The popularity of SSDs in M.2 format continues to grow, with this all manufacturers put the batteries year after year to offer us interesting news. This is the case of the Corsair MP510, a new model that is based on a Phison PS5012-E12 controller and NAND TLC memory, characteristics that offer exceptional performance.

Will it measure up to the MP500 and our test bench? Don't miss our comprehensive review!

First of all, we thank Corsair for the trust placed in ceding the product to us for analysis.

Corsair MP510 technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

Corsair MP510 is presented in a small cardboard box, with the brand's usual design in which black and yellow predominate, which are its corporate colors. On the cover we see an image of the M.2 NVMe memory, the speed of reading, writing, IOPS and the maximum storage it allows us. In our case, we have a 960 GB drive.

On the back of the box we can read the most important product specifications in several languages, including Spanish. We continue!

We open the box and find the Corsair MP510 inside a plastic blister to ensure good protection, next to it we find all the documentation attached by the manufacturer. We already focus on the Corsair MP510 SSD and see the typical M.2 2280 form factor, which translates to a width of 22mm and a length of 80mm.

These characteristics make it an extremely compact storage device, in our case and as we have previously mentioned we have the 960 GB drive. Although versions of 240 GB, 480 GB and 1.9 TB are also offered to fit the needs of all users.

Corsair MP510 is manufactured with the best quality black PCB based on components. Corsair already knows what it's like to work with first-class PCBs, as it shows with its RAM memories and the rest of its products. We see that the components are distributed on both sides of the PCB, although the upper one is much more populated, and includes a small and thin aluminum heat sink.

Corsair has been a memory specialist since its inception.

This Corsair MP510 SSD is built using NAND 3D TLC memory chips, a type of memory that allows great performance to be achieved, at lower prices than would be achieved with the use of MLC memory. The counterpart is that TLC memory is less resistant to write cycles, although this is something that can be minimized with good firmware. The previous MP500 brings MLC memories. A little step back, right?

Along with these memories we find a Phison PS5012-E12 controller, compatible with the NVMe 1.3 protocol to achieve the best performance. Multiple functions are integrated into Phison PS5012-E12 to ensure the best stability and reliability.

  • StrongECC rebuilds bad / faulty pages when regular SmartRefresh ECC fails - monitors lock ECC health status and update blocks periodically to improve data retention SmartFlush - minimizes time spent in cache to ensure retention data in case of power loss

Corsair MP510 is a product that aims to achieve the highest possible performance, so it has been chosen to incorporate a PCI Express 3.0 x4 interface, which increases the cost compared to an x2 version of this interface, but allows the device to achieve a theoretical bandwidth of up to 4000 MB / s.

With these features, this 960 GB Corsair MP510 is capable of sequential read and write speeds of 3, 480 MB / s and 3, 000 MB / s, while 4K random performance remains at 610K IOPS in read and 570K IOPS in write.. The SD has support for TRIM, an automatic optimization technology for free memory cells so that performance does not decline with use, something very important.

The resistance of this Corsair MP510 is beyond doubt, as the manufacturer specifies no less than 1, 700 GB of data written before failures in this 960 GB unit. It also assures us a MTBF of 1, 800, 000, two data that will make us have high-end SSD for years.

There is also no lack of SMART technology to monitor the parameters of this SSD, and an advanced garbage collection algorithm, to maintain sustained performance as high as possible. Its maximum power consumption is 6.9W, demonstrating the great energy efficiency of SSDs.

This low consumption will make the Corsair MP510 an ideal SSD for your laptop, since it will decrease battery consumption, and thus improve its autonomy between recharges.

Corsair SSD Toolbox software

As expected, this new SSD MP510 is fully compatible with the Corsair SSD Toolbox utility, which offers the following main functions:

  • Drive Monitoring: Monitors the condition of the drive. Secure Cleaning: For security reasons, completely removes the recoverable data drive. Firmware Update: Installs updated firmware as required or advertised.

Temperatures

Corsair MP510 at maximum performance

Corsair MP510 at rest

We launched a thermal camera (you will get bloated from seeing tests of this type from now on) and we wanted to check the temperatures that the Flir One PRO marks for us both at rest and at maximum performance.

We have also compared the temperatures marked with software vs. camera. We leave you a table to see the temperature differences between both methods, pointing to the SSD controller.

Measurement software: hwinfo64 41 ºC 58 ºC
Hardware measurement: Flir One PRO 41.9 ºC 79.4 ºC

Final words and conclusion about Corsair MP510

The Corsair MP510 NVMe SSD ranks among the best SSDs on the market in M.2 NVME PCI Express x4 format. Its Pishon controller, its different storage sizes (from 240 GB to 1920 GB), its real reading speed of 3480 MB / s, 3000 MB / s writing and 610 / 570K IOPS make it a titan.

We liked its software that allows us to have the SSD monitored and in top shape (although it needs a change of look, because it seems very 2000). Along with its 5-year warranty. Which gives us great peace of mind.

We have also been surprised by its good temperatures. Having 41 ºC at rest and 79.4 ºC at maximum performance. Surely with an M.2 SSD heatsink we dramatically lower the temperatures.

The only thing we did not like is that their memories are TLC . This means that its durability will not be as good as MLC memories. We would like Corsair to incorporate a superior model with high performance and durability memories in future revisions.

At the moment we have seen in German online stores the 480 GB model for 139.90 euros and the 960 GB model for 259 euros. We think they are very good prices and become high performance NVME SSDs at a very affordable price. Great Corsair job!
