Doogee always tries to follow trends. Instead, with the Doogee BL12000 Pro they have gone further. They have taken the risk of creating the smartphone with the largest battery on the market. This has allowed them to introduce some hardware improvements at the cost of sacrificing ergonomics and design.

Let's take a closer look!

First of all, we are grateful to Doogee for the trust placed in ceding the product to us for analysis.

Technical characteristics Doogee BL12000 Pro

Unboxing

Inside the minimalist black box that Doogee has accustomed us to, we can find:

  • Doogee BL12000 Pro. Transparent gel protective case. MicroUSB charging cable. Power adapter. OTG adapter cable. SIM tray extractor. Manual and warranty.

An ergonomic design

There are smartphones that stand out for being thin, for being light or for a different or beautiful design. With this Doogee you can already forget all that. It is big. Its exact measurements are 74.7 x 162 x 14 mm. It is quite heavy. Specifically, 300 grams. And its design, removing the previous flaws, has a very classic style.

However, they did not want to strip it of some elegance. In addition to the typical 2.5D front glass, the back is also made of glass, as is usual in previous terminals of the brand. The design is finished off by rounded lateral edges made of metal and plastic, with screws to hold the robust rear casing.

It cannot be said that the BL12000 Pro does not sit well in the hand or does not have a good grip. They have tried to mask as far as possible the blots of their size and weight. Anyone accustomed to a terminal of the last years, instantly notices its extremely high weight and thickness. Then come teasing and comparisons to gym supplies. The truth is that you end up getting used to it. The real downside is one-handed use of the screen. If in itself it costs in thin terminals, in this, the thickness is one more obstacle. It is very difficult to use without both hands.

Detail design

Finally, let's focus on the details of your design. In the upper front we can find the speaker for calls and the double camera for selfies. The bottom is free of any buttons or sensors. Those two frames are about a centimeter wide. At the rear are the main double camera, the LED flash and just below this set, the fingerprint sensor.

The edges do not offer much novelty. At the top is exclusively the 3.5mm Jack. On the left, only the slot for two nanoSIM or nanoSIM and microSD.

The right edge houses the typical volume and just below the on / off button. Although this last button has a rough surface to better recognize it, its position just below that of the volume button is not very appropriate. It's easy to go wrong and press it by mistake. Even more so if you use the cover that comes standard. In that case, wanting to press one button or another becomes a nuisance.

Finally, at the bottom edge we find the microUSB type B port for charging, the microphone for calls and the speaker for multimedia sound.

It is appreciated that these companies already include the plastic protectors both in front and behind. That avoids having to buy them and the hassle of placing them.

A screen to match

If the device is large, the screen could not be less. We are talking about a 6-inch diagonal with an 18: 9 aspect ratio. These dimensions are accompanied by a Full HD + resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels and IPS LCD technology. This gives us a density of 403 pixels per inch. The image quality despite using Miravision technology is good but not excellent. This is determined by several factors. Colors are displayed correctly, without becoming oversaturated. At night, it is possible to use the night mode that turns colors to a warmer and less annoying tone. This mode can be activated on the background application selection screen.

If you want to change the tone for night mode or use one for day mode. It is possible to do it from an option in display settings.

The contrast of 1100: 1 on the other hand, fulfills what was expected, although it does not achieve intense blacks.

These color and contrast settings are the default by the system as standard. Again, it is possible to modify these parameters to taste by means of another option in settings

The viewing angles are good, although where this terminal stands out is in the brightness. Outdoors in sunshine, the Doogee has enough nits to see the screen correctly. At night, even the minimum brightness is powerful. So it is good to activate the night mode that I mentioned earlier.

A chord sound

The multimedia speaker located on the bottom edge does a satisfactory job. It is a section that every day more Chinese brands take care of. It sounds powerful enough to be heard in most situations. There is a section in the settings to enhance this volume.

The reproduction quality is equally good. There is not much noise or "canned effect".

An operating system waiting for Oreo

Although this terminal is expected to be updated to Android Oreo, the reality is that today it remains in Android Nougat 7.1.1. The customization layer is Doogee OS 2.0. The same one that the company has been using since mid-2017. This layer is characterized by being really similar to pure Android, mainly changing the design of the icons and adding some essential applications. No pointless or junk apps. In this regard, you can see that the batteries have been put in since they launched the Doogee Mix.

Additional built-in settings include changing the position and number of digital buttons to move around the interface, a setting for taking photos or videos by pressing the volume buttons with the screen off, gesture settings to control the system, or a programmer to turn the device on and off.

It must be recognized that the system runs smoothly and robustly. In this they have to see the 6GB of RAM that the terminal has.

Furthermore, it is possible to get the Doogee BL12000 Pro with either 64 Gb or 128 GB of internal storage.

Good performance for the mid-range

On this occasion, Doogee has mounted the Helio P23 SoC with an Octa-Core CPU and 64-bit architecture. Four of its cores are at 2.5 GHZ and the remaining four at 1.6 GHz. This is complemented by the ARM Mali-G71 MP2 GPU. This SoC is the evolution of the previous P20 used in other previous Doogee models. They provide a considerable improvement in terms of the possibility of using better hardware and having less energy consumption.

In this case this renewed Soc shows. AnTuTu, for example, gives a score of 86225 and games perform at a good level. No apparent frame drop. So, despite not being a high-end it behaves quite well in all multimedia aspects. That performance is greatly favored by the GPU which has a speed of up to 770 Ghz, It also helps, as I mentioned before, the inclusion of the recent LPDDR4x memory with 6 GB of RAM.

One aspect heavily advertised by Doogee is 360-degree fingerprint recognition. And it is true that it works by placing the finger in any position. However, the downside of this sensor remains the same on all of the company's models. The sensor only really works, if the terminal was used a few minutes ago. If your last use was longer, you will need to press the power button first. Once it works, your response time is correct. Not taking long to unlock the device.

Many cameras, but little chicha

At the rear we find the main dual camera consisting of one side an OmniVision OV16880 lens with a PureCel sensor, 1.8 and 16 megapixel focal aperture; and on the other hand for a 13 megapixel GalaxyCore GC0310 lens. Features include autofocus, digital zoom, HDR mode, face detection, self-timer, ISO sensitivity settings, and exposure compensation.

Entering the core of the quality of the snapshots, in illuminated exteriors it can be seen that the camera really captures details well and displays faithful colors. The contrast is not the best, it is displayed correctly. Autofocus, on the other hand, is good and fast. I think I can say that it is one of the best cameras among the previous models of the brand. Although of course, that is not very difficult, seeing the previous cameras mounted by the company.

In dark scenes, the camera continues to behave well and offers correct details and colors where it fits. Focusing on these scenes is slower and therefore photographs are more likely to be blurred. The same is true for indoor scenes where many details are lost.

Little-worked photography software

The main dual camera has several photography modes. Namely: panorama, video, photo, beauty, bokeh, Mono, Night, Pro. Almost all are well known. The dual camera is usually used for the Bokeh or blur effect but as it happens in the rest of the company's models, that effect is still poorly implemented and not working.

Video recording does not offer the maximum expected resolution at 4K, so you have to settle for Full HD. The quality is decent and there is no image stabilizer. Nor is it easy to recognize what quality we are recording if they only indicate video quality: low, medium, high, good.

The selfie camera has an OmnivisionOV16880 camera, with 1.8 focal length, 16 megapixels and a lens with 88 degrees of angle. The second 8-megapixel camera is the Omnivision OV8856 model with 2.4 focal aperture, PureCel-type sensor, and a 130-degree angular lens. Both cameras take just good pictures. The use of the dual camera is mainly intended to exchange between one and the other depending on the number of people. Obviously, the wider-angle camera will get more out of it with more people.

A Duracell-worthy battery

This is the star section of the Doogee BL12000 Pro. There is nothing like the 12000 mAh battery capacity that this terminal has. Sometimes the Chinese market exaggerates the characteristics. We tested this battery and with normal and moderate use we managed to last 6 and a half days. An impressive amount and close to the week. Screen usage was around 17 hours and up.

Another highlight of the battery is its fast 12V-3A charge. He managed to charge half the battery in 1 hour and 50 minutes. For the full charge it took 4 hours and 15 minutes.

Connections and powerbank in the same package

The Bluetooth version remains this time in version 4.0. And the usual ones: GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, Wi-FI 802.11a / b / g / n, Wi-Fi Direct and FM Radio. On the other hand, the BL12000 Pro allows you to use any external device thanks to the OTG function and the cable included in the box. But the thing is not there, the Doogee allows you to charge any other device connected to its microUSB port.

Final words and conclusion about the Doogee BL12000 Pro

This smartphone is not for anyone. Today many are not only looking for power but also style and design. Nor do many want to have a large or heavy terminal in their pocket or that it is difficult to operate with one hand. These may be the main drawbacks that many will see. But no doubt there are those who will appreciate its enormous battery life for one reason or another.

In addition, you must assess and take into account its Full HD + screen, its large internal storage or the improvement in its cameras. Performance is a section that falls somewhere in between. Today you cannot have everything, so it is up to each of you to choose what suits you best. It is possible to find this terminal on the market around € 220.
