With the first movie releases in 4K UltraHD Blu-ray format, dual-layer Blu-Ray discs that increase storage capacity to 66GB had been standardized. Still, this amount of space per unit could be a bit tight for 4K content, forcing producers to somewhat limit image bitrate and content.

Batman vs Superman will come with the first 100GB Blu-Ray disc

Fortunately the limitations of Blu Ray discs for 4K content are going to become a thing of the past when the first three-layer Blu Ray discs are released, increasing the amount of storage to 100GB of space.

The first movie to break the limitations and be released with a 100GB Blu Ray disc will be Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. The need for a disc of this capacity is due to the duration of the film in its extended edition, about 3 and a half hours of footage plus the extra content. As you might imagine, Warner Bros. didn't want to split the movie into two Blu-Ray discs (it would be a lousy solution) so it was the perfect occasion for three-layer Blu-ray drives to kick in.

Recall that the extended edition of Batman vs Superman adds 30 minutes of additional scenes and an "R" rating, so it will come uncensored compared to the version that premiered in theaters.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in 4K UltraHD, Blu ray and its corresponding DVD version will be available on June 19 first in North America.
