Unboxing and design

The laptop arrives very well protected with a double box, the first is quite neutral and we have not released any photographs. But the main one we see an image of the product, in the purest and Apple Macbook style.

When we look at the back area we see all the technical characteristics of the product but in Chinese… We begin to unpack.

Once we open and extract all the accessories we find the following bundle:

Portable Xiaomi Air 12 gamer. Power charger with its Type-C fixed cable. A power adapter for Europe.

The Xiaomi Air 12 is a very compact model and is that its dimensions of 292 x 202 x 12.9 mm and its weight of 1.07 KG are a real blast. Its design reminds us a lot of that of a 12-inch Apple Macbook.

It has a 12.5 inches and a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The display is made from a 16: 9 IPS panel but is glossy, rather than matte. This can be a problem sometimes, because you reflect on it… but it just can't be perfect either. The calibration of the same is very good, but if you have a calibrator at hand, we recommend that you tune them according to your needs.

Both the front and rear areas are completely smooth, little can we talk about them.

On the left side we find a 3.5 mm minijack output and an HDMI connection to connect an external monitor. To those who program, I highly recommend its use, because sometimes 12 inches for several hours can be annoying.

While the right side we have a USB 3.0 connection. Type-C to charge the laptop and connect any devices with the same interface and a classic USB 3.0 connection. Can there be few USB connections? If we are charging the laptop, without a doubt… but you can always buy an adapter to multiply its outputs (sometimes they are not cheap).

Now we look at the keyboard and we are in front of a high quality GUM unit and that its touch is super pleasant both to the touch and the route.

It is also backlit in white, which can be disabled by shortcuts from the keyboard itself.

About the Touchpad, everything has been heard by users who have bought it (and those who have not) and the reality is that it lives up to the high-end ones. Smooth and precise… although I still have to find a way to scroll with it.

The speakers are located at the back of the laptop and it is signed by the AKG company and they have Dolby Audio PREMIUM support. Our tests and experience with them have been great. Although, it could improve if they were in the upper area of the laptop.

Among its connectivity we find Bluetooth 4.1 and Wifi 2 × 2 802.11AC. Which is great in supporting both the 2.4 GHZ and 5 GHZ bands dual. It has a 1.3 MP WebCAM camera.

We continue through the lower area and find 5 anti-slip rubbers that prevent any unnecessary movement with our laptop. Its construction, we repeat, is really impressive. We love!

Hardware and internal quality

As for the processor we find an Intel Core M3-6y30, with two cores and 4 threads of execution based on the Skylake architecture at a frequency of 900 MHz and a turbo frequency of 2.2 GHz with a TDP of 7W.

What does this processor equal? According to our tests, it is a low-power Intel i3 processor but with a performance slightly below 15%, all due to its low TDP and base frequency. We remind you that it is used by high-end portable equipment such as the Apple Macbook 12 and the Microsofr Surface 4.

In RAM they have opted for only 4 GB DDR3, an amount that may not be very generous and which at the same time may penalize us. But let's be honest, if it meets all your options, do not worry because the entire system will be outdated before. The big but is that it can not be updated, being soldered on the motherboard.

Regarding storage, Xiaomi has opted for a 128 GB S ATA M2 drive, which on a personal basis is quite insufficient for the main operating system and applications. But it allows us to add a second M.2 PCI disk, which are quite expensive and much faster. So we can play a little storage in that regard.

Regarding graphics, it has the integrated processor: Intel HD Graphics 515 with a base frequency of 300 and which dynamically goes up to 850 MHz. It supports 3840 x 2160p resolution at 60Hz and is compatible with DirectX 12 and OpenGL 4.4. With it, it will allow us to play games in CS: GO in a modest way and even League of Legends.

We would like to make a nuance about your pre-installed Windows 10 is in Chinese. Although we have an official license, it will not serve to load a new Windows 10 in Spanish, so we must buy a key or go pulling in the meantime with the version without activating. This is because Chinese Windows licenses cannot be reused with another operating system, and installing language packs is not a highly recommended option.

Test of performance

As we already anticipated its performance is very similar to that of a low-power i3. With this power it is more than enough to work with any graphic design application at basic levels and any administration resource. Even in games that do not demand much graphics, an acceptable experience will shield us, see: LOL, WoW, CS: GO and etc…

We have been able to verify that the read and write rates of the Crystal Disk Mark of the M2 SSD that it incorporates complies with that established by the manufacturer and see how the SSD M2 SATA disk works.

It is very surprising that the temperatures of the equipment in general with a very cool CPU and that even playing video remains at ideal temperatures. Xiaomi has done very well with the new Xiaomi Air 12. A laptop that offers you optimal autonomy, more than sensible power, something cut in RAM, yes… but enough for basic tasks and on top of that it is very nice to see.

My experience with traveling is very good, since it fits in any suitcase, the charger that I have bought external is great and the only buts we can find are: it only has a normal USB 3.0 connection, Windows 10 operating systems in Chinese the which we lose the license when installing the one of our language and its 4GB of RAM.

So can the keyboard be a problem? I have not had any problem adapting to it, when installing Windows 10 in Spanish almost all the keys I know from memory (I already had a 12-inch HP laptop 8-9 years ago). But if you are lost, I recommend that you install the keyboard language Spanish - American, which is exactly the keyboard you have. In this case, I use Spanish-Spain for daily use and if I have to program or insert a character that I don't know the shortcut, I put the American.
