A passive heatsink had previously been released for the M.2 version of the Intel Optane 905P NVMe drive. The passive heatsink ensures lower operating temperatures, which prolongs the life and improves the sustained performance of the unit.

Intel Optane 905P now with a default heatsink

The Intel Optane 905P unit uses around 9.35 W of power under load, which is a challenge for dissipation without a dedicated cooling solution like the Intel Optane Heatsink heatsink, which will now come by default with the purchase of this unit M.2.

The thermal performance of this solution is achieved by thermal pads that transfer heat to the finned aluminum heatsink for a greater dissipation area. The heatsink design ensures it is easy to install, low profile, easily reusable, and aesthetically non-intrusive, something I personally agree with.

The Intel Optane heatsink is compatible with 22110 M.2 Optane SSDs (22mm wide and 110mm long). The Intel Optane Heatsink heatsink was available for purchase through the EK Online Store and partner dealer network at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of € 19.90 including VAT. However, Intel decided to include its own refrigerator in M.2 models.

The refrigerator consists of a metal plate that is installed on both sides of the SSD. All new copies of the Intel Optane 905 M.2 SSD are now equipped with this cooler at no additional cost. Current owners can also order a free SSD cooler from the Intel website.

The 380GB Intel Optane 905p drive sells for around € 530.
