Microsoft announces the closure of its Groove Music streaming platform

To make things easier for users, Microsoft decided to team up with Spotify to allow users to import their current Groove playlists to the well-known music streaming platform. Obviously, those who do not want to join Spotify at the recommendation of Microsoft will simply receive their money back.

In a published note about these changes, the company said the following:

We will soon update the Groove Music application with the possibility of transferring music to Spotify, a function that will be available for Windows Insider from this week. The update to the Groove Music app for Windows 10 and Xbox One will begin the week of October 9 and will allow Groove Music Pass owners to move their current music collections and playlists to Spotify. Groove Music Pass content will begin moving to Spotify until at least January 31, 2018.

The company also wrote a frequently asked questions article about this decision with more information about it.

Spotify currently has a presence in more than 60 countries and boasts about 140 million active users, of which about 60 million are paid subscribers. Meanwhile, Groove not only had considerably fewer users, but even poorer functionality. The Spotify app also recently debuted on the Microsoft Store for Windows 10 and Xbox.

Finally, although the Groove application for Windows 10 (PC and Mobile) will continue to work after December 31, users will only be able to use it to play locally stored music and to stream from OneDrive, where anyone can store their music to have it on all your devices.
