Power supplies are, for many, a component with a very 'boring' exterior: a black case and voila. For this reason, Corsair has decided to launch a font with the most attractive aesthetics possible. To do this, they have painted their well-known RMx in white and have included individually sleeved cables. In this Review, we'll take a look at the Corsair RM850x White, beautiful on the outside… And on the inside?

Technical characteristics Corsair RM850X White
External analysis
The front of the box shows us the fountain in its white splendor, following the traditional line of Corsair boxes. The whopping 10-year warranty offered by the brand is of interest, trying to confirm its confidence in the range.
In addition, its 80 Plus Gold certificate of efficiency, the use of 100% Japanese capacitors and the existence of a semi-passive fan mode that promises 'ultra-low noise' are mentioned.
At the rear, more of the same with a little more detail. Remarkable the noise curve of the fan, which indicates that theoretically it will not turn on until it passes 340W with an ambient temperature of 25ºC.
The source comes in excellent protection, and with a presentation that certainly gives a 'premium' feeling, since in addition to the protective foam it comes in a stylish black case, and the cables in a case in this fantastic Corsair RM850x.
The brand provides a user manual, wiring, hardware, some cable ties, a brand sticker and various cable combs along with a small explanatory sheet on how to use them correctly. Before taking a look at the special cables it includes, let's take a look at the exterior of the fountain.
The aesthetics of this Corsair RM850x White 'falls in love' from the first moment. Its white finish really makes it stand out from most models on the market, with a quite attractive chassis.
A sticker on the front warns us that the fan will stay off at low and medium loads, due to its semi-passive mode.
At the rear there is nothing besides the modular connector plate. We are disappointed, as with the other RMx sources, that there is no button to disable the semi-passive mode of the fan. There are users who prefer to have the fan always on, and in fact it is recommended for mounting with the source down, since it is recommended to mount upwards in semi-passive sources since the heat rises naturally, and thus is avoided build up inside the source.
We open the case that comes in the box and find the cables individually sheathed in all their glory. The white paracord mesh is just gorgeous and we loved it from the get-go. This is the most differential aspect of this source, and is that many users want this type of cables in their equipment. Buying a kit costs quite a bit of money, and sheathing the cables manually is a relatively simple but extremely time-consuming and tedious process. These cables are the reason that this source costs much more than the black RMx range.
How about the flexibility of these cables? The truth is that it is lost compared to 'normal' flat cables, but very little. Instead, it wins over traditional meshed cables. The main reason for choosing sleeving is aesthetics, but organizing the wiring usually requires even more care than usual to make them perfect.
The cables are of good length. We have two EPS connectors, something that is almost mandatory for this price, for those who want to mount it on X299 or X399 platforms, for example. Also, the long-awaited 6 PCIe connectors (good figure for 850W), and a whopping 10 SATA. Come on, what is there to give and take. What a luxury Corsair RM850X!
Something that surprised us was the inclusion of capacitors in these cables, which at first seemed somewhat reckless that could ruin the aesthetics, but as we will show you below, they are not seen in a normal assembly.
This is how the cables look once mounted on the equipment, the truth is that they look great even in a black setup like this and that is so 'neglected'. In teams more focused on aesthetics, it will be even better. For example, if we had used the included combs for the PCIe and GPU cable. What do you think of the Corsair RM850X aesthetically?
As we have said, you can not see the capacitors of the cables, but we have seen photos of other assemblies with exposed sources where they can be vaguely appreciated. We don't think it's a drag on aesthetics as a good job has been done to hide them. In any case, they could have been omitted, since their purpose is to improve the quality of the current that leaves the source , but without them it will be excellent.
Internal analisis
The interior of the Corsair RM850x White is made by Taiwanese Channel Well Technology (CWT), just like most Corsair sources. This model is based on a custom internal design for Corsair, identical to the normal RMx, although for the latter, a more compact revision with a different internal design is coming to the market.
As it is already a standard in the sources of this range, the internal technologies used are LLC on the primary side and DC-DC on the secondary, which are quite efficient, and in the case of DC-DC they help to improve voltage regulation.
The primary filter consists of 2 X capacitors, 2 coils and no less than 6 Y capacitors (most manufacturers limit themselves to 4), of which there are 4 on the PCB and 2 at the current input. This part is important for filtering noise from the home electrical network and preventing interference with other appliances.
Additionally, a varistor or MOV reduces surges, and an NTC resistor suppresses the current spikes that occur at the source when turning on the equipment, protecting it.
For this last task, a relay is usually used as well. In this case, Corsair has not included it. We do not know the reason, but it is likely that we seek to avoid the audible 'click' that it makes when it is activated.
In this area, we see a lot of 'queue' that can give an image of 'bad work done'. Nothing is further from reality, since this glue is used to prevent the coils and other components from vibrating, trying to avoid the whine coil.
The materials used for this purpose are conductors of heat, so they will not adversely affect the internal cooling of the source.
The two rectifier diode bridges have a heatsink for cooling, and we were unable to identify which model they belong to.
The two primary capacitors are manufactured by Nichicon, are Japanese and belong to the GG series of good durability. Its capacity is 470µF each, making a total of 970µF, a fairly high amount for a 850W source, great.
Japanese capacitors are also used exclusively on the secondary side. In the area of the 12V MOSFETs (a fairly hot area) are Nippon Chemi-Con electrolytic capacitors of the KZH series, which have an estimated life of the highest for this type of component.
Both in the DC-DC modules, in charge of creating and regulating the 5V and 3.3V rails, as in the rest of the source and on the modular board, several solid capacitors have been used (the metal parts with a red band), much more durable than any electrolytic, and are manufactured by the Japanese Nichicon / FPCAP.
On the modular board, the solder quality is not the best we've seen, but it's more than acceptable.
The supervisory integrated circuit of the protections is a basic Weltrend WT7502, but it only deals with the OVP, UVP and SCP protections, since the rest, OCP, OPP and OTP, are implemented in other ways in the different microcontrollers that the source has..
We finish with the fan, the Corsair 135mm, which uses very decent quality 'Rifle' bearings. It's known as a fairly quiet fan, and given the laid-back profile Corsair uses, it rarely needs to turn on.
Test bench and performance tests
We have carried out tests to regulate the voltages, consumption and speed of the fan. To do this, we have used the following equipment, which charges the source to approximately 75% of its capacity:

The measurement of voltages is real, since it is not extracted from Software but from a UNI-T UT210E multimeter. For consumption we have a Brennenstuhl meter and a laser tachometer for fan speed.

To measure the fan speed, an initial scenario is added that is measured just when the equipment is turned on, while the rest of the scenarios are measured after 30min of use (2h in the case of Scenario 1)

Corsair's semi-passive mode is extremely relaxed and works well, although we would have liked to have been given the ability to disable it.
- Corsair has one of the most relaxed semi-passive modes on the market. In our case, the fan didn't turn on until an hour had passed since we started our last stress test. It should be noted that being an 850W source, we are subjecting it to a relatively low load, around 40%. However, the behavior is similar to that observed with an RM550x. The good thing about this semi-passive profile is that a digital microcontroller is used to regulate it. In other words, they use a fairly effective algorithm that takes into account internal temperature, load and time of use. Another positive aspect is that once the fan is turned on, it will take several minutes to turn off, instead of doing it as soon as the charging, as we did with another power supply. Thus, if we are in highly variable load scenarios, such as a game and its consumption peaks and lows, the fan will stay on all the time instead of continuously turning on and off, something harmful to its useful life. In summary, we like to see semi-passive modes that are well designed, but given its aggressiveness we believe that it should have been possible to disable it.
Final words and conclusion about Corsair RMx White
This range is basically a normal RMx with a coat of paint and exceptional wiring with 'sleeving'. What does this mean? Well, we get great internal quality, respectable efficiency and excellent performance, as has been confirmed for so long in the market.
On the outside, you will fall in love with the look and the individually meshed wiring in white will be a luxury in most set-ups. Inside, the quality is superb with a modern internal design backed by good components and no less than a 10-year warranty.
This model is for sale for around 170 euros, being the RM750x White much more attractive for less than 140 euros. Should a high or low price be considered? We are talking about 25-30 euros above the normal RMx, and considering that a Corsair cable kit with sleeving costs around 80 euros, this is a good price. However, if we omit the added value of aesthetics, the price could be considered high since the brand itself offers better ranges at this price such as the RMi, HX or HXi.
