The Last Guardian is the game that has been most expected from the PlayStation catalog, the game was announced in 2007 for the PS3 but it was finally in 2016 when it saw the light and it did on PS4, a whole generation we have had to wait to enjoy it. Would it have been worth it?

The Last Guardian to review under PS4 and PS4 Pro

The guys at Digital Foundry have laid hands on The Last Guardian to see how it behaves on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro. In the first it runs at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels while in the second it runs at 3360 x 1890 pixels, a rescaled 4K resolution. The Last Guardian is compatible with HDR technology so we can take advantage of it as long as we have a clear compatible monitor.

We now go to evaluate the performance of The Last Guardian and take the first jug of cold water to check how the PS4 sweats to maintain a framerate between 20 and 30 FPS, with frametimes that reach 110 ms. On the other hand, PS4 Pro users see how the game works at 4K resolution at a speed between 25 and 30 FPS and a stable 30 FPS in case we cap it at 1080p.

A very poor performance, it is especially striking that the PS4 Pro is not capable of reaching 60 FPS when the game is limited to 1080p. The optimization work doesn't seem to have been particularly good. As for the graphic quality, there are hardly any differences beyond the rendering resolution and the framerate. With this it seems quite clear that the best way to enjoy the game is with the PS4 Pro and limiting the resolution to 1920 x1080 pixels.

Finally we see a gameplay of 5 minutes long at 4K resolution.
