air are 241.7 mm wide, 172 mm high and 7.9 mm thick. Remember that in this model we have a 10.1-inch screen instead of 10.8, which reduces the overall measurements. The step however increases to 550 grams, mainly due to the inclusion of a battery of no less than 8000 mAh.
We really liked the excellent portability and thinness of this Tablet, as well as the finishes with shiny aluminum bezels on the edges. Thanks to the excellent connectivity and the capacity for a dual SIM card, it could be one of the cheapest and quality options for business trips where we do not need too powerful equipment.
In the rear area we only find the aluminum housing, the camera in the upper area next to the LED flash and an elongated plastic area that has surprise inside.
We are going to start the study of the external connectivity and access buttons of Chuwi Hi9 Air from the upper area because it is the most interesting. In this area, we will find a 3.5 mm Jack connector for audio and microphone, and also the power and data connector, which in this case is a MicroUSB. This last aspect is important, because the Hi9 Plus version had USB Type-C and in this case it has been suppressed by this outdated MicroUSB. We believe that it is not a wise choice for current tablet and smartphone connectivity.
In this upper part we also have two speakers at both ends, which in this case we do see a better one than the Hi9 Plus model. This situation allows us to support the Chuwi Hi9 Air on any surface without covering the audio outputs.
In the other areas, we will only have interesting elements on the right side, since there are the on and off buttons, and the volume increase and decrease buttons.
You might think that the small hole just next to the volume button is used to remove a tray to insert the SIM or memory card, but it is not. The function of this hole is to restart or reset the Tablet, something quite special.
Connectivity and card slots
We will take advantage of this last paragraph to enter in more detail the connection and expansion possibilities of this Chuwi Hi9 Air, which are not few.
We said that the upper plastic area that surrounded the rear camera had surprise, and that is that inside are the expansion slots of the Tablet. The way to remove this plastic is as simple as putting the small cardboard that comes in the purchase bundle or our nail and carefully pulling.
Inside we can see two slots to install up to two full-size SIM cards and a microSD card with up to 128 GB of storage. Without a doubt, a very successful option of the brand in maintaining 4G LTE Cat.6 connectivity in the Tablet, which provides a download of up to 300 Mbps.
And that's not all, because now it's time to talk about Wi-Fi connectivity. In this case, we will have the same adapter as the Hi9 Plus model, that is, Wi-Fi dual band IEEE 802.11 a / ac / b / g / n up to 433 Mbps and Bluetooth 4.2. Again, Chuwi has not implemented NFC connectivity on this Tablet, although we do have GPS, AGPS and GLONASS as the main satellite navigation systems, which is not bad at all.
2K Sharp screen
In addition to the excellent connectivity, Chuwi Hi9 Air is a Tablet that stands out without a doubt for its excellent image quality both in resolution and brightness and color. A 10.1-inch Sharp brand IPS panel has been installed (although in practice they are 9.43 inches) that will provide us with a resolution of 2K (2560x1600p). This achieves a pixel density of no less than 320 dpi, which is almost the density of the best mobile phones on the market.
This screen also has a maximum brightness of 400 nits (cd / m 2) to generate an image quality that really falls outside the range to which it belongs. The panel of course supports 10 touch access points and has viewing angles of 178 degrees as it should be on an IPS panel. We have not noticed bleeding in our unit either, if even at maximum brightness.
Compared again to the Hi9 Plus, we have a somewhat smaller diagonal and higher pixel density. Nor do we have available the touch pen that it included, although the truth is that we do not see it as an inconvenience, because the truth is that it had enough LAG. The only weakness that this panel has, will be the impact on autonomy, due to its resolution and maximum brightness capacity.
Cameras
Another differentiating element of this Chuwi Hi9 Air is undoubtedly the section of image and video capture and the truth is that it is much better compared to previous models.
Starting from the back, we will find a sensor signed by Samsung with 13 Megapixels with an included LED flash. It is not a bad resolution to be a Tablet, although the truth is that we did not reach the level of photography of mid-range Smartphone. The ability to take photos in difficult conditions is limited as we must understand, although with decent lighting, we will obtain a good quality in the photos, as we can see in the following images. This rear camera will be able to record content in 4K @ 30 FPS, which is not bad.
At the front we also have another 5-megapixel sensor from Samsung that is ideal for making video calls and video chats in high quality. The benefits are acceptable, although obviously with the same problems in difficult conditions. In addition, it will be able to record videos in Full HD 1920x1080p.
Regarding the software of the cameras, it has not suffered too many variations from previous models, it still has enough options, and it was a good color rendering for the photographs. We will be able to take ultra panoramic photos with a 180 degree sweep and select generic options such as white balance, noise reduction, timer and resolution.
Hardware and performance
We have already seen enough technical aspects of the Chuwi Hi9 Air, although we still have to see its processing and memory hardware in more detail. And we will start with its CPU, which, in this case, is the same SoC as the Chuwi Hi9 Plus although a lower specification. It is therefore a 64-bit MediaTek MT6797X Helio X20 processor with a 10-core count. There will be two Cortex-A72 cores at 2.3 GHz, four Cortex A53 cores at 1.85 GHz and another four Cortex A53 at 1.4 GHz.
The detail to highlight is that the frequency of the X20 is lower than that available in the Plus version, the X27 in this case, lowering a few MHz in all its cores, and that, in fact, affects performance and fluidity a bit.
The graphics system that is included is Mali T880 quad-core 780 MHz that in our time of use has given the size with solvency to move the graphics of most games available on Android, for example, Asphalt 9 Legends.
And to finish the main hardware section we will find a 4 GB RAM memory along with a 64 GB storage capacity. We will only have this configuration available, but we think that it is more than enough for the daily tasks that can be performed on a Tablet. In fact, this configuration is the same as the Hi9 Plus. Remember that storage can be extended up to 128 GB using MicroSD.
In tests with Antutu Benchmark v7.1.9. We have obtained a total of 104, 100 points, which effectively exceeds 100K as promised by the brand of your device. This is only 4, 000 points less than the plus version, so it is not bad when you consider that the CPU frequency is a little lower.
8000 mAh battery
And without a doubt the last aspect to highlight of this Chuwi Hi9 Air Tablet is the great capacity of its battery. We rose to a capacity of 8, 000 mAh, which is no less than 1, 000 mAh more than the Plus model. The brand promises in its specifications that it will hold a maximum of 72 hours and 5.5 hours of intensive use at maximum brightness.
In the days that we have been with it, and extrapolating the consumption data of a few hours with normal use, browsing and talking and the brightness at 40%, the maximum autonomy obtained is about 14h of screen use. Some really spectacular figures when we do not demand too much from the hardware, for example, playing and with brightness over 80%. In this case we do have 5 and 6 hours of use.
User experience and operating system
This Chuwi Hi9 Air has been in our hands long enough to forge a real idea of the user experience. The first thing we find is an Android 8.0.0 Oreo operating system, which is obviously not the newest and is the last update via FOTA available, so we do not have Android 9.0. We really think that the brand should launch the new version of Android for this type of device with such remarkable hardware.
Another very important aspect is that Chuwi has not used any customization layer for this operating system, so we will not have strange applications or anything like that, which is greatly appreciated. The system in general is quite fluid, although if we notice some drops in performance when we load the device from many applications or open numerous tabs in the Chrome browser. It is nothing serious, since the stability of the system and the device are more than proven, without fatal crashes or blocked applications, at least during the time that we have been using it.
The sound quality is generally good, with a high volume and quite clear. The change in the audio output system has suited the device quite well, and we see it as something very positive when it comes to watching movies or series on our favorite platform. Of course, we have thrown the odd game to games like normalitos like Pokemon Go and something more demanding like Asphalt 9 Legends and we have not had performance problems, so it is a very enjoyable Tablet for the smallest of the house.
Final words and conclusion about Chuwi Hi9 Air
Well, we come to the end of this in-depth analysis of the Chuwi Hi9 Air Tablet to tell our final assessments about the device. Starting with the exterior design, it is a high quality device, with aluminum finishes and very compact measurements and only 7.9 mm thick.
The choice of hardware is quite accurate, with a 10-core CPU and 4 GB of RAM that are enough for an average user who is not going to use this tablet for purely gaming purposes. 64 GB of storage is also a good number and with good possibilities of expansion through MicroSD. Yes, it is true that a removable tray system for the grooves would have been safer and more current than having to remove part of the rear area.
We recommend our guide to the best tables on the market
Among its strong points we highlight its great connectivity, with capacity for 4G LTE and Dual SIM, its 10.1-inch screen and 2K resolution of excellent quality and above all its great autonomy with the 8, 000 mAh battery, exceeding 14 hours of screen with 40% brightness. The image quality of the 13MB Samsung rear camera is also quite good for a tablet, performing well in normal light conditions, although somewhat worse in darker areas. Furthermore, it is capable of recording in 4K.
Another aspect to value is the great stability of the operating system and hardware as a whole, with a good fluidity when we do not demand too much and, above all, for providing us with a totally clean Android system without the ability to personalize it.
Chuwi Hi9 Air we will find it in the market for a price of between 190 and 230 euros depending on the chosen store. The truth is that it is a very good price, but for a similar cost we have the Hi9 Plus version with keyboard and pencil, yes, with less autonomy.
