Extratorrent announces its closure

The second most popular torrent portal in the world, ExtraTorrent, has announced its final closure. Although at first it seemed like a temporary problem, website administrators posted a short message on the site's home page to announce that the portal will no longer work.

“ExtraTorrent, including all of its servers, will stop working. We are deleting all data permanently. Please stay away from other fake clones and sites claiming to be ExtraTorrent, ”they indicate in the message.

This decision took everyone by surprise, especially since this was one of the most popular portals in the world for searching and downloading torrents.

TorrentFreak contacted the website administrator, called SaM, who confirmed that his activity had unfortunately ended. "The time has come to say goodbye, " said the representative of the portal, without going into details about the reasons for the closure of the website or about what could have led them to make this decision.

More than a decade sharing torrents

ExtraTorrent was founded in November 2006, making it one of the oldest BitTorrent portals. In those days, there were other larger sites, such as Mininova, although after the closure of Mininova it was when ExtraTorrent began to receive more traffic, to the point of having more users than all its predecessors, at least in terms of daily visitors.

The only portal that surpassed ExtraTorrent in visitors was The Pirate Bay, a portal that continues to operate and seems to be the only giant that still stands as far as the world of BitTorrent is concerned.

Along with ExtraTorrent, the portal's main group, ETRG, has also stopped working. At the same time, according to the website administrator, the ETTV and ETHD groups could continue their operations if they receive enough donations to cover their expenses.
